Where’s The Beef?

Date: Friday January 4, 2008

If you have any recollection of the commercial from whence the quote in the title came from, than you are as old and crusty as I am.

At least I am in good company.

My beautiful friend Kristin has posted recently about going meatless…both on her personal blog and on ParentDish. Amy from Assertagirl has also talked about the giving up of the meatiness.

This has intrigued me.

It is not so much due to any ethical/environmental concerns. We get our beef from a local rancher. Not only are the cows treated well, the meat itself tastes better. Ish.

As for chicken? I buy it from the meat store (or Costco). Nothing that makes me weep on behalf of the poor, stinky chickens.

For I know how stinky they are. Because we have chickens. In a chicken coop. On our property.

Yes. Yes, we do.

We do not eat these chickens, but we do use their eggs. Mostly for baking. I am not a fan of the eating of the eggs.

The reason that I have been intrigued by the thought of going meatless has to do with the fact that meat does not do much for me.

Don’t get me wrong. Sometimes bacon is all that is needed to fill an empty void. A juicy barbecued burger in the summer (Homemade, not frozen) is absolutely phenomenal.

Often, however, I am completely turned off by the flesh of the animals. If I bite down and encounter a teeny bit of gristle? I am ALL DONE with the meaty portion of my meal.

Raw meat also GROSSES ME OUT. Have any of you seen the Lysol commercial where she rubs raw chicken ALL OVER HER KITCHEN?

That visual will haunt me until the day that I die. Seriously.

I talked to Honey about going meatless (sometimes) and he is fully on board. The kids are not huge meat lovers, mostly due to the texture (Me too!). While I do not see us becoming completely vegetarian (We love seafood!), I think we may be scaling back on the beef and the chicken. We already do not eat much pork, thanks to the fact I hate pork chops…and the aversion I have to ribs thanks to the flu I had for my birthday last year.

So. I am going to try more meatless dishes…once I find them.

I would love to hear your thoughts (and recipes!) regarding the whole Meatless Movement. Dish (hee!) it.

(Unrelated side note: Honey and I are going on a date this afternoon/evening. Wheee! Yay for family!)

(Second unrelated side note: I registered yesterday for BlogHer ‘08. Squeee! Are you going to be there?)

Way to go on the meatless thing! My sister-in-law is a vegetarian and has a sweet cook book. I’ll ask her for the title!

No, I’m not going to BlogHer ‘08. I wish!

Have fun on your date!!

I highly recommend going veggie. I was a vegetarian for 12 years. I chose to do that because I found it very difficult to digest meat, so I’d often get sick because it would just sit in my stomach and not move. I’ll spare you any more disgusting details, but suffice it to say I quit eating red meat and chicken for 12 years, and I was extremely healthy all that time.

I started eating meat again a few years ago because I went on a missions trip, and didn’t know what kind of food we’d be served. I didn’t want to be rude to our hosts, so I began eating it again just in case, and sure enough we were served meat regularly.

Now I just eat chicken and seafood and bacon on occasion. I don’t think I could ever give up bacon entirely. SO good! I’ll eat the occasional burger as well, but red meat is still too heavy for me to handle very much of.

I’ll dig thru my recepies and see if I can find you some good recepies for meatless stuff. There’s gotta be something tasty in my stash.

Have fun on your date tonight!

Happy date eve!

I’m kinda meatless except I don’t think I could ever give up bacon. My bad.

how are your kids with eggplant? I have a killer recipe for Mushroom Moussakka.

I have wrestled with the thought of going meatless too but damn I love me some meat. We have cut back, way back though so it’s a start.

I have some amazing veggie chili and enchalada recipes - from Looney Spoons if you have it. If not, let me know, I’ll send them to you.

:-)

Ohhh! Date night. I think Mark and I going on one tomorrow.:)

I have been a vegetarian for about 17 years now, longer if you count how long its been since I’ve eaten eggs. This makes cooking in our house rather funny, because Mark doesn’t like veggies. He doesn’t eat much red meat though.

