The Reason I Now Watermark My Photos

I started watermarking my photos after this post where I talk about people who had their photos stolen and abused.

Sometimes I wonder if I really need to watermark my photos. Do I think I am so special that people would actually want to steal my photos?

Apparently I am.

I saw an incoming link on my WordPress dashboard tonight and thought it was another new lovely reader who was giving me link love.

I clicked through so I could say “Hello!” and was greeted with this sight:

Theif!

THAT WOULD BE MY BABY! From THIS POST!

So? I did what any mother would do. I got even.

After I “Fixed” It

I would give you the URL, but they are not worthy of the traffic.

Maybe it is petty, but that site owner is a petty thief. I may as well have fun with it.

I know that Jesus said to turn the other cheek. I am just turning two cheeks.

*Dodges lightning bolt*

In all seriousness, stealing is WRONG. If you want to use my photos, ask me. I’ll probably let you, especially if you give me credit.

But to hotlink a photo of mine and pretend that it is yours? Especially if it is a photo of one of my babies???

Watch your back. Momma bears can get pretty nasty.

It is NOT petty. That’s wrong and STUPID. (hotlinking? Dumbass) I love you even more for replacing the photo.

Now, I expect the link in my inbox by tomorrow morning. OR ELSE.

    (Kidding. But also kinda serious.)

  3. OH MY GOSH!! That’s just awful!! I don’t know how you found the other site, but it scares me a little. I mean, people could be using my photos and I wouldn’t even know. How did you find it?? But I LOVE what you did to “fix” it!!!!

  4. I did the same exact thing. A photo of Meredith was hotlinked on MySpace. It was a totally innocent, fully clothed shot and the stupid kid was talking about her breasts. WHAT BREASTS.

I contacted MySpace and they said the person wasn’t in violation.
My “replacement” photo had the word pedophile and a$$hole in it.

Yea, I probably could have turned the other cheek too.

So, this person was acting as if Emily was HER baby?

  5. I first discovered the joy of replacing hotlinked photos about 5 years ago when using eBay and it was common for a new or crooked seller to take another seller’s photos.

  6. Seriously! What was the post about? Did she actually claim this was her baby? Wouldn’t her family clue in or something? And what was her response to your “feedback”?

Thanks for this insightful post.. I realized how careful you have to be about getting photos from google (My main source for hair cuts and sometimes adding interests to my blog) when I realized how much traffic it was pulling into my blog after posting a photo of a cat I found in google photo search.

I’m the one you’re all calling bad names. I read every one of your posts. I didn’t skip one. In my defense, it had nothing to with the child on a personal level. I didn’t claim she was mine, I didn’t even comment on her. It was just a “sleeping baby” to illustrate a point.

On the other, hand- you’re all right. And I earned the *dumbass*. Thank you for correcting my mistake. I wish I could say that I just didn’t know, but every baby picture is a picture of someone else’s baby. I should have thought and I didn’t. It should make you all feel immensely better that I want to go hold my own head under water for a while.

I’m going to go throw up now.

Oh, and for the record, I’m mortified that most of my site hits are because of this whole fiasco. I would much rather remain in anonymity than have a bunch of justifiably outraged people checking out my indiscretion. So if you wanted to punish me further, you did it the right way.

    I’m sorry.
And I’m sorry that I keep leaving all of these comments, but when I find I’ve wronged someone, I can’t let it go until I hear some sort of response back. I’ll continue stewing in my own juices now.

I emailed you to say that we’re cool…

Wow Ange, that sucks. I can’t wait until you do your Foto friday on watermarks. I totally want to start using them. I couldn’t imagine seeing one of my babies on someone elses site.

All they need is ask and give credit – why do they have to steal?

  14. You did well in watermarking your pictures, and even better in dealing with that person. The few times that I have used somebody else’s picture to illustrate any of my posts, I went great lengths to make sure that the owner would authorize it first. And even after that, I would download the picture and then upload it again (so I don’t use their bandwidth) and I would make sure to include a caption indicating where I got the picture from. The picture would even have a hyperlink pointing to the original destination.

Any other way you do it, you’re stealing…

Other business: Congratulations on your second place in the Canada Bloggers Award! I will be going through your blog in the next few days, as I’m always open to making new blog buddies! :-)

Sorry for my bad language but seriously? What are you thinking using someone else’s personal photo?

Way to go Angella, I think your actions were justified!

  16. Angella – I’m just now catching up….I haven’t read blogs in a few days. oh my gosh, I am shocked by all this!!! What I want to know though, is first, how did you find it? You said by your WordPress board? Was it like a site meter and you were just curious who was looking at your blog? And most importantly, how in the heck, can you change a picture on someone else’s blog?? Is that what you did?

I am assuming she copied and pasted your picture or was she linking to it so you cahnged the picture it was linking to? You know I;m pretty technically challenged, if you hadn’t figured that out!!

Anyway, I was just curious. That is really crappy. To steal a picture of EMILY!!! How could she?
