I’m Not As Holey As I Was Last Week

Do you remember back in June when I posted about the nose piercing I got?  I went into great detail about how I had had it done three (Three!) times before and that the third time was a disaster.  A year of it getting infected and me battling it constantly.  Third time was apparently not the charm so I decided to try it a fourth time.  Because four is lucky?  Like a four-leaf clover or something?  WHO KNOWS.

The first few weeks were wonderful.  Nose Piercing and I were in the honeymoon period.  We took long walks together along the lake and gazed at each other lovingly (in the mirror).

Then apparently Nose Piercing got offended by something.  Maybe I didn’t listen enough or the infatuation butterflies wore off.  I am not sure, but that familiar swelling, complete with yellow pus (Like a BIG FAT ZIT) reared its ugly head.

I was cleaning in thrice daily with the proper cleaning solution and following all of the other instructions given.  The festering would calm down and I thought that maybe we had called a truce.  Until it happened again.  And again. And again.  It even happened the weekend of BlogHer.

“Hi!  I’m Angella!  The small planet on my nose says a big hello as well!”

Last Tuesday morning I woke up with that same swelling and oozing issue.  I debated in my head back and forth all day.  Do I keep fighting it and hope that it will eventually surrender?  My sister Dayna told me that hers took about a year to settle down.

Was I willing to walk around with a pulsating orb on the part of my body that greets the world on a daily basis?

Nope.  Honey agreed with me and I pulled it out.  Now it is a week later and the only thing left is the grey scar that was there after I had fought it for a year after the third (!) time.

My bad self

The low-resolution web photo makes the scar look almost non-existent.  Bonus!

(Upon opening this photo on my laptop my nose appears quite large.  Awesome.  I would shoot another one, but this one was the only self-portrait out of the fifty or so I took where I did not look stoned/constipated/OLD).

(Maybe the arm on the right can distract you from my nose.  Thanks to the distortion of the lens, I look like Popeye.  I have been eating more spinach lately.)

(Today is my last day of work.  I am phyically and emotionally exhausted.  I have to give mad props to Susan.  I tried out the eyeliner tip she posted on BlogHer to fake the wide awake look, and I instantly looked far more alert.  Looked is the operative word here.)

People may think I am vain for not wanting a weeping orifice on my face and they may very well be right.  I have enough insecurities; why constantly worry that people are offended/distracted/disgusted by my nose?

I think that I am finally learning to listen to my body.  A little. I did not listen to it yesterday when it told me to STOP EATING CHERRIES ALREADY.

Baby steps, people.  Baby steps.

  1. at least cherries are healthy … I was not listening last night when my body told me to stop eating pizza and ice cream and guacamole – in that order

  2. Yeah, I fought with mine for a while, but being 16 and “cool” for having a facial piercing got me through it.

If it happened again now, I would take it out…like I did with my belly button piercing. Infection+Indo+bucket showers=gross.

Also? Gotta love the Moran nose…although yours is not as big as mine :S

  4. At least it’s not as bad as this – one time, I had a PARTICULARLY large zit on my nose (not piercing-induced). I was so sensitive about it and could see it in my line-of-vision. My husband wanted to me to lighten up and “let it go,” so we went out to dinner. Got to the hostess-podium and he asked for a table for three.

You got it – me, him and the zit.

I laughed so hard – the hostess had no idea what was going on (thankfully).

  7. As cool as the nose piercing is/was, the inflammation and hassle is not worth it. Besides, your face does not need adornments. It’s pretty as is!

  11. Yup me too!

I had a nose ring for about two years and I LOVED it. But the little bubble infections came and went and finally I couldn’t take it anymore. I have vowed that as soon as I know there will be no more little hands to grab at it, I will try it again.

  15. That must be disappointing on the nose peircing but it sounds like the right thing to do. I don’t think removing it is vain…just sounds like common sense to me and less work for you. It’s basically win win.

I hear you on the exhausted…One more counseling session to go…hopefully this one will come prepared. Gotta love it when they show and and go, “what was this Q about again?”

  22. I have a huge gaping hole in my belly from when I took my piercing out–FIVE years ago. I wanted to get my nose pierced, but that experience alone (and the permanent scarring) made me think otherwise.

It might be caused by an allergy to Nickel. You may want to try to be pierced again using a Titanium or a Niobium stud.
