PMS SOS

Murphy’s Law has proven that it is the reigning force over my life yet again. (Not Reigning with a Capital R – we know Who that is. He has a sense of humour, however, and likes to let Murphy have his way with me). I am crazy busy these first two weeks of August. I have established that already. I’m tired, I’m worn out, I’m possibly a little grumpy.

I had been craving Ariba chips and chocolate. Not together, but randomly. I was also easily enraged/weepy, sometimes at the same time. Then yesterday morning it was clear as to why I was a force to be reckoned with a bit more crazy than I usually am.

My menses arrived. Just what I needed this week.

I am a woman who is not regular, has a heavy flow and has cramping to rival labour (I can say that seriously; I’ve laboured three times). Is that too much information? Would you rather me talk about my labour with Graham where I pushed out a turd? Because that was one of my finest moments. No? Alright, let’s stick with the monthly talk.

During my teenage years I spent one out of every twenty-eight to thirty-five days curled up in bed with a hot water bottle with tears streaming down my cheeks. These days, I have been hooked up with a great painkiller that takes the edge off. I’m still a little uncomfortable but it enables me to stand upright. The remaining discomfort isn’t as bad as it was the other day when I ate too many of Amanda’s cherries. Oy.

Today is Day Two which is always the worst. Always. And? I have to go and mark student exams all day; I can’t call in sick. Or leaking.

Since I know this is one thing that all of we ladies have in common, I’m asking for you to help me out. I need a pick-me-up and I wouldn’t mind trying out some new PMS snacks. Do me a favour, will you?

1. What is your must-have at this time of the month, food-wise?

2. Do you have a favourite funny You Tube clip (or other link) that you would like to share with me (and everyone who reads this site)?

(You can answer either…or both)

My current favourite is the one over on my sidebar, but for those of you who haven’t seen it, here it is for you: Flight of the Conchords – Business Time.

It’s going to be a long day, but I’m looking forward to seeing what goodness you all bestow upon me.

Warm banana bread, chocolate, homemade mac and cheese- all the comfort foods are what I crave at this time of the month.

As for YouTube clips I was going to suggest the Business Time one, until I saw that had already seen that. Too funny. This kid always makes me smile too: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QlfO1C2QcvY

  2. My new favourite thing is Sweet and Salty granola bars (Nature Valley). Mmm good.

And this is Bill Cosby’s childbirth analogy… I found it hilarious before I had kids, now it’s hysterical.

Also his dentist routine… I almost peed my pants when we saw him live a few years ago….

Have a good day and hope your drugs are helping. I had similiar experiences as a teenager but thankfully now that I have kids, things are very mellow. I wish the same for you and pronto.

    2. I still love this one of this wee boy trying to help his baby brother by telling his Dad about the blood he sees! hee hee

  5. 1. Dense, chocolatey things like fudge brownies. Then some thickly sliced white bread toasted and covered in buttah.
    2. We’ve been watching the actual shows of Flight of the Conchords on alluc.org and peeing ourselves nightly.
    Feel better soon!

  6. yeah, just as stereotypical as everyone…the old ying and yang of salty then sweet and round and round it goes. I am a huge fan of tortilla chips and fresh guacamole…I can pound that. I love homemade cream cheese icing and dipping animal crackers or pretzels into it! DELICIOUS!

  7. My menses started this morning. SIGH.
I didn’t have PMS like last month though – thank goodness!! But like you, I am blessed with heavy and painful periods. I also have endometriosis. Together, they make for a FUN week every month!!
Chocolate is my weakness, even when I don’t have my period. But it becomes more of a guilty pleasure when Aunt Flo is staying.

Sorry I don’t have a funny video for you … but I see you have some others to check out. I hope they cheer you up somewhat.

From another menstruating woman who can’t call in sick (or leaking) today. We are united in our pain (and frequent trips to the bathroom). Raise your hot water bottle to US!!

Old Dutch Restaurant Style Sea Salt & Hint of Lime Salsa Spoons.
    Glorious.
Especially with freshly made guacamole (with extra garlic.)
Finished off with a Snickers bar.

  9. Yogurt, Honey and Any kind of puff type cereal. It’s “healthy” and still satisfies the sweet tooth. :)

  10. Sorry you’re in pain. I also love pretzels dipped in homemade frosting. I’m a bit irregular too, so I never know it’s PMS till after the fact, either. My husband usually can tell, but he’s smart enough to not say a word until after the PMS is gone and my sense of humor has returned. ;-)

This isn’t a hilarious clip or anything, but I really enjoy reading Jamie Madigan’s blog. I started reading it originally because of the weekly updates he wrote about his first daughter, Sam, because she’s a couple of months older than Annalie and it gave me a good preview. But I really enjoy everything he writes, which ranges from book/game/movie reviews to photography tutorials (he’s a fantastic amateur photographer), and still a weekly update about his two daughters. He is a very funny guy, and I am sure you won’t read far before finding something funny. Especially this. Or this.

I tend to lean towards the sweet side, so it’s penny candies for me! Then to wash it down I like Island Farms chocolate milk…Nobody can make it like them!

  14. I always go back and forth with a salty type of snack – most likely mrs. vickie’s salt and vinegar chips and then some type of chocolate :)

Here is a funny youtube clip: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MRNntNBEUF0

And let me tell you, I used to get the same cramping problems and I couldn’t even function – I havent’ had children, yet and I was always more than positive that that had to be what labour was like – it was horrible. Then I fixed it by taking a certain little pill – I can’t imagine going back to those days!

Hope this helps :) Happy marking!

  16. Besides the cramping and bloatedness, I generally feel better once my period has actually arrived. The PMS before-hand is usually quite rough for me emotionally though. I want baking. Any kind of homemade, carb-filled, fresh baking. I want some right now. I also usually want sex also, which is kind of odd considering how generally bitchy I am at that time. I like scowling at, and rolling my eyes at the little removable strip on the bottom of the pad that says ‘Have a Happy Period’. I mean, seriously.
I have no suggestions for you, as I’m feeling quite cynical today but I enjoyed your post and I hope you feel better.

    1. Salty oatmeal cookies, here’s a link to the recipe
    http://vegweb.com/index.php?topic=15199.0.
you can substitute eggs and butter for the vegan substitutes. The sugar to salt ratio that I like is 2:1 sugar to salt.

  18. I feel your pain! I have the same issue and my world pretty much stops when I feel this way. What I do find helps is some nice fudgy chocolate cake, with cream filling, preferably.

    Hope you feel better soon!

  19. I was just going to say Flight of the Conchords – Buisness time, very funny. PMS is bad you poor girl. I sometimes go right crazy the day before. I love chocolate, I just finished off a box of Traditions ice cream bars from Costco I ate six out of twelve.