Nate isn’t being raised a vegetarian, but we don’t give him red meat.

I’m not a vegetarian for ethical reasons either. It’s just a choice for both health and personal reasons. It’s been a bit of a rocky road learning how to eat right, and I can’t say much for what I ate when I moved away to go to college, but I think I eat pretty healthy now. Vanilla soy milk is a dream, by the way, in cereal. mmm.

If you have any questions, I’m all ears Angella.

Comment by Karla on January 4th, 2008 @ 10:28 am

I’m not a vegetarian, but I am happy without meat. My high-school boyfriend and freshman-year roommate were both semi-vegetarians, and when Troy and I were first married and I was learning to cook, our closest friends were vegetarians. None of them ever tried to convince us meat was evil, but just being around them and trying lots of vegetarian dishes had a big influence on us. Probably about half of the meals I cook are meatless just because I like the food.

Maybe I’ll email you some recipes later. :-)

I’m still getting over handling the raw turkey at Thanksgiving.

I’m probably going to BlogHer, but I have to make sure I’m still blogging at that point :D

Comment by LVGurl on January 4th, 2008 @ 11:37 am

We’re in the same boat. I could give up meat in a heartbeat. I made the Cauliflower and Lentil Curry dish from the Martha Stewart magazine and it was delish. Even Steve liked it. I was planning on posting it on my blog when I find the time. If you want it sooner, I can make a copy of it for you.

Comment by Amanda Brown on January 4th, 2008 @ 11:39 am

I too am old and crusty. Also: Pork! It’s what’s for dinner!

I’ve thought casually about going vegetarian. I tend to feel better when I don’t eat meat for awhile (usually through sheer accident), but the thought of giving up bacon brings tears to my eyes.

Comment by Moose in the Kitchen on January 4th, 2008 @ 11:52 am

I’m like you, I could go without. I’ve done it before when I do my raw food cleanses. I feel amazing everytime I do it. But, there are vitamins in red meat especially that can only be found in red meat. So, if you do it somewhat long term make sure you supplement. I think it’s B12. I think.
Let me know how it works out.
My husband would NEVER let me cut out his meat. He’s a carniverous brand of human.
See you on monday. Do the boys have school on monday? I can’t seem to remember. Something tells me yes. Is my brain right?
Miss your smiling face.
Play date next week?
Or is Graham’s bday party this week. I really should be emailing you instead of dragging this comment out forever and ever.
Okay bye!

I come from a big meat eating family, but I have never really taken to beef. I never opt for steak and if I can substitute my hamburger patty for turkey I do. I love fish and I like poultry. Pork is good sometimes. But, honestly if you can handle going meatless you will probably be much healthier. Enjoy your date and BlogHer ‘08!

Thanks for the linky love, Angella. I’d also like to direct readers back to BlogHers ACT Canada, because that’s where my original post on the matter sits. Our January challenge is to eat meatless once a week, and some readers are posting recipes there, too.

I haven’t registered for the conference yet, but I’m planning on going. Can’t wait!

Comment by Assertagirl on January 4th, 2008 @ 12:24 pm

We are practically vegetarian at home. I keep a kosher kitchen and the price of kosher meat is insane. Thanks to sticker shock we hardly ever have meat. From time to time I will buy chicken and ground turkey. We do fish and lots of Morning Star “chicken/beef” strips and their “ground burger” crumbles. For the longest time my 4 year old had never had a real hot dog, he only knew veggie dogs (not the tofu ones). Sad isn’t it?

Let me know if you are interested in some good cook books. We have lots of vegetarian ones for Slow Cookers and beyond. I just took a bunch more out of the library to see if I like them enough to get for our collection.

Good luck with whatever you decide, but I agree. . . summer hamburgers are still a must in my world!

Comment by TheAngelForever on January 4th, 2008 @ 12:34 pm

I can’t see us going off meat completely, Ian would NEVER go for that. I do like meat, just not in large amounts. I do hear you on the whole biting into a teeny bit of gristle, GAG ME!

I have no recipes to share, sorry, but have a fun time with you honey. :)

Comment by Kristin on January 4th, 2008 @ 12:59 pm

I was never much of a meat eater as a kid and I would just push it around my plate until my mom took it away. When I was first switching over I cut out red meat and for about a year I just ate chicken and fish, then I cut out the chicken and white meat. About once a month I will eat fish now. I never get sick anymore and I have so much more energy. My favourite veggie meat replacement products are from St. Yves which I can find at most grocery stores but there are some other brands if you can get to a Whole Foods. I get recipes from all over the place; vegetarian times magazine, Women’s Health magazine and online from the food network.

Comment by Teej on January 4th, 2008 @ 1:15 pm

I could easily go without beef or pork. But boneless, skinless chicken breasts and seafood (prawns! tilapia! scallops!) make up a big part of our menu. And yes, a fresh grilled cheeseburger would be hard to remove from my life. I’m similar to you in that if I encounter a single bone in anything, I’m done with that dish.

I think I have a couple vegetarian recipes on my recipe blog if you want to check them out. I’ll keep my eye peeled for any other gooders. We’ve been wanting to add a few vegetarian meals a week to our menu too. Good luck with your decision!

Have a great date!

I could live without everything except the bacon too. I enjoy wild meat, they eat better stuff. Naturally organic. Try out the Moosewood Restaurant Cookbook. My fave is the Carrot-Mushroom Loaf. Wicked good. You can find a lot of these recipes online. That chicken rubbing commercial got me too. We also raised our own chickens when I was a kid, and the eggs, they do not emerge clean. Where’s the beef? Older, and far crustier than you, sweet thang.

Comment by witchypoo on January 4th, 2008 @ 1:47 pm

I mainly eat chicken, very little beef (But I love a good steak) and adore sushi.

I don’t think I could go meatless, but I am totally for people who do (As long as they don’t bitch at me for eating meat.)

AND…You KNOW I’m going to BlogHer because we’ve been “Squeeing” at each other by email for the last two days!!!! HEE!!!

Yay! I’m the same way - I would never want to give up meat entirely, but I generally don’t eat it. Usually once a week or so I’ll have some beef or chicken (I don’t count fish as meat) but that’s about it. I’ve heard it called “flexitarianism” but I think that’s a silly word so I rarely use it. ;) Good luck, and have a fun date night! =)

Comment by ashpags on January 4th, 2008 @ 2:04 pm

I do like meat. So does my husband. And so do my boys. But we try to have a meatless meal once a week. It doesn’t always happen, but we try.
Good luck to you!

Comment by Hannah on January 4th, 2008 @ 3:19 pm

You know now that I think of it there is a lot of meat that I don”t like because of texture. If I take one bite and it “feels” gross I’M DONE. But we are huge seafood FREAKS. I can’t see James going veggie cuz he is a definate meat and potato man. I have a good veggie lasagna that I made for mom and don and it even fooled him, he had no idea there was no meat. I’ll dig it up for you….and no, no BLOGHER ‘08. HAHA, I guess you should probably blog more than once a month for that hey ? LOL

Comment by Mel on January 4th, 2008 @ 3:20 pm

We don’t eat meat every night and have a lot on vegetarian meals. I was a vegetarian for a large part of my life and now I enjoy a good steak.

Comment by jazz on January 4th, 2008 @ 5:54 pm

I’ve been a pescetarian for something like 14 years. It started because the meat they served us in college was scary, and a bunch of my friends were vegetarian/pescetarian. It stuck.

It’s wonderful how mainstream a lot of the fake-meat products have become. Morningstar Farms makes bacon, but it’s a poor substitute for the real thing. However, I love my Thanksgiving Tofurky!

Bacon Salt is vegetarian. Mmm … I had some bacon cheese fries earlier this week …

Comment by merrymishaps on January 4th, 2008 @ 6:15 pm

I must be crusty and old…

I am so with you on the raw meat thing. I’ve been getting better about handling it since being married, but it still bugs me. When I lived on my own I would go weeks without eating any meat. Again, it wasn’t an ethical issue, just more I didn’t want to deal with the hassles of raw meat and I was perfectly content with other food items.

