As most of you know, this past July I packed a suitcase, hopped on a plane to Chicago and had four fun-filled days at the BlogHer conference. One of the highlights of that trip (as mentioned in that post) was the chance to meet and spend time with the lovely Kate Inglis of Sweet|Salty fame. I’m sure that you all read her and if not, why not? She’s simply amazing.
She’s also cute and smart and funny and wee and will take twenty or so photos with you in the bathroom.
I don’t exactly know why we did that but we have plans to descend upon another posh bathroom in New York this coming August because, well, why not? I think we might also venture outside of the hotel with our cameras this year because hello? NEW YORK.
Not only is Kate a fellow Canadian, fantastic person and wicked blogger, she just published her very first book. The Dread Crew: Pirates of the Backwoods is a spectacular piece of fiction.
I’m not just saying that because I adore Kate; I’m saying it because it is true. We all know how busy I’ve been but once I started reading the Dread Crew I couldn’t put it down. I pulled a couple of extra late nights just so I could finish it. Last I heard, there are only a few hundred books left in the first run so if you want to buy it, here’s the link to Amazon.ca.
I was lucky enough to receive an advance, signed copy of Kate’s book with a sweet inscription. She sent it to me when I asked if I could interview her over at the Daily Grommet blog. We’ve started highlighting designers, musicians and authors and I knew she would be a perfect fit. I absolutely love Kate’s responses to my interview questions and I’m sure you will too.
Since I got my copy for free and because I love to support my friends and because I think you (and your kids) should read this book and because it’s Christmas…I’m giving away a copy of The Dread Crew.
It gets better! As part of Kate’s interview over at The Daily Grommet blog, I’m giving away a copy over there as well. That giveaway is only open from 9am until 9pm EST, Monday December 14th, 2009. I’ll keep my giveaway here open until 9pm PST, Tuesday December 15th. Both contests are open to Canadians as well. Heck, I’m keeping my giveaway open to anyone.
To sum it up: Leave a comment below and then head over to The Daily Grommet blog. What are you waiting for?
***Edited to add:
I just did the random number generator because we decided to go see a movie last night. (New Moon. I’m on Team Shirtless.) The winner is #39:
Congratulations, Sherry!

I’ve had the opportunity to meet Kate twice, and chickened out because of the illness abounding. It appears that we have had the same long lasting cough. Here’s to wellness, and an actual meetup!

I’m always looking for great picture books. I’m in the elementary education program and always trying to find awesomely illustrated picture books to take into classrooms to share with my students. This looks like a great one!

I’ve never heard of her (yes, I DO live under a rock)
I’ll have to check her out

Comment by rachel-asouthernfairytale on December 14th, 2009 @ 7:48 amAs an American, I’ve had a tough time trying to track this book down for my son. He’d love it, and I’m really curious to read it as well.

Comment by Laura on December 14th, 2009 @ 7:54 amI have two sons 11 and 9. Luckily they both love to read. This sounds like a book we could all enjoy reading together.

Comment by Deanna on December 14th, 2009 @ 8:03 amOh my dear, you are just as good in an interview as you are on the dance floor. I’m so happy you liked the book, and thanks for doing this.
Emily – The Dread Crew is an illustrated novel, not so much a picture book. It’s written for 8-14 year olds – younger with some help (it’s good for reading aloud) and older infinitely… adults are liking it too.
Laura – you can have the book shipped to the States by any Canadian retail site or store. Here are some links that hopefully make it easier for you:
