I woke up at four o’clock AM on Friday. That is not a typo. FOUR AM. As in BEFORE THE BUTT-CRACK OF DAWN.
I do this a few days a week, and am not sure if it is classified as insomnia. Going to sleep at night is not a problem for me. I just wake up at hours that are unreasonable to THE REST OF THE HUMAN RACE.
My brain turns on, and all hope of returning to slumber is gone. I get up, drink a glass of milk in the hopes that it will make me sleepy, and return to bed. It soon becomes apparent that I am WIDE AWAKE. So I get up, wander back downstairs, and start working.
This would be unbearable, were it not for the fact that once Honey is awake I can leave him with the kids and crawl back into bed for a “nap” that often lasts at least two hours. Like I did on Friday.
I woke up at eleven to the sounds of he and the kids playing in the yard. I stumbled downstairs and prepared lunch for everyone. Myself included.
Honey then took the kids into town to run some errands and get groceries. I went back to work. They pulled into the driveway just as I was tying up work for the day. I closed my work website and ran outside to play with the kids.
We decided to fill up the kiddie pool. The water was COLD, but the kids had SO MUCH FUN. Each of them had a cup and we had THE HUGEST WATER FIGHT EVER.
It started out with Graham and Nathen chasing each other. While they were standing and chatting, Miss Emily pulled a stealth move. She waddled up behind Nathan’s back and dumped ice cold water on him. Her stealth, and his reaction, were both unexpected and PRICELESS. I laughed so hard that I may have dribbled a little bit.
I don’t have photos of the fight, as I try to keep my camera dry, but I can offer these.
Before the fight, offering his Royalty wave.

Miss Emily, fully concentrating on the water bucket. Don’t ask.

Nathan.

Having WAY TOO MUCH FUN.
The three. From the back.

Also? From the front.

Dang, I have beautiful children. Seriously. At least in my humble opinion.
Saturday is full of work and fun, and Sunday is full of fun and work. Including my very first wedding photo shoot. Woo!
Wish me luck. And send prayers. The forecast is for rain and it is an outdoor wedding. Yikes!
If you do not give a rip about weddings, I would love to hear any “insomnia” tips you have. I’m dying over here. Not literally, of course, but it’s getting to be A LITTLE RIDICULOUS.
See you on the other side of the storm. Have you got anything exciting planned this weekend?

That, my friend, is definitely insomnia! There are different types - the “can’t get to sleep” kind, and your kind.
I can give you a list of some great drugs (because that is what I do for a job, learn which drugs work best) but you are probably after a more natural remedy. I have heard that melatonin works well, and I think you can get it from the health food store. It helps to regulate your circadian rhythm, and it’s an endogenous substance so you aren’t putting anything foreign into your bloodstream.
I’m guessing going to bed earlier doesn’t work??

Comment by Hannah on June 21st, 2008 @ 1:22 amI love when the kids play with water. It’s such a kid-in-summer kind of thing to do! You’re lucky you didn’t get soaked! My kids love to chase and try to dump water on me.
Mar’s last blog post..As per Porters Request
Comment by Mar on June 21st, 2008 @ 5:33 amAh yes, waking early like that…. Happens all the time over here. I think it’s personality. I use to always, always wake at 4 in the morning!? Now it’s 6 or 7, which is a little bit better I guess, but I prefer like 9.
When it was 4, I would get out of bed, get some warm milk and honey (yum), and read my bible and pray about anything and everything on my mind. After an hour, my brain would be all shut off and so sleepy, I’d fall back to sleep rather fast. Perhaps God knew that this was the best time for me to spend time with Him.
Randi’s last blog post..Release Day
Comment by Randi on June 21st, 2008 @ 5:34 amI do it all the time, too. I only get frustrated if I wake up before 4 cuz that’s just TOO freakin’ early. I’m lucky enough to be married to a WAHD and so some days I can grab a snooze- I start to crash after lunch!
Since I’m pretty useless after 7pm- even with a snooze- my early hours are my best. In fact on those occasions where I do sleep later, waking with the rest of the house, I’m a little off. I need the few hours of buffer before contact…..
Good luck on the wedding!
Tracy’s last blog post..Dela- where?!?!
Comment by Tracy on June 21st, 2008 @ 5:57 amGO EMILY!!! I LOVE that she pulled a stealth move. Totally my kind of girl! I have two brothers ( younger, but still!!) and a girl’s got to do what a girl’s got to do!
I have no insomnia advice BUT I can tell you the one thing that has always helped me when I have had sleeping troubles… I have Daniel pray over me before I go to sleep at night.
I tell ya - a husband praying over his wife is a powerful thing.
You have a blast tomorrow at the wedding! You are going to totally knock their socks off!

