Last night after supper, I sat down at my laptop. The dishes were cleared and the dishwasher was humming (Thanks, Honey!). Emily was having her third nap of the day and the boys were playing behind me and building towers with their blocks.
I answered some emails and added some HTML to my template. I thought I’d do a little surfing and clicked on Leah’s site. She had great news!
It’s National De-Lurking Week. I had no clue (I don’t get out much. Though you would think that would mean that I WOULD have a clue, what with more opportunity to be on here), and I thought I’d draft a witty post to see if I could get some new people to come on out and say “hiâ€. I even found a cute little de-lurking logo:

I logged into my site and had just started typing when my world went black. Literally. The power was out.
The only light to be seen on our property was the dim glow emanating from my laptop screen. I told the boys to stick close while Daddy got the flashlight.
We lit candles, and the boys wandered around with their “Cars†flashlights that we got them for Christmas. Emily woke up and joined the campout in the great room. We plugged in our corded phone so we could call the hydro company to see what the deal was.
We have had some gusty winds and power lines were downed. The message said that power would be on around 11 pm. Riiiiight.
We were all in bed before 9. You might guess that would mean a good night’s sleep, but you would be guessing WRONG. No power means no heat. Even though we have a wood-burning furnace, it needs electricity to blow heat throughout the house. Matthew is my personal space heater and the boys got to experience that first hand. It was freezing in their room.
Emily was also cold, so I snuggled with her in her room. Not a whole lot of sleep going on for me, but she was sure cozy.
The power was NOT back on at 11 pm. It came on at 11 AM. So that means insult was added to injury. Not only did I have a crappy sleep, I couldn’t even have my standard breakfast to cheer me up. Oatmeal and a latte are my morning comfort food. Both require power to prepare. Power we did not have.
Our house is so very quiet without the hum of the fridge, furnace, etc. We also have humidifiers on in the kids’ rooms. We live in dry country, and it also serves as some white noise. Bonus. You can hear every creak that occurs in this old house. You can every creak that occurs in this old body of mine, for that matter.
So, Matthew took the boys out for a bit so that Emily (and I) could nap. The boys are sweet, and nice, but also VERY LOUD. It was a great idea, except I forgot to turn off the phone. Make that a tiny half-hour nap for my princess. Nothing like a short nap for her to make me even grumpier…
But the power came back on in time for Miss Emily to have her second nap. Her humidifier is humming away, and the heat is back on in the house. She should be back to her longer nap schedule.
I plan on having my oatmeal and latte for lunch, and then working on having a shower, etcetera. After all I’ve been through, don’t you think it’s time you said hello? If not for me, then for my cute kiddies? It’ll make my day.
You regulars can say hello too. I always love to hear from you.

hey there Angella!! that sucks to hear about the power being off for so long. I hate when it goes out but worse when it’s for more than a couple of hours. I can’t believe the weather BC is getting right now, hopefully you guys aren’t getting it that bad. We started getting snowstorms again over here in Saskatchewan, but i guess that’s to be expected in January. anyways take care!!

You know I feel you on the cold house!

I am in Nebraska…don’t know if it has been on the news there…but some of our relatives have been without power (and all the other fun stuff) for 1 1/2 weeks now. They are telling them another 4-6 weeks. Imagine that! So be thankful you were only out for so long.
[Reply]
Helloo.
Glad you’ve got power again!
[Reply]
Allo! C’est moi!
[Reply]
Power outages can be a bummer when you live out in the country I have experienced that at my parents for 24 hours
It’s fun when you are older and can make tents with blankets in the room that has the fireplace though
Evangeline also hates HATES her carseat and does not sleep well anywhere else either she likes being home. I personally think her careseat hurts her tummy because I put her in it and she proceeds to throw up and cry I always feel terrible they should try and invent one that is less sharply angeled and doesnt scrunches their little bellies up!
[Reply]
Glad your powers back!
[Reply]
sounds like a real bummer of a night and morning! I don’t like it when things get all out of sorts like that either, I LIKE routine!!
[Reply]
I’m happy I’m no loger a “lurker”
And thanks for the heads up about “when ya know, you know!
[Reply]
Oh, the weather is so unpredictable lately. We were supposed to get -20 or something like that, but the sun was shining and the snow was melting. Very odd. Hope you catch up on some sleep soon.
[Reply]
Glad your power is back on, it’s tough to entertain toddlers without power! Hope you all get a good, long sleep tonight!
[Reply]
Okay… I just “de-lurked” on Amanda’s site, so while I’m on a role, I’ll say “hi” here too. Glad to hear the your getting toasty warm again… take care!
[Reply]
Angella, i read your blog faithfully. I feel like I know you, in fact, I had a dream the other night that I was at a surprise party for Honey at your house. Weird hey? PS I am Jen’s mom.
[Reply]
I think you know I read your blog, but here’s some reassurance.
[Reply]
Just saying “hi” I was worried that we were going to find a tree crashing through our roof, last night!
[Reply]
glad to see your power came back on ….the lights were flickering in town lastnight but didn’t go out! hope you enjoyed your latte and oatmeal
[Reply]
I’m feelin’ for ya on that latte deal…no warm drink in the morning? And especially after a night like that? Rough stuff. Glad to hear things are good to go.
[Reply]
I cannot stand being cold!!! I feel for ya.
[Reply]
I LOVE oatmeal and lattes for breakfast! I have that delightful combo nearly every morning.
And I’m glad your heat’s back on b/c I reeeeaaaaaallllly hate being cold!
Thanx for the nice email. That’s really irritating that you can’t comment hey? Hmmm..I wonder what that could be. I think I’ll get Lowell the Computer Whiz to look more into that. Are you still getting pop-up ads??
Oo, this is getting long. Perhaps I should’ve just emailed. Oh well, comments are always more fun:)

