I was hanging the laundry on the clothes line yesterday afternoon. With almost every piece of clothing I picked up I would recite a quote in my head that was told to me many years ago.
Tops by their bottoms, and bottoms by their tops.
That is the trick to keep from getting clothespin marks on your clothes. Now you know!
While I hung each piece (Shorts, and shirts, and undies, oh my!) I started thinking about the other sayings I quote to myself in order to get things right.
Whenever I haul out the power tools or take a shower (Daily! Sometimes twice!) I recite and oldie but a goody.
Righty tighty, lefty loosey.
This is to prevent me from drilling holes in my fingers, or from freezing and/or scalding my tush.
Another classic saying helps me with directions. I cannot for the life of me remember East from West. Though I do know that I live in Western Canada, so at least there’s that. However, if I know which way is North, then I am GOOD TO GO. Starting at the North point, I use my index finger and move clockwise.
Never Eat Shredded Wheat
(North, East, South, West)
(No offense to any Shredded Wheat eaters.)
All along you guys thought I was so smart. FOOLED YOU.
One of my girlfriends used to get left and right mixed up all the time (Not ME. I’m SMRT.) She would hold up each hand, close her pinkie, ring, and middle fingers, which left her index finger and thumb sticking out.
(Go ahead, do it. I’ll wait.)
The left hand makes an L, which is backwards on the right hand. She did this more times a day than I could count and it always gave me glee at the innocence of it all.
I cannot be the only one who does this. How about you? Are there any sayings that you use frequently to help you figure stuff out?

Righty Tighty, Lefty Loosey - Always. My husband laughs about it.
Also on direction, I’m fine with North and South, but West and East confuse me, so I always have to say, “And it spells WE!”
Michele’s last blog post..The Block
Comment by Michele on July 8th, 2008 @ 7:26 ami use (never eat sour watermelon) for north east south west. i also use (i before e, except after c)
and i ALWAYS count on my fingers.
GymBrat’s last blog post..this fella i love
Comment by GymBrat on July 8th, 2008 @ 7:28 amI do that with spelling and grammar. (”I before E except after C and words like neighbor and weigh.” or “People are well. Things are good.”) I have Mike repeating my ridiculous sayings. But it helps!
She Likes Purple’s last blog post..Let’s Talk About It, Shall We?
Comment by She Likes Purple on July 8th, 2008 @ 7:33 amWhen screwing things I close my eyes and try to remember which way the clock hands turn.
For determining East and West I face North and say WE, west (W) then east (E) in the order you would read the word WE.
Marsha’s last blog post..Spike’s Pickleball Paddles
Comment by Marsha on July 8th, 2008 @ 7:38 amI’m a L-shaped finger holder and a righty tighty lefty loosey. It really is the only way I can tell sometimes. It’s like my brain has a mental block on left and right. Also, when using “its” or “it’s” I always have to say it as “it is” in my head to know which one to use.
That Girl Crystal’s last blog post..Cleaning House
Comment by That Girl Crystal on July 8th, 2008 @ 7:45 amI have to use Lefty Loosey, Righty Tighty (I’m a lefty, so of course that goes first) to know which way to turn the outside faucet on or off — I don’t soak myself with the sprinkler. And also for screwdrivers. Hubby says I’m “such a girl”.
I also use (Never Eat Sour Watermelon). And I before E…
And “Red sky at night…sailor’s delight. Red sky in morning…sailor’s take warning.” if the sunset is red…the next day will be smooth sailing. It’s not always true, but whenever I see a red sky, I say it to myself.
I’ve never heard the saying about hanging your clothes on the line, but I’ve always done it that way. Now I’m sure the next time I do, I’ll have that little phrase in my head. Thanks a lot Angella!
Comment by Beth on July 8th, 2008 @ 8:13 amI’m a Never Eat Soggy Waffles gal, myself. I still remember the boy to taught that to me in 4th grade.
(found my way over from KickyBoots…)
ikate’s last blog post..Long weekend ’staycation?