Comment by Andrea on June 21st, 2008 @ 7:42 amDude. Insomnia SUCKS. Try some Gravol. A nurse friend told me to try it and it worked quite nicely. Take it about 2 hours before you go to bed. Apparently it’s supposed to be the most non-addictive sleep aid.

Comment by sizzle on June 21st, 2008 @ 8:20 amGotta love water fights! I would have loved to have seen Miss Emily’s stealth - sounds hilarious!
Unfortunately I have no insomnia advice. Hopefully you’ll find something that will work!
Good luck with the wedding tomorrow!
Sharon’s last blog post..Summer is here!
Comment by Sharon on June 21st, 2008 @ 11:09 amStay in bed and try to think relaxing thoughts. I know it’s tough, but at least you’re still resting, and you might trick your body into going back to sleep for a bit!
Cute kiddies!
Meg’s last blog post..Guilty Pleasure
Comment by Meg on June 21st, 2008 @ 12:41 pmOkay. I am willing to sacrifice myself for you.
I’ll do a rain dance down here so that you can have clear skies tomorrow up there. Or better yet, I hope you get a slightly overcast day with no rain. Bright, but no harsh shadows… a photographer’s dream… that’s my wish for you. Good luck tomorrow.
ps - I was supposed to shoot some ‘groomsmen’ photos today for a friend. I lost sleep over it (with excitement), but at the last minute they cancelled. Turns out their photographer has an assistant who was going to be with the groom. I was so disappointed! Anyway, have fun tomorrow. You’ll do great!! Don’t forget extra batteries…
And I have no advice on the sleeping. Sorry. I have the same thing happen to me all the time, with no cure. I wake up and lie there for hours, unable to sleep. I usually fall asleep just 5 minutes before I have to get up. Grrrr.
Carolyn’s last blog post..water water everywhere.
Comment by Carolyn on June 21st, 2008 @ 1:31 pmI have been having major insomnia lately and last night was the first night that I had a decent sleep in at least a couple of weeks. Mine is the kind of insomnia where I can get into a daydream-like state where I am not quite awake but I cannot achieve a proper state of sleep for weeks on end. Last night I took a drug called Temazepam and it worked really well but I would not take it at 4am because it is meant to give you eight hours of good sleep and you probably don’t want to sleep until noon! Melatonin and Valerian are natural but they tend to leave me feeling really groggy the next day. Honestly, taking anything at 4am will probably leave you feeling too groggy when you want to get up for the day. Maybe you could keep a really boring book by your bed?
Comment by Tamara on June 21st, 2008 @ 2:53 pmI know it’s a couple of posts ago but you sure suit a nose ring, very pretty. I have the same sleeping problems and in winter it’s worse. Sometimes it’s hormonal or too much going on in your life that you can’t turn your brain off. I’ve never tried sleeping pills and never want too. Try to stop thinking about life at night. Easier said than done, I hope you sleep well tonight.
Comment by Christina on June 21st, 2008 @ 4:38 pmHope your wedding photo shoot went well!
And that you will “sleep in” tomorrow.

Elizabeth’s last blog post..Peace
Comment by Elizabeth on June 21st, 2008 @ 5:15 pmI LOVE weddings - even used to be a wedding coordinator. You’ll have a lot of fun, but don’t let the family drive you crazy - only do what the couple wants!
And get as many naps as possible - that’s the only way the 4am thing will ever work! (Although, maybe once the stress of work is over, the sleeping will get back to normal.)

Comment by Kate on June 21st, 2008 @ 5:59 pmLots of wedding photo luck.
Do your kids have to be posed together or do they always like to stick together? I remember when I was a kid and I’d stay as far away from my brother’s as possible.
Kristie’s last blog post..Gah! It’s about time.
Comment by Kristie on June 21st, 2008 @ 6:16 pmMy advice would be NOT to take Gravol ~ hangover effect! Been there, done that, can’t do it again…
My weekend plans? Flying to Penticton tomorrow!!!!
Comment by Lisa on June 21st, 2008 @ 7:05 pmI’ve heard (wherever it is one hears these things) that there are two basic types of insomnia. One (mine!) is difficulty falling asleep, the other (yours?) is waking up once asleep and being unable to get back to sleep. I’ve tried a few things and have to completely, utterly, 100% recommend acupuncture. I would never have tried it, but my last boyfriend had a degree (diploma?) in acupuncture and convinced me to try it. And boy am I glad I did! He did warn me that it would take a few sessions (unlike when I hurt my back and she popped in a few needles and it was perfect the next hour. seriously) and I’m lucky that I had several sessions covered by my medical insurance. In the long run, however, it’s TOTALLY worth me paying for it out of my pocket for the sanity I now have being able to sleep.
There, that’s my long winded answer
Hope you find something that works as well for you!
Victoria’s last blog post..If You Don’t Choose You Won’t Save the Planet!*
Comment by Victoria on June 21st, 2008 @ 7:59 pmOh, wait! I thought of one more thing that I haven’t tried, but have been promised it works: when you wake up, get immediately out of bed and stand next to the fridge. When your body’s tired enough go back to bed. If you don’t fall back asleep, get up again and stand next to the fridge. No blankets, no lights, no food, just stand there.
I forget the theory behind why it works, but it’s all psychological-like! ![]()

I noticed someone said Gravol above. It works. I use it when I am away because I can never fall asleep without my main squeeze beside me and my kids sleeping down the hall.
Hope the weddding shoot goes well tomorrow!
Kami’s last blog post..Astronomic Proportions
Comment by Kami on June 21st, 2008 @ 8:40 pmI used to deal with this ALL the time. It seems to have gotten better since I’ve gotten married. But periodically, I deal with it. Unfortunately, I haven’t found a solution that works that doesn’t cause me to feel like crap the next day. Which sort of defeats the purpose.
slynnro’s last blog post..Things I am Loving Today
Comment by slynnro on June 21st, 2008 @ 9:00 pmInsomnia is something that I definately do not have…In fact, I believe I have the opposite problem. Sometimes I wonder how many days I would sleep if the alarm didn’t go off!
Sounds like Miss Emily is understanding the trick to having brothers - You can’t stand back and watch, you have to join in!
Good luck with your wedding shoot tomorrow! I’ll say a prayer for you and for some decent weather! I’m sure you’ll do great!
Comment by Michele on June 22nd, 2008 @ 12:18 amI have the same type of insomnia problem. Glad I am not the only one. I have come to enjoy the quiet wee hours of the morning.
Marsha’s last blog post..Some Pics
Comment by Marsha on June 22nd, 2008 @ 9:06 amWell the bad thing about waking up at the ass crack of dawn is that it’s early and um… it’s EARLY. The good news is that I also sometimes wake up at that hour so we can both be exhausted by 3 PM together. Should be fun!
Heather B.’s last blog post..More for their benefit than mine
Comment by Heather B. on June 22nd, 2008 @ 1:37 pmI force myself to go back to bed. Because no one should be up at that hour!
I do the whole relaxing technique where you imagine your body faling asleep, starting at your toes, slowly going all the way up. I learned it the time I was hypnotized.
Can’t wait to hear how the wedding went!

I went to bed early, and woke up at a ridiculous hour, am catching up on a few things (have to prepare for my trip, including loading the laptop with the sound recording and converting software and get the files into a database.) Whee! Now I can have a nap.
