Technical Difficulties

I have been having some issues with my computer and my website.

Not this site that you are reading, but the one that I use for my contract work. It is not their fault, and they are working with me to get the issues resolved. They use a third-party service who decided to upgrade to a New! Better! Platform!

Except that the new platform is slower than molasses. After putting the kids to bed last night, I went to log in to the site to quickly (ha!) check my email and it took me an hour to just LOG IN. An HOUR. I don’t know about you, but I do not want to spend ONE TWENTY FOURTH OF MY LIFE IN THE LOG-IN SCREEN.

In addition to that problem (which included trying to log in from ALL THREE computers in our house), my laptop has decided that it does not want to play nicely with the Internet. After (FINALLY!) getting my work done, I thought I could answer a few emails before editing some photos I had taken yesterday.

It ALSO took me a while, but I EVENTUALLY got into gmail. Then (THEN!) I could SEE the EMAILS but could not OPEN them. I had the gmail that was “Loading…” for almost an hour.

I thought maybe I should try some surfing. The problem was (AND IS) that anything I type on the Internet has about a twenty-second delay. I type, sit back and have a sip of DC, and watch the characters I typed slowly make an appearance. I closed the Internet and walked away from the disaster that is my STUPID VISTA laptop before I heaved it over the embankment.

I may or may not be a little frustrated. In the meantime I am working on this boat anchor of a desktop that I have down in the office. It is five (Five!) years old. It also makes my heart sing for joy. Ha!

I should trade them both in for a Macbook Pro. They say once you go Mac, you never go back. ARE YOU LISTENING, LAPTOP?

I think this photo I took of Graham yesterday sums up how I am feeling.

Grrrrr

I may or may not have looked exactly like that last night. And possibly as I type this.

I use the Internet for work (WHICH PAYS THE BILLS) and pleasure (WHICH KEEPS ME SANE).

As I lay in bed last night (with a sick baby girl), I decided I had two options:

1. Throw my laptop in the lake and eschew anything Internet related. While I am at it I will give up all modern conveniences, including electronics, appliances, and razors. I will start pumping out more babies to, you know, churn butter and pluck feathers off of the chickens.

2. Call in our computer guy to come and fix my laptop. I can then get my work done and save myself (and my family) from joining a commune. Then I can also possibly get back to being an Internet Member In Good Standing.

I really hope it’s the latter. I’ll keep you posted.

Do it! DO it NOW! We would if we could….
Sick Emily?
Is she barfing? Olivia was barfing. I guess what I had was a bug and not that I’m a cheap drunk. Although I AM a cheap drunk just not that cheap.

The internet is a love/hate relationship isn’t it?

Tell Graham I look forward to seeing his silly faces :)

This would make me poke my eyes repeatedly with a pin. Good luck my friend, I hope you get it all sorted out and fast.

A Mac sounds like maybe the way to go?

You’re hilarious. I wish you well (and Little Emily, too). We’re a sick house over here - two boys in bed as a type (on a workday…. means he’s really sick).

Computer problems are the worst. I feel your pain! Hope you’re able to resolve it soon.

Almost everyone I know raves on and on about Mac’s, but I have yet to join the popular party. I like my PC just fine, and the one I bought 2 years ago has served me almost perfectly (a few small glitches here and there, but nothing too major) since then. I’m totally resistant to change, but maybe some day I’ll switch over. All these people raving about it can’t be nuts. Can they?! ;)

Found you via Sizzle and thought I would let you know that I had the exact same problem last evening. Okay maybe is was closer to the middle of the night, but still.

After attempting in vain for more than 2 hours I went to bed. This morning upon waking it worked perfectly. For me, I thought it was my cable but I guess my internet was just being whacky cuz it’s working fine now.

And also, don’t throw it in the lake, even if the only reason not to is that it would be littering [:

Anyway, “hi”! I hope things get better.

I have a macbook but I also have a pc. They play nice together…. BUT I am contemplating the ProTower. Go big!

You MUST choose option 2, because if you withdraw from the internet, then we ALL suffer Dutchblitz withdrawal! No, no, no….

You gotta hate computer problems!! My dinosaur is 9 (NINE!) years old but it generally serves me pretty well.
The timing of your post is pretty freaky, as the website/database I use to do MY work on has been having “timing-out” issues lately, which means saving my work every nano-second, and then turning my modem off and on a zillion times a day. So I completely feel your pain!!

P.S. Choose option 2. PLEASE.

I have heard ALOT of bad things about Vista. Get rid of it! My cousin is a salesman at Future Shop and he steers people AWAY from it. That might be your problem! Good luck with getting things fixed!

I wish I lived closer so I could send Mr. MK over to fix your computer (he’s an IT genius).

Great picture … Graham rocks!

How frustrating!!
I always think it is interesting how the internet has become such HUGE part of our lives.

“…all modern conveniences… and razors.” Thanks for the laugh.

Hope things are back to “normal” for you soon!

I had TONS of problems when I switched to VISTA. After four months of barely being able to use my computer, I was ready to pack it up and return it.

UNTIL… I discovered what my problem is. There is a driver called NVIDIA — when this updates, it screws up the computer. So, I always ROLLBACK this driver and it has worked every time! No more slow computers. Also, i turned off the automatic updates (so it doesn’t update by itself) and I select which files I use for updating.

Give it a try… Rollback and don’t update driver. Good luck!

Sometimes the computer/internet is one of those things that you can’t live with but can’t live without! It can be so frustrating!!! Love the picture of Graham - Having a great day by the look of it!!! Hahaha!

Mac-ity Mac Mac Mac!!!
(I don’t have one but I want to. So, I’ll live vicariously through you if you get one. So, I think that means that you need to get one now.)

Also? I have been eschewing (quite possible the classiest word in the human language) a razor for some time. This means that I am opposite-of-eschewing mountain-man legs and arm pits.

A friend just got a mac and while the learning curve was a little high, he loves it now. Just having some problems with all those people who still use Windows.

Hope it all gets turned around fast for you :)

Get a Mac. I don’t want you drooling then subsequently stealing mine this summer. Because it’s just so damn awesome that you won’t be able to help yourself. Trust me on this one.

I like option one. It sounds like a good one. I’m thinking of doing the same. That and learning to french braid my arm pit hair.

PPFFFTT.

And? Vista SUCKS. And? I heard the same about macs. One day when I’m rich and famous, I’m going to buy myself one.

I think my hubby sleeps with a picture of a mac under his pillow hoping the mac fairy will bring him one, he has me convinced just waiting for the bank account to catch up. I’m glad you decided to call the computer tech guy, I don’t want to witness the riot that would ensue if you tried to leave your ‘internets’ for a commune.

Comment by Amanda Franks on May 8th, 2008 @ 10:29 pm

That is the worst. Is it the new Wordpress version because mine is SO slow that I log in and then go make my lunch because it takes that long to load.

And Vista is Bill Gates’s personal torture on HUMANITY.