Comment by ikate on July 8th, 2008 @ 8:24 amI do the Never eat Shredded Wheat. I used to do the L to figure out right from left but then I would hold both my hands up and both L’s would look weird and I couldn’t figure out which was correct. So now I just think about what hand Iw ould pick a pen up with and know that it’s my right. To spell Wednesday I always say “We do not eat soup donuts and yest” My brother taught me that in grade one. I always use I before E except after C - ALOT.
Comment by Robyn on July 8th, 2008 @ 8:32 amGreat post…funny what we think to ourselves as we go through the day! I have definitely used a few of these
Hee - I love those sayings! I’m a Never Eat Shredded Wheat gal myself, but sometimes switch it up with Never Eat Slimy Worms. I used the L thing occasionally when I was younger, but don’t do it so much any more. I’m sure there are more sayings I use, but I can’t think of anything right now.
Sharon’s last blog post..Road trips
Comment by Sharon on July 8th, 2008 @ 8:58 amI’m a Never Eat Soggy Waffles girl, as well as Righty tighty/Lefty loosey.
I also do my nine timestables on my fingers. I know them in my head, but the finger trick I was taught in grade 3 is just more fun. ![]()
Marianne’s last blog post..Aqua-ouch.
I use “Californication” by RHCP to figure out east and west.
The sun may rise in the east/at least it’s settled in the final location
That’s how I know my house faces west!!
St’s last blog post..An “Ampah” Day

There’s a reason these sayings exist!
sizzle’s last blog post..Living The Life
Comment by sizzle on July 8th, 2008 @ 9:23 amlol…I use the “rightey tightey lefty loosey” ALL the time. I also use “Never Eat Shredded Wheat” but since I can rarely find north this doesn’t help me much. I don’t use the L trick but you will regularly catch me “ghost writing” because my RIGHT hand is the one I WRITE with. Yeah.
Renee Daniels (aka Indygirl)’s last blog post..Conversation with a coworker
Comment by Renee Daniels (aka Indygirl) on July 8th, 2008 @ 9:32 amI love hanging laundry out to dry, too! It makes me happy.
Let’s see….I do the ‘i’ before ‘e’ trick. Righty tighty…I use that one often. And if I ever need to spell the world encyclopedia (like just now) I sing it in my head like Jiminey (sp) Cricket did a long time ago.

I could never remember which Canadian province was which on the map till someone taught me BASMOQ: British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, Quebec. I guess I’m on my own for the Maritimes!

Randi’s last blog post..Truly Amazing It Is
Comment by Randi on July 8th, 2008 @ 10:16 amohmigosh! i’ve never even heard of these things!! any of ‘em!
well..i guess i knew the “L” on the hand thing…
I always do the hands together, palms facing thing to remember which months have how many days. Do you know what I am talking about? It’s kinda hard to explain on here…
Totally a Never Eat Shredded Wheat girl, although I do eat it A LOT!
Elaine’s last blog post..Our Very Own Super Hero
Comment by Elaine on July 8th, 2008 @ 10:52 amhaha and I thought I was the only one!!!
I use Never Eat Shredded Wheat, Lefty loosey, and I just think of what hand I write with and that is my right hand! hah The l’s look too funny when imagining them on your fingers!
One I use that wasn’t mentioned is for time zones (who cares right??) haha I use PMCEAN (pronounced P. M. CEAN) Pacific, Mountain, Central, Eastern, Atlantic, Newfoundland!
If anyone needs to know time zones:P hah
I use I before E a lot too.. but mostly because pple always ask how to spell my last name:P
hah Also the one you mentioned in a post a few weeks ago… hehe if its yellow let it mellow… if its brown flush it down:P
Ha! I use those too, though I hadn’t heard the one about hanging clothes to dry. I totally want a clothes line now! I have heard that some people want bylaws against them in the city…how backwards is that given the climate crisis we are in… it’s all about curb appeal…
But I am not bitter!
Kami’s last blog post..15 and counting
Comment by Kami on July 8th, 2008 @ 11:51 amI do righty tighty all the time. I also did “Every Good Boy Does Fine” to remember the lines on a staff of music for forever as a kid.
