Sparkly

I don’t know if I have really posted about it, but my eighteen-year-old brother Lance lives with us. He is a really great guy to have around. We give him a room of his own, and he contributes towards the grocery bill. He also watches our (Three!) kids every week or so when we need a sanity break. It is a fantastic arrangement.

He headed back to his Mom’s (my stepmom’s) for the Christmas break and returned yesterday. My stepmom came as well, bringing my other three siblings, as well my sister’s boyfriend (Who is from New Zealand! And sings Flight Of The Conchords! And sounds like Jermaine!) That adds up to eleven people, including my five.

We had bought a big package of fireworks in December. Honey and I considered firing them on New Year’s Eve, but we were creating fireworks of our own (wink, wink, nudge, nudge). Plus, we knew the family was coming and thought it would be more fun to make it a large group event. There is not much else to do out here in the sticks during the winter.

After supper we all bundled up and headed outside. I thought I would blind my little dudes with the built-in flash on my camera.

Don’t eat yellow snow

Um, Graham? Eating snow in the dark is a risky endeavour. How did you know that it was not yellow?

The fireworks got off to a slow start. There were a bunch of flares being fired, and they did not an exciting shot make.

Red rocket

And the rocket’s red glare

Oh, wait. I’m Canadian.

Three flares

These ones came with some loud explosions. I laughed at the thought that our neighbours were probably wondering if we knew that New Year’s Eve was TWO NIGHTS BEFORE?

I was busily aiming my camera at the sky, trying to catch shots of the flares. My stepmom then mentioned that she was having more fun watching how the flares were lighting up the snow.

Bright!

Um, Chad? You might want to remove your head from the vicinity of the FIRE. See how Matthew and Lance are FAR AWAY? You might want to follow their lead.

Red flare, red snow

Or don’t. What do I know?

Shooting FIRE!

Kids, DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME.

Chad survived, and soon the pretty fireworks started.

Orange!

Ooooooh.

Yellow!

Ahhhhhh.

Boom!

After catching that one, I may or may not have jumped up and down and clapped my hands.

This one is my favourite:

Sparkly

It’s nice and sparkly. Pretty.

I’d end this with Happy New Year but I am wondering if you are all tired of that greeting. Instead I will use Graham’s favourite phrase, thanks to his current TMNT obsession.

Cowabunga, dudes.

  1. Nice fireworks!! We had some on New Year’s Eve, but I didn’t get photos this time.

P.S. Most Kiwi guys sound like Jermaine! ;-)

  3. I LOVE fireworks! They are seriously the best thing ever. I’m like a total child when I watch them. I scream and clap and am overall in awe. My friends love watching me watch fireworks.

While I was on vacation I saw fireworks twice, which was great fun. The Hilton does fireworks every Friday night. Even though it’s only a 15 minute show, it’s spectacular.

  5. Our fireworks display here in Nelson wasn’t that great… plus I was in a hot tub and there was a huge tree blocking my view. But, wow… great photos.

  6. Shooting off fireworks on New Year’s Eve is a much better way to welcome the new year as opposed to shooting guns in the air. People tend to do that around here and the news always has to remind people, “We’re in a large city… don’t do that morons!”

  7. I envy your home, and your land. ENVY it. It’s beautiful and spacious and snowy.

Oh to be out away from people again….-insert dreamy sigh-

  9. Fireworks are an appropriate outlet for all family pyromaniacs.
My brother went into the military so he could indulge his urges hehe.

  10. 1. I’d love to have a live in babysitter! We tried to convince my sister-in-law to stay with us when my husband’s parents moved (she’s 18 as well) but it didn’t work. *pout*

    2. I’m quite impressed by those firework pictures!

    3. My daughter is also addicted to that new TMNT movie. Watches it every day. I mean I restrict her TV time to only half an hour a day. I’ll be a good mom one day! hehe

  12. I may or may have not said on New Year’s Eve, “Ninja Turtles are GAY.” Of course I may or may not have had a few drinks by that time, and I do not actually think that Raphael and the crew are homosexual.

    Happy New Year!

  21. What great fireworks pictures!

Our neighborhood always lights up like a candle on holidays. (And the odd Tuesday. Just because.) I once saw a bunch of kids setting off one of the big guys that explodes over the roof tops. But it didn’t catch right and exploded on the ground, sending 6 teenagers diving for shelter behind trees and cars. There was much cursing and ducking.

  22. I would love to have that kind of arrangement. I love having friends and family live with me but adding one more person to this tiny house would probably cause a nuclear explosion!

    AND

    LOVE Flight of the Conchords!

  23. I got all excited because “Ooh you live with an 18 year old and he might be a hot Canadian who will come bearing Smarties.” Then realized that I’m actually two old for an 18 year old. So yeah.
