I know I said that I would step out of my comfort zone (maybe) but good grief, you guys. This week has been so completely different than what I thought it would be. I am feeling utterly out of sorts and out of my routine and just…off. After posting on Sunday about how much I was already missing the kids, I shut the laptop and went to see what Matthew was up to. He looked like a lost puppy and was furiously cleaning the house to keep himself busy. We jointly decided to leave on our date night a good two hours before we had originally planned to. Being here without the kids felt weird and odd and empty. We grabbed our things and practically ran out to the truck.

For some reason I thought that I would handle the empty house a little better than I have been. When Matthew and I went to Mexico last year we missed the kids, yes, but we were so busy being enamored with the sun and the sand (and the fresh salsa and Lemonade Electrica’s) that we weren’t missing them to the point of crying about it.

This week has been entirely different. I have cried every day, sometimes more than once. Sometimes to the point where it gets Ugly. For while my kids do have their moments where I would love to walk outside and not come back for an hour (or two), they are actually really neat little people most of the time. There are so many moments in a day where they do something, or say something and I look at them with sheer awe and amazement. How on Earth did I, someone so full of flaws and failures, manage to wind up with three of the most unbelievably phenomenal kids on the planet?

I really don’t know the answer to that.

On Tuesday night we called the kids to say goodnight. I spoke to the three of them and passed the phone off to Matthew. I then proceeded to start the water works while he got caught up on all of that day’s activities. Vacation Bible School! A trip to the swimming pool! They bought Bolt!

When he got off of the phone we took the dog for a walk and he told me that it made his heart smile to see how sad I was. He hates to see me upset, but the fact that I am so torn about the kids being gone made him happy that I am the Mommy to his kids. Which, well, I get that. He’s sad too, and I love that I am married to a man that cares so deeply about his kids. They are so lucky to have him as their Daddy.

OK. Enough of the deep stuff. I’m sitting here with tears streaming down my face and MY WEEK HASN’T BEEN THAT BAD. It’s not as though I have spent the entire week curled up in bed, crying into my pillow. The lack of sunshine (WTH, Mother Nature?) has been disappointing but there have been some seriously good (and fun) times. Those need to be documented as well.

Since we left early for our date night on Sunday, we headed to the mall. I found (what I believe to be) the perfect Little Black Dress. We then went to see Transformers 2. My only complaint is that I wanted to see more Josh Duhamel. We saw him a lot, but there’s never enough Josh, you know?

On Monday night, a few of my fellow Canada Moms Blog ladies spent the night at my house as part of the Mom Road Trip.
Canada Moms Blog Trip

That would be Amanda (Kicky Boots), Tanis (Redneck Mommy), Catherine (Her Bad Mother), Katie (Mother Bumper) and me (obviously).

If you think that these ladies are amazing online, you should meet them offline. Your mind would be blown.

On Tuesday I met up with the bride-to-be for a wedding I’m shooting this coming Sunday. The location is a Southwestern-style B&B overlooking the lake.

La Punta Norte

Bell

Dancing

Geckos

It’s going to be all sorts of awesome.

On Tuesday afternoon, Matthew suggested that we do some wine touring and then go out to dinner at a local bistro. Um, YES. We hit three different wineries.

Wine Tour

Matthew likes this photo better, but I’m torn.

Wednesday consisted of more melancholy (on may part) while Matthew ran his basketball camp. But then! He was done! And we went out on yet another date. Which was perfection, per usual.

Now it is Thursday and as you are reading this I am likely on my way down to pick up the kids. I will be stopping to visit with two of my good friends along the way and then boarding the ferry which will take me to the flesh of my flesh and bone of my bones.

Nothing could make my heart happier.

This post is so sweet! I am sad for you that you missed your kids so much but also I love how great they make your life. I love how real your blog is–you acknowledge that things can get tough, but your pervasive happiness and amazement with your kids always comes through. I hope to feel the same way when I have kids.

It gets better when they go away and they are older…trust me on this. I see mine in 2 days.

I agree with Matthew, I like the 2nd photo better too.

And about the ladies, I am totally green with envy. Seriously

I’m glad they had some time with Grandma – my grandparents used to take one of us overnight at a time and I remember there would be LOTS of bickering over whose turn it was.

At this point in my life I can’t understand those feelings of extreme missing of your children…if mine were away at Grandma’s for a week I would be leaping with joy. Perhaps once my kids are older and not so demanding, annoying and fecally-challenged it would be a different story. :)
Here’s to a happy reunion with the kids, though! Hopefully absence made their little hearts grow fonder too. :)

My kids have stayed with my parents plenty of times, but they only live 5 min away. The “other” grandparents live 2h away, which is a totally different story! I totally get your sadness, I really do. I really miss my kids when they’re not here. But just think – you get to see them again today! ANd like I posted a few days ago, those reunions are TOTALLY AWESOME! :-)
