I started watermarking my photos after this post where I talk about people who had their photos stolen and abused.
Sometimes I wonder if I really need to watermark my photos. Do I think I am so special that people would actually want to steal my photos?
Apparently I am.
I saw an incoming link on my WordPress dashboard tonight and thought it was another new lovely reader who was giving me link love.
I clicked through so I could say “Hello!” and was greeted with this sight:
THAT WOULD BE MY BABY! From THIS POST!
So? I did what any mother would do. I got even.
I would give you the URL, but they are not worthy of the traffic.
Maybe it is petty, but that site owner is a petty thief. I may as well have fun with it.
I know that Jesus said to turn the other cheek. I am just turning two cheeks.
*Dodges lightning bolt*
In all seriousness, stealing is WRONG. If you want to use my photos, ask me. I’ll probably let you, especially if you give me credit.
But to hotlink a photo of mine and pretend that it is yours? Especially if it is a photo of one of my babies???
Watch your back. Momma bears can get pretty nasty.
This is JUST SO WRONG! Makes me want to have NEVER started EVER sharing photos on the Internet. (I mean these are our kids people are stealing here!) These people make me SO angry. Like I said on Twitter, I am SO sad this happened to you:( I hope and pray it never comes to this again.
Water marking is a VERY VERY good idea. I’m going to start doing mine as well, as I have a few already. We all need to who have blogs and such. THESE JERKS!!!

I’m so glad you replaced the photo. They deserve to have their post screwed up because that is just wrong.
Since I manage a very large web site, I have about 50 people in the company who are content contributors for their specific areas and some of them need constant policing to make sure they’re not using stolen photos. It’s so frustrating to try and explain to them why it’s wrong.
You don’t steal a candy bar off the store shelves, so don’t steal a photograph from another site. Why is that so hard for people to comprehend?

If your webhost uses CPanel, you probably can ask to have hotlink protection enabled. When I went over my bandwidth limit in January, I asked to have it enabled. Bandwidth costs money!

Okay I have to de-lurk to say I’m really glad you replaced the photo. That’s exactly why I started watermarking my photos too. I don’t have any (human) kids, so it wasn’t quite as big a deal, but still… that’s just wrong!

good for you for setting it straight! I can’t help but wonder if the person did it without knowing the ‘rules’ and figured that if it’s watermarked then that would somehow suffice in terms of giving you credit? Just a thought. (I’m always ever so optimistic that people aren’t actually too mean-dumb maybe but not on purpose).

That’s horrid!!! Did they claim it was their picture? I couldn’t read the writing around it. That’s SO HORRID! The only pictures I’ve ever taken from a blog were of my niece – and I didn’t post them, I saved them so I could show other people in my family.
