On my 5 questions post, I asked if there were any burning questions that you all needed to ask. I only got a couple of them, but they were good questions requiring somewhat lengthy answers…so here goes.
Liz asked “Will you only adopt from BC, or would you go international?”. Robyn said, “I’m curious to know more about your adoption thoughts if you feel comfortable posting more about that sometime.”
First of all, I want to put a disclaimer: we are not necessarily planning to adopt. I don’t want to be one of those people who talks about doing big things and then doesn’t follow through. It is something we’ve talked about as a possibility, and that’s all it is right now. Talk.
The morning before we had our house fire, a woman who runs an orphanage in Malawi spoke at our church. Her stories brought me to tears, and I talked to her afterwards about the possibility of adopting from Malawi. That country doesn’t really do adoption (unless you’re Madonna), so we started looking to see where else had needy children.
We started looking at Haiti, and justified International adoption because here in Canada, kids are looked after under our system. After talking to a few families who have adopted from Canada (and hearing about other people through friends), we started thinking about adopting locally. There are many children just like ours who have no permanent home. No Mom and Dad to call their own. Yes, their basic needs are covered, but some get moved around a lot. The thought of kids like ours being in temporary care breaks our hearts, so we would likely look locally first. If that didn’t pan out, we would look Internationally. Again, it’s pure speculation at this point.
And on days like today when I’m extra tired and the boys are extra rambunctious, I think about adopting them OUT. Kidding. Maybe.
Amanda F asked, “Is your current career the one you’ve always wanted to have or do you have a dream career lurking in your daydreams?”
I will be a complete and utter dork and tell you all that I love being a Chartered Accountant. For you Americans, the CA designation is the highest one you can hold in Canada. I did thirty months of articling and wrote a 4-day exam to get to use those initials.
Working in public practice was OK, but I have done my fair share of tax seasons. Now that I’m on the educational side, I truly love my career. I do a wide array of writing for them, as well as online facilitating and teaching in person. I love, love, love what I do. As an added bonus, it pays very well. Helps with my DC and Stamping addictions.
I have had a few people leave comments and even email me telling me that I should try and publish my writing. While statements like that make my heart all warm and fuzzy, I know many other bloggers who are far superior with their writing skills. I also feel that if I were to submit something, I would get a response along the lines of:
“Dear Angella. Thank you for your submission. Nice try, but WE DON’T THINK SO. HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!”
I’m too sensitive for that kind of rejection.
It would be nice to be paid for blogging. I have had a couple of people suggest I put ads on my site. My numbers keep getting bigger (Hi!), but I would likely only bring in about $2 a month. That wouldn’t even put a nick in my DC budget, so I won’t bother. I will just keep doing this for fun. And the laughs. And the connections. And the comments. I’m a comment junky, but you knew that.
reddirtroad asked, “Some people collect Beanie Babies. Do you collect anything?
Yes. Empty Diet Coke bottles. The last time Matthew did our recycling, he came home with a big wad of cash. I won’t tell you how much because then you will all come over and hold an intervention.
Hi. My name is Angella and I’m a Diet Coke-aholic.
Seriously though, I don’t collect anything. I guess you could count my collection of stamping and scrapbooking supplies. I have a huge stash and have not been making much time to use them. This is part of the reason I’m so stinking tired today – I’ve been staying up late the past few nights in order to have some creative time.
My sister Mel collected clowns when we were growing up. That was absolutely fantastic, considering that clowns FREAK ME OUT. Seriously! Could they BE any creepier? I don’t think so.
*shudder*

Hehe, my sister hates clowns too! I personally don’t have an issue with them. But I wouldn’t collect them.
I think adoption is way cool. I think it is awesome that you guys are *talking* about it. Pray about it too.

I just heard that if you adopt from the USA they will pay you 50K US/year until the kid is 18 if you keep them as american citizens. Crazy eh? Now that I know, I’d feel guilty if i did because I’d question my motives! Your Blog looks great by the way… nice update! it would be nice if you posts still had the “time of post” on them. For some reason that interests me!

Great answers to some tough questions…I collect old running shoes…not really by choice, I just can’t bear to part with all those ‘running’ memories. What a suck-I know!

I too think of adopting, they are just so many kids that need homes and it is heartbreaking.
And if you sent in your writing, they SO wouldn’t laugh, ’cause it’s great

I just have to laugh after all of the comments on your blog about adoption. My husband and I have three adopted children and I have to say that the process and everything is not as glorified as everyone is making it out to be. Also one of our children is from the States and no one anywhere is paying us money each year to keep him an American Citizen. In fact we paid out quite a bit of money just for the chance to call him our son.
