Sunday was a day full of big white flakes falling from the sky, which was perfect to help us set the mood to decorate the tree(s).
I took a shot of Miss Emily rocking her new Robeez boots, dressed in her Sunday best.
After lunch, we put her in some comfy clothes, fired her into her crib, and hauled out the Christmas paraphernalia. Honey started with stringing the lights on the upstairs tree, and finished three hours later. Why did it take so long? I do not know the exact number, but I estimate that there are about eleventy billion lights on that thar tree.
Honey had two little helpers.
Their “helping” may have slowed things down a bit.
Graham asked us how old Jesus was going to be on His birthday. We said we did not know, exactly, and he said, “That’s OK. I’ll just ask him when I get to Heaven.”
OK then.
Amidst light stringing and theology discussions, I managed to do a bit of Christmas baking. Shortbread caramel squares are a hit whenever I make them. Shortbread. Caramel. Chocolate. What’s not to like?
I also made whipped shortbread.
A little taste of heaven.
Both recipes are from Karen. Yet another reason to love that girl.
Emily woke up and decided to “help” with the decorating as well. She took a particular liking to the stuffed snowman family.
We managed to get one tree complete before dinner, with plans to do the other one after dinner. Just as we were finished eating, a violent explosion of vomit lava burst forth from my baby girl’s insides. She was completely covered.
Matthew rushed her up to the bath and I cleaned her chair. I don’t know who had the better end of the deal. I think it was a tie.
She was happy, though, and no fever or anything. He moved on to the lights on the downstairs tree and the kids “helped” Daddy downstairs. I pulled out the tripod and took a few photos of the upstairs tree. I would like to take more of that tree and of the downstairs one now that it is complete, but here is a sample.
I think I’ll post the rest for Wordless Wednesday, once they have all been taken and edited. Sound like a good idea?
After the kids were in bed, I went back to making Christmas cards. YES, I make handmade cards. Because I have way too much time on my hands. Or I’m crazy. Or both.
Matthew and I were just drifting off to sleep when Nathan cried out. He had succumbed to the vomit lava as well. He got a bath and a new set of sheets. I tucked him in and kissed his cheek. As I was about to close the door, he told me he was going to be sick again. I scooped him up and we made it to the toilet just in time.
I decided to let him come and sleep with us, so I could be close if it happened again. It didn’t, thankfully, and a night of being smacked in the face and kicked in the ribs confirmed to me why we do not participate in the “family bed”.
So far, nobody else has barfed. I really hope I don’t get it. I had the nasty flu for my birthday last year and I still remember how awful it was. While it was a good way to lose those last ten pregnancy pounds, I am still at the after-barffest weight. I really don’t think I need to lose any more.
So there’s my disjointed weekend summary. How was your weekend? I really hope it did not include any vomit lava.

Those squares look heavenly… looks like I might buy myself some corn syrup so’s I can do some baking… in all my spare time between exams, yes.
Comment by Tricia on December 3rd, 2007 @ 1:08 pmI love Emily’s new boots!!!! and her dress is really cute too!
Comment by Robyn on December 3rd, 2007 @ 1:24 pmAmazing shots. Hope your kids get/stay healthy!!
Comment by Elizabeth on December 3rd, 2007 @ 1:31 pmCan I PLEASE catch that flu bug? I always seem to dodge it (hence the extra 5-10 lbs I keep hauling around). ![]()
Beautiful! And I feel for you with the flu going around. We just finished (I hope) our second bout with it, ugh!
Comment by familymclean on December 3rd, 2007 @ 1:41 pmIt seems sickness is abound. It is with us once again…
Poor Emily…sweet little girl…
Sorry about the vomiting bug! I hate those!!! I hope the bugs have well and truly left your place now.
But the Christmas tree looks nice. We put ours up on Saturday too.
I love the shortbread caramel squares! They are on my “to bake” list this year. And what’s Christmas without shortbread!
Comment by Jen on December 3rd, 2007 @ 2:33 pmI know this probably makes me sound really shallow and lame, but I kind of love the flu-bug weight loss. I had pneumonia this year, which really sucked … but I loved being skinny afterwards. Too bad it didn’t last. Hope your kiddies are feeling better.
