Reason #852 Why I Hate Winter

I was going to do a big boring post about how if today was Evaluation Day for my job as a parent? I would have failed.

MISERABLY.

Instead of beating myself while I am down (something which I am an expert at), I will relate the portion of my day which was not entirely my fault, and which is just kind of tragic.

It concerns Miss Emily.

Miss Emily

She of the “Must Touch EVERYTHING” stage.

I had some of my peeps (and their little peeps) over for a play date this morning. As I was dropping Graham off at school (and freezing my hiney off) I called Honey and asked him to light the pellet stove in the downstairs family room so that it would be nice and toasty for all of our guests.

Toasty it WAS! Partially due to the flames, and partially due to the fact that we had seven children three and under running around all willy nilly.

After everyone left, Matthew and Emily went to vacuum up the eleventy billion pieces of stepped-on Goldfish crackers while I made lunch.

All of a sudden there was a blood-curdling scream.

Miss Emily had pushed aside our barricade and placed her fingertips on the face of the pellet stove. We immediately submerged them in water and called the BC nurse hotline. They assessed it as a second degree burn as all four fingertips on her right hand have blisters.

If we did not have WINTER, we would not need FIRE.

STUPID WINTER.

We went to our doctor as well and she assessed the same. Emily is happy as long as her hand is submerged in cold water. When she takes it out and it starts to sting, she plunges it back in the water. She knows that the cold water soothes. She is a smart one, that girl of mine.

Well, except for the time she pushed the safety guard aside and BURNED HER FINGERS.

Tonight is going to be awesome. I can tell already.

I do not have a photo of her blistered fingers, but do have one that I took yesterday of her chubby baby feet.

Chubby Feet

Sigh.

I feel better for writing this and getting it out. Thanks for listening. Er, reading.

Stupid winter.

  1. Ohh ouch! My cousin’s little guy who’s about 1 month younger than Emily did that exact same thing just before Christmas. He wound up with second and third degree burns on both hands, he did a hand plant into the stove. It’s not fun, but he’s healing up great. I’m sure after tonight (which may not be fun…or she might sleep like a dream because she’s so tired from the day) she’ll forget all about it. And you will got back to feeling like the fabulous momma you are!

  2. aww bless her little heart! I too have had my children move safety measures out of the way and either get hurt or burn themselves, curiousity just gets the best of them. I sure hope she gets better soon! Motrin or tylenol will do her some good tonight with the pain. and I just love the pic of her chubby baby feet!! get well lil Em, and mom too!

  7. Oh, no! All four fingers, too. :-( To make you and Matthew feel less alone, I will tell you how last summer Annalie touched a halogen light that we have under our counter (one of those hockey-puck ones) just after it had been turned off. She thought it was like the one LED light we also have under our counter, which has a button in the center that you tap to turn it on. So she tapped the center of the HOT HOT HOT recently-turned-off halogen light and burned two fingers. She had blisters for about a week, and insisted on bandages on both fingers for two weeks. We found that those cooling burn bandages really helped her out.

I hope Miss Emily’s fingers heal quickly. I will be praying! xxoo

  17. Oh I hate those days. The days when you feel like the worst parent ever. That feeling when your child gets hurt is the WORST. And when my child gets hurt, I feel like I failed her. But in the grand scheme of life, they will not remember and hopefully you will forget too.

I hope your little girl has a good night!

  21. Hey Angella,

I’ve no experience in the burned child end of the experience, but you know how when you have a sunburn that putting wet washcloths on it feels nice…until you remove them and the skind drys and gets tight and itchy? Maybe try ice or peas or something that won’t actually wet her fingers? You don’t want her blisters to get pruny from all the water….

Again, I have NO EXPERIENCE in this area….just a thought I had.

  31. Oh dear. My little Marty did something similar last summer. He was just learning to walk and was fascinated by any new opportunity to explore. He crawled through the momentarily opened patio door and reached up, to pull himself up, on the rim of the BBQ! Big blisters appeared right away on both hands and he wouldn’t let us soak his hands. He calmed down quickly but we went to ER and they put the burn cream on and wrapped him all up. He looked like a little boxer. It was miserable keeping the bandages clean and dry for the next week but he bounced back pretty quick. I was actually surprised at how little it seemed to bother him with blisters across both palms and on several fingers. I’m glad Miss E is up and walking and not on all fours, and how great the she allowed the healing to go quicker with the cold water. Good girl you got there, already using her woman’s intuition! (If only her that had kept her away from the stove in the first place … )

We have steam radiators that get eleventy billion degrees and I am paranoid of her touching them, pulling up on them or falling into them. There are 9 in the house..no way to barricade them off…just praying we don’t learn the hard way. Poor Emily, that sounds just miserable, 2nd degree…OUCH!
