This is my version of the Weekend Update. It contains no humor, no cast members of SNL, no television. So. Basically this post has nothing in common with the original Weekend Update.
Awesome.
First, we have this dude. Graham.

His is five, almost six. (Really? SIX?) He is in the first grade. He is also BLOWING MY MIND.
This baby of mine, now in full-time school, is actually learning things. Go figure. The other day he picked up Nathan’s preschool newsletter and READ IT TO ME. He had a day off on Friday thanks to a Pro-D day and has filled me in on all sorts of math equations.
“Two threes plus one equals SEVEN!”
Yes. Yes, it does.
He then recited a plethora of math equations. (Two tens equal twenty! Two fours plus one equals NINE!) It made his accountant Momma proud.
And yet he still spreads his cheeks and ask me if his bum is clean. It really is time to cut the apron/tissue strings.
Next we have Nathan, he of the infamous family portrait.

Before that portrait, I had no idea that the dude could even draw.
Last night, he sat down and wrote out “Mom” and “Dad”.
WTH?
Then we have Miss Emily.

(This was her first attempt at a “surprised face”. Cut her some slack. She is two.)
I try hard not to compare her to her brothers but she is so much smarter seems to be speaking more that her brothers did at this age.
We were rushing out the door to pick Graham up from school. I told her and Nathan that we needed to hurry or we would be late. I said, “If we are not there, then Graham will wonder where we are“.
She pipes up, “We’re in Summerland!”
*blink, blink*
Somebody is paying attention.
Last night she was “helping” me make dinner. I told her that she was my best girl. She piped up, “You’re da best Mommy!”
All together now. AWWWWWWWWW.
She and I have conversations. Her vocabulary blows our minds on a daily basis. Matthew and I are constantly looking at each other and saying, “Did you hear what she just said?”
After two “late speakers”, we are flabbergasted. What a great word. Ranks up there with plethora.
Life, in general, has been opening up a can of whoop-arse on me this week. The kids, thankfully, have not. Funny how it all seems to balance out.
Their little accomplishments have helped to mediate the crazy, most of which is beyond my control and not worth stressing about.
(Like the fact that there was a rock slide on the highway while Matthew is at a concert on the other side. As I am writing this he and his friends are planning to take a well-traveled logging road home. THEY WILL BE FINE.)
(Updated: They ARE fine. Phew.)
So. Tell me. What has brightened up your week/weekend? I would love to hear it.

That rockslide came too close behind the black ice incident. Whoop-ass indeed! Does chocolate help?

Always.

I can totally relate to all three of those things! And is there anything better than those first few talks with a newbie? It’s like you’re talking together for a minute and you’re like “WTF? Are you carrying on a conversation with me?”

That is EXACTLY what is going on. You would think the third time around it would not be so surprising. But I’m amazed all over again

This brightened my morning:
I walked out into the living room to be greeted by Annalie grinning and saying, “Welcome to our restaurant, customer!” Then she hugged me and formally asked me, “What would you like for breakfast?” I said it was a friendly kind of restaurant that hugged its customers, and she said, “And I’ll kiss you when you leave!” Then she brought me pancakes and sausage that she and Grandma Carol had made.

we got stuck on the other side of the rockslide last night, too. Because we took our 2 oldest girls to HSM 3. We left baby home. So we HAD to get home to her. We took the connector to Aspen Grove to Princeton and back up. Nothing like a 3 hour drive home from a movie… I can’t confirm a rockslide as of yet, just a fracture in the mountain. It looks like the road could be closed for a while. It’ll be interesting to see if Dono akes it to work Monday! Hope Matthew made it home at a decent hour:)

He got home at midnight. It sucks that it took you guys three hours!
There is a MUCH faster way if Donovan needs to get to Kelowna. The guys turned off at Peachland and took a service road that comes out by our house – it only took an hour. Give us a call if he wants directions

Glad to hear they made it home safely.
What has brightened my week is the fact that I got a brand new computer at work yesterday. Totally awesome!! All of the programs are the most current and the machine is brand new and shiny, and it works millions of times faster than my old one did. I had a lot of fun testing it out yesterday.
Also, I’m going to the Canucks practice tomorrow morning, which should be great fun!

Rock/mud slides SUCK.
I went to an AMAZING women’s brunch at my church this morning and learned self defense from a church elder who is also a cop. He came in full uniform. I think having a cop husband would be ULTRA SEXY. Seriously. Oh. My. Word.
Um, onwards. I have to bring Kaylie to a birthday party today AND ANOTHER ONE tomorrow. I HATE birthday parties. (The presents, mostly. and the dropping off and picking up …) But, this one is for a girl that we had over for a playdate yesterday and when her dad picked her up we learned that he went to Briercrest with my father-in-law. I found it hilarious that my father-in-law has a 7-year-old granddaughter, and his same-age friend has a 7-year-old daughter. Weird.

Dinner and drinks with some lovely ladies last night (Rhi & Carrisa + Mandajuice and more!) and then one of my favorite cousins came in to town from Seattle to spend the weekend and we are heading to the coast to bake pumpkin pies and carve pumpkins with my sister and her husband and more friends and family. On top of that, it’s BEAUTIFUL here today. So I’m a happy camper, indeed. Hugs to you and yours.

Our week ended with an awesome supper and visit with friends that we have not seen in 8 years last night. I love re-connecting with people like this.
The talking thing. I totally get it. Our little princess was like that too, able to carry on a conversation much before two. Her little brother … not so much.

Steve took this morning off and we all went to the market in Penticton, then had hot chocolate at The Bucks, then wandered around downtown. Weekend: officially brightened. It was so great.

After 18 months of unemployment and school, Hubby started his first day of employment, at a nearby hospital that is a great place to work with excellent benefits and oh! its just a dream come true – a prayer answered.
And the beautiful fall days we’ve been having, going for walks with the kids in the mild weather.