P.S.
I LOVE SUN DRIED LAUNDRY.
SIGH…
Loralee’s last blog post..Sideblog: BLOG NOSH MAGAZINE
Comment by Loralee on July 8th, 2008 @ 11:53 amI too don’t know right from left (everyone talks about “feeling” it. I do not feel it). And that L trick does not help me because when I look at them THEY BOTH LOOK LIKE Ls TO ME!!!!!
I don’t know what my problem is. I’m not even dyslexic.
Janssen’s last blog post..Lazy
Comment by Janssen on July 8th, 2008 @ 12:43 pmI’ve never had a problem with L & R, or with clockwise and anti-clockwise. But I used to struggle with NSEW … the saying down here is “Never Eat Soggy Weetbix” (which is a popular Kiwi breakfast cereal).
I’m a bit ashamed to admit that when I’m driving, I sometimes can’t remember the give way rules (which are admittedly slightly odd here in NZ) … but to avoid an accident, I have ONE intersection in my mind that I always think of, and compare wherever I am to that particular junction. For some reason I NEVER forget the give way rules at this intersection, so by using it as a reference point in my mind, I’m sweet at all the others!!
Now, not even my hubby knows I do that!!!
Hannah’s last blog post..WW: week 4
Comment by Hannah on July 8th, 2008 @ 1:41 pmI just taught my son the “righty tighty” one this weekend. Just sharing it with him made me realize all the things I’m in charge of teaching him!
Isabel’s last blog post..In which I present ?My Awkward Phase?
Comment by Isabel on July 8th, 2008 @ 2:57 pmI don’t play piano as much as I used to, but in order to sight read anything with sharps I’d remind myself that
Fat Cows Go Down And Eat Buttercups (FCGDAEB is the order of sharps in the key signature).
For flats:
BEADs at Grand Central, Fool (BEADGCF is the order of flats in the key signature).
Not helpful? Sorry. It’s the only one I can think of that I use.
Bart’s last blog post..Living in a Time of Opportunity: Plague or Blessing?
Comment by Bart on July 8th, 2008 @ 3:03 pmFor setting the table I was taught: “The cutlery had a fight; the knife and spoon were right, so the fork left.” (Dorky!)
And my favourite from my dad was:
“Always cut towards your chum,
Never cut towards your thumb,
You can always get another chum,
But you’ll never get another thumb!”
I’m a “never eat sour weenies” girl. Learned that from my 7th grade geography teacher - Mrs. Pannell….I do the righty tightie thing too. And the really sad thing for me is..I count on my fingers!!! It is really embarassing to see I suppose, so I usually try to conceal it when I do it.
Dana’s last blog post..Tuesday and a few July 4 Weekend Pics
Comment by Dana on July 8th, 2008 @ 4:17 pmI too am a “righty tighty lefty loosey” girl. I’m always using, “30 days hath September, April, June and November,” with the assumption that all the rest (except that dastardly February!) have 31.
Being a doc, mnemonics and other memory devices are ingrained in my brain. To remember the bones of the hand, it’s “Some Lovers Try Positions That They Can’t Handle.” The dirtier they are, the easier they are to remember. ![]()
Beth’s last blog post..Surviving Grady for President
Ah, glad to see mine isn’t posted yet.
I use lefty-loosey righty-tighty (looks like that backwards of most of the commenters).
I also do the “L” thing for left vs. right. I am 42 years old, and still have to stop and think about right or left.
When you’re looking at the moon, say the word “DOC” in your head to tell if its a Waxing or Waning moon.
D (waxing) on the way to O (full) or C (waning) on the other side of O (full). D O C. I love that one.
There are probably alot of others, but those are the ones that I can think of now.
monstergirlee’s last blog post..What is This Flower?
Comment by monstergirlee on July 8th, 2008 @ 7:35 pmi before e except after c, 2 Cs and 2 Ss and you’ll always have success, and never eat shredded wheat! I’m sure there’s more that don’t come to mind now…I know that I always set the table wrong b/c I like the fork on the right!
