Dear Emily,
A month ago today, you came into the world and joined our family. Another blogger, who is infinitely more widely read than I will ever be, writes a monthly post to her daughter. I have always thought it to be a wonderful idea, and imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. For your brothers I have only done posts for their yearly birthdays, but I wasn’t blogging when they were new babies. Lucky for both you and I, I am now. Which means that I can document your progress and put copies in your baby book.
You have completely changed my world. Being a mom has always made me strive to be a better person. Now that I have you, my sweet baby girl, I am also striving to be a better girl. What do I mean by that?
I was never a “girly-girl.” I wasn’t a tomboy, but I wasn’t all frilly and dressed in pink either. For you, I have embraced pink, and purple and all shades of pastels. You may not like them when you are older, but I am open to being as girly as you want to be. To have tea parties and play with dolls. To wear dresses that swirl when you spin around, and cute little shoes to match. To go shopping together and giggle about boys. Sigh.
This month has flown by. We have had lots of company, and have just been getting into the groove of being a party of five.
You have a sweet temperament. You quietly looked around right after you were born. You don’t cry much at all. If I’m taking me sweet time getting to you when you are hungry, you let me know when it’s time to get down to business. Other than that, you don’t get your diapers in a knot over anything.
You’ve been having more awake time this week.
You look around with those big blue eyes and take everything in. You love to lay in the window seat and look out the window. It appears to be your favourite place to be, other than attached to my mammaries.
Graham loves it when I put you there (he always says, “Thank You Mommy!”) and he will sit next to you. He holds your hand and talks to you. He tells you that he loves you all of the time, and kisses you often. Nathan also loves you. He loves to kiss the top of your head and then stroke it. And you seem to love all of their attention.
You are a good eater. You love to eat and with that comes the end result. The power poop. We have had more than a handful of occasions where you let out so much poopy that it went up to your armpits. This morning was one of those occasions. Needless to say, we don’t bother with the wipes; we just strip you and give you a bath.
I have a couple of nicknames that I call you. One is “Super Pooper.” I don’t really call you this, but I sing it to the tune of ABBA’s “Super Trouper” every time I change your bum. I also call you my “sweet baby girl” and “Little Miss Emily.” There’s something about the name Emily that just screams for a “Miss” to be placed in front of it.
You’re starting to give me some longer stretches of sleep at night. Not a full night, of course, but longer than an hour. Mommy is very happy about this.
I also think you gave me your first smile the other day. You were awake and looking right at me. It hasn’t happened again, but I know it will. You are a beautiful baby girl and bring me joy beyond measure.
I love you,
Mommy

I feel a bit intrusive commenting, but that was beautiful and a great record for later Angella.

Beautiful letter. I only hope that I can do the same if/when I have children. I just hope this “blogging thing” last long enough.

Very very nicely written, Angella. what a sweetheart, she is. I have a little something for her that I wanted to give her this weekend… shucks. Hopefully soon… Maybe I’ll come and crash when Jen is in town?!

Very sweet, Ange! I am so glad you finally have a girl to have tea parties with, and also that we’ve all had girls so close together. What fun. I am sure there will be the occasional catfight, but what can ya do?

Already been a month. Time flies. What a great idea to that for Emily. She will appreciate it when she is older.