Hey Angella, I know I already posted but I know of another site for kids. It is called ready set learn. I am not sure of the website address but jillian really likes to play on it, I think Graham would like it.

Glad things are back to normal – no power is not good!

I hear ya-we were out for 4 days a couple of weeks ago. When the power came back on…it actually scared me! Thank goodness for BBQ’s!
[Reply]
Hi!
Glad you have power again!
You do have cute kids!
[Reply]
Good thing you have power again. I am certainly glad that didn’t happen here. We have no wood stove and it was -42 ish today. THe peace and quiet I would like just for a little while.
[Reply]
I think your Honey should be getting a generator!! Glad it didn’t last for too long!!
[Reply]
Isn’t it freaky how dependent on power we are? I would be very, very sad to have it off for so long, especially in the bleak midwinter for you guys.
[Reply]
I will no longer be a lurker!! I’ve been reading your blog for quite some time, I feel as if I know you personally. I grew up in Summerland also. Take care!
[Reply]
I’d just like to say that I’m in australia. It’s hot here, reminds me of okanagan heat actually…but I think I’ve adjusted to it, it’s been like 30 degrees the last few days and I’m wearing sweaters and pants. That’s mostly because our lecture room is freezing!
Say hi to everyone for me!
[Reply]
The weather is very strange this year, it’s like the East and West of this country have swapped winters.
[Reply]
We never lost power yesterday, but that was one heck of a blizzard! It’s minus 30 right now, not counting the windchill. It’s a wonder how people did it in the “olden days”, isn’t it?
[Reply]
Hi Angella,
Reading your blog is like reading a newspaper column. It’s kind of weird, because I feel like I know you really well, and you don’t know me at all! This blog stuff is kind of new to me, and strange and fascinating! I hope you don’t mind that some of us “older” moms check you out!
[Reply]
Hi Angella!
Thought I’d take this opportunity to finally say hi. I haven’t seen you since Jenny’s wedding, when you were kind enough to let Kyle and I stay at your place. That’s a long time ago! I’ve been checking in on you ever since Karen started her blog up, but never took the time to comment. Love what you and Matthew have done with the house, and I love hearing about your three amazing kids. Thanks for sharing!
[Reply]
Hy, the last time we were “powerless” me and my fiancee learned to love each other in other light…hmmm!
[Reply]
Hmmmm….lattes! Love them! Also love reading about you and your kiddies as always!
[Reply]
Hi,I’m Amanda’s mom and Avelyn’s grandma, and I read your blog all the time.I enjoy reading all of Amanda’s friends blogs because it makes me feel like I can share a little of her life in Summerland.I also am a latte lover, and have al least two a day(made with my lovely Starbucks barista espresso maker, that will probably fall apart now that the two year warranty is done!)

I thought I had better de-lurk. I am a friend of Kamis. I enjoy reading your blog. I have 2 kids but would love to have 3 (my husband is happy with only 2) so I guess I am living vicariously through you
You have cute kids and a great writing style.

Hello=)
Glad you got your power back! The humidifier’s for ‘white noise’ are a great idea…I might have to try that. It’s really dry here too!
[Reply]
Having the power go out scares me everything in this house runs off of electricity. Water…we have a well, heat ect it would not be fun. Sorry to hear about your cold sleepless night.
[Reply]
Hi Angella,
I am de-lurking aswell.
I read your blog quite often, along with Christy, Amanda and Whoorls, You four are just so down to earth about life but so comical!!It’s kind of weird, because I feel like I know you really well, and you don’t know me at all! Technology…

Hi Angella!
My name is Kelle and I have been reading your blog for a while now. I just wanted to introduce myself. I came across your blog on Jen’s blog. I have enjoyed reading your posts – you’re so funny! And you have the most adorable children!
[Reply]
Hi Angella it feels like so long since we’ve seen you guys but I still check in to see the pics
[Reply]
Hi! I’m pretty sure you got that wind storm from us. Sorry:(
[Reply]
I’ve delurked here before. I also lurk on fellow Capernwrayers sites like Amanda and Christy. I admire the circle of friends that you women have in Summerland.
Just wanted to let you know that it blizzarded in Alberta this week so I can sympathize with bad weather. And it is -30 in the Great White North of Fort McMurray.