Comment by karen on July 8th, 2008 @ 8:36 pmI am a complete idiot about right/left. I always have to do a little pretend writing to see which is which.
slynnro’s last blog post..What is BUGGING me NOW.
Comment by slynnro on July 8th, 2008 @ 9:51 pmHa! I do those ones too (not the laundry one though), but I will never get that whole “30 days has September, June July and February??” you could put whatever months in there and it still sounds right to me?! It never helped.
I mostly use songs to help me remember things! my mom had songs for EVERYTHING!
30 Days Hath September, April June and November. All the rest have 31 except for February, which has 28 or sometimes 29.
I love that one!
monstergirlee’s last blog post..What is This Flower?
Comment by monstergirlee on July 8th, 2008 @ 10:13 pmlove that months one. i recite that oftan.
also, come the times for clock changes,
i always have to stop and think
“fall back, spring ahead”
and then try to work out what it means for my sleep.
it takes so much thought, figuring out if setting the clocks ahead gets me and extra hour or minus an hour.
I was just talking about “Never Eat Shredded Wheat” the other day. I hated when kids said “Never Eat Soggy Weiners”…It was just, so. very. wrong. I’ve used the others before, except I’ve never heard “Tops by their bottoms, and bottoms by their tops” before - but I like it!
Comment by Michele on July 9th, 2008 @ 12:16 amOMG I’ve never heard of anyone else doing the “pretend writing” for left and right before!!! I totally do that!
I always say “i before e”, “never eat shredded wheat”, and I count the mountains and valley’s of my knuckles instead of the “30 days hath September” to know whether a month has 30 vs 31 days.
joyce’s last blog post..Hudson’s Vocabulary
Comment by joyce on July 9th, 2008 @ 5:11 amI do the righty tighty/lefty loosey thing every morning in the shower too… and then I think of my friends daughter Lucy…
I know the great lakes (like Bethany Actually) but with HOMES (Huron, Ontario, Michigan, Erie, Superior).
I sometimes do the L thing with my hands but if I’m wearing a watch I just look for that- always on my left.
K’s last blog post..30 years
Comment by K on July 9th, 2008 @ 7:39 amUCLA: Uphill (on a) Curb, Left Always
When I took driver’s ed, I had heard from my friends that this was always a toughie on the test: remembering which way to turn your wheels when you park on a street.
I was nervous…but then my driving instructor taught me that handy dandy little acronym and it hasn’t failed me yet!
oh, and all the other ones you mentioned. I JUST said “righty tighty” this morning in the shower…
Comment by Karmyn on July 9th, 2008 @ 8:01 amI TOTALLY do the lefty loosey, righty tighty one. And same with directions, but I say Never Eat Soggy Waffles. Or Never Eat Sour Watermelon.

Kia’s last blog post..Little Man meets Occupational Therapy Head-On!
Comment by Kia on July 9th, 2008 @ 4:54 pmNo wonder I can seem to remember anything, I don’t use these sayings or any others. Maybe I should start.
Comment by gorillabuns on July 9th, 2008 @ 7:04 pmI know this isn’t your most current post, but I had to comment because I do that, too! I try to do a load of laundry every day and every day I recite “hang tops by their bottoms and bottoms by their tops” in my head as I hang them. Glad I’m not alone in this one!
Comment by Leah on July 10th, 2008 @ 8:05 amNever Eat Soggy Weiners. That’s how I do it! I also still get confused with rights and lefts ..
Mrs. Wilson’s last blog post..Old Dirty
Comment by Mrs. Wilson on July 12th, 2008 @ 5:36 pmNo SMRT sayings from me, but I have been wondering about the whole clothes line thing. Doesn’t the sun fade the colours of your clothes? I hung a black shirt on a drying rack and one sleeve was in the sun and has turned a slight aubergine colour, leaving the rest black. Grr.
Rachel Joy’s last blog post..Jack-in-the-box!
Comment by Rachel Joy on July 16th, 2008 @ 3:35 pm

I always say righty tighty, lefty loosey in the shower (and other places too). I’m also a Never Eat Shredded Wheat person too.
Thanks for the clothes pin tips!