I am all registered for BlogHer too!

I forgot to mention…I think I WANT to be at Blogher this year, but I have no idea where we will be living in July. Could be Maryland still, could be Pennsylvania, could be Italy, could be Egypt. Or it could be someplace totally off our radar. Gotta love the Navy.

Comment by bethany actually on January 4th, 2008 @ 10:34 pm

Well, I too am with you on the meat thing…I could definately do without! I’ve never really liked the taste of most meat but now, any thought of the animal I’m eating causes me to well, you know…I just stop eating it. Hope you had a great evening!

Comment by Michele on January 4th, 2008 @ 11:44 pm

Hi Angella,

I actually ran across a website awhile ago that had a great collection of meatless recipes. They run toward the Weight Watchers style of recipes (I think they may even include the WW Points values. I was a vegetarian for 2 years and completely vegan for a year before I came back to love the meat. I still can’t stand the smell of chicken when you start cooking it but I’m definitely back on the meat.

Make sure, if you decide to do this, that you find a way to get enough protein or you may find your family getting sluggish and tired.

i love meat. it’s my most favorite part of the meal. we go meatless twice a week though… because i like to make things with beans or nuts or eggs…

Comment by Jennifer on January 5th, 2008 @ 9:38 am

I recently became interested in the vegan diet, mainly for health reasons. Animal products are the only food that contain cholesterol, a leading cause of heart disease. Meat is high in fat and contains no fiber. Animal protein is a large (the largest) contributor to heart disease, which has become an epidemic in our society.

Traditionally meat made up only a small component of the human diet, approximately 20-30%. In todays affluent society it is often one of the main componenets. There is plenty of ways to substitute protein into our diets, such as eating nuts and legumes. However, meat products contain an essential nutrient, vitamin b12. If you become vegan or vegetarian it is important to substitute it into your diet. One method is to drink two cups of rice milk per day. There is also vanilla flavored rice milk if you don’t like the regular stuff.

Good luck! For more information check out the coronary health improvement project (CHIP) @ http://www.chipusa.org/#

yes, I know the commercial. sad, but true. yes…raw meat is raunchy. But…I love me a steak (right off the BBQ) with a baked potato. I actually crave red meat during ’special’ times of the month. I also love chicken (especially from Swiss Chalet - with the dipping sauce…). Pork…I could give or take. This family is a family of carnivores…no doubt about it.

Comment by Vicki on January 5th, 2008 @ 7:56 pm

I love meat. LOVE it. There are meals that are sometimes just meat. Bad I know, we do eat a lot of veggies though too. My boys also love meat, although they pretty much eat anything on a rotating schedule of likes and dislikes. We also LOVE seafood. Going meatless in this house would not fly. My sister on the other hand regularly goes meatless. Whatever works for you.
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. ;)

Comment by Heidi on January 5th, 2008 @ 10:08 pm

I could not give up my barbequed meat. I do not know how vegetarians plan meals since I always pick my meat and then my veggies, and I do like veggies (especially done on the BBQ!) I have been a little afraid of “American meat” lately though, since most of the animals are shot up with hormones so they get bigger. Today I bought my first package of organic hamburger. Ouch! We have good friends that are vegetarians and we love going out to eat with them because they teach us how to pick food off the menu and mix and match appies and sides to make a great meal. We did once go to a fancy veg restaurant (Carmelita’s) but left poor and hungry!!

I don’t know that we could ever truly be meatless in this house. I do make a few really good meatless dishes. I’ll look them up and send them on over your way.

As for BlogHer…I fully intend on going. Even though I totally suck at blogging.

Comment by Kristie on January 6th, 2008 @ 6:48 pm

I’m what you would call a Flexitarian — I’m not a vegetarian but I rarely eat meat (usually when I am at someone’s house.) I don’t think I could ever be a full-fledged veggie, though I could live without it for the most part.

I’m on the fence about BlogHer. I want to go though!