PS - I loved your photos of the Diet Coke explosion. Did it freeze into a Diet Coke ice rink afterwards?
Oh no, we have (so far) escaped the barf-fest that is going around!
Beautiful pictures - dig the boys matching shirts!
Comment by Kami on December 3rd, 2007 @ 2:55 pmMy weekend included NO vomiting whatsoever, praise the Lord. We went to a birthday party and I got to sleep in, courtesy of my visiting mom. Not a bad weekend.
I hope that’s all the vomiting you guys see for a long while!
Comment by bethany actually on December 3rd, 2007 @ 3:00 pmNo vom, but plenty of snow and slush and ice. Now it has been raining in Seattle for about 48 hours and it doesn’t look to be stopping any time soon. Apparently they announced a state of emergency in Washington.
Love the tree! We are getting ours next weekend- that is if it dries out enough to bring one home.
Fur baby boots=love!
Comment by Kendrah on December 3rd, 2007 @ 3:28 pmNo vomit lava here, I’m sorry you had to deal with that. Hopefully nobody else is afflicted.
I love the story about Graham and asking Jesus his age in heaven. That’s sweet.
And Miss Emily’s boots are adorable!
Comment by Jill - GlossyVeneer on December 3rd, 2007 @ 5:32 pmIsn’t it odd, that here in Red Deer we have had many cases of Vomit Lava as well, good to know our world isn’t as big as it really seems!! Hope you guys are feeling better soon….
Always
Heidi
Yum; caramel and shortbread, together at last? Making that NOW. Hope Miss Emily is feeling better soon!!
Comment by metalia on December 3rd, 2007 @ 6:14 pmThat’s a great pic of Nathan. I hope ALL are feeling better. And HANDMADE? Wow. That’s all I can respond with.
Comment by She Likes Purple on December 3rd, 2007 @ 8:50 pmOH ANGELLA! Well, you know I’m right there with you. I did keep Kenny tucked in close - VERY close - with a green bowl.
I hope the lava has gone way without any fever or stomach pain.
Your trees are lovely.
Get some rest…you very well may need it. ![]()
Aww, your poor little kiddos, I hope that is the end of the barf and no one else gets it.
Oh and yes the “family bed” dose not work for me either, I get NO sleep!
NO vomit lava here…but we did put up our Christmas tree. With 2 little helpers. The third one was unfortunately not sleeping (as she has an aversion to sleep sometimes!) I LOVE the shots. I’m so jealous!
Comment by Lisa on December 3rd, 2007 @ 10:43 pmLove that dress! (And the boots!) I can’t wait to see the pictures of the trees, I bet they look lovely! For once, I actually started early on my Christmas cards this year…Now it’s just a matter of putting them all together!
Comment by Michele on December 4th, 2007 @ 12:39 amFirst, Emily looks quite divine in those little boots. Too cute.
Second, I’m stealing those recipes.
Third, I had a huge nasty flu that also made me lose 10 lbs in a week. The flu was horrible, the way my pants fit was awesome. It (the 10 lbs gone) lasted 2 days and then they were back. Stupid 10 lbs.
Comment by Mrs. Wilson on December 4th, 2007 @ 7:44 amPoor babies! It’s the worst when the don’t feel good.
I loooove making my own cards, but I’ve never mastered making envelopes. I’ve found template after template, but I’m apparently envelope retarted. So I have all these cute handmade cards, without envelopes, sitting in a drawer crying.
Comment by Kristie on December 4th, 2007 @ 8:46 am[...] people have already put their Christmas Trees up, like Anna and Angella. And Meg and her roommate had so much fun putting their’s up in November that they just had [...]

Gorgeous pictures!
I was snowed in for most of the weekend, but it was good. I also decorated, but on a much smaller scale. My place is pretty tiny, but I did my best. I love decorating for Christmas. Having some apple cider on the stove, blaring the Christmas tunes, and making my house look all festive is one of my favourite things to do during this season.
