Nano, Nano (and Mac vs. PC)

Thanks for the questions, everyone! I’ll start working on my answers here soon, so check back in a week. Or five.

Yesterday was a busy day, filled with a billion pictures. Post to follow later, unless the virus that has attacked my children and husband finally breaks through my barrier of Vitamin C. For now, I’m just really tired. But that’s nothing new, now is it?

One set of photos from yesterday contains something I am very excited about. Matthew and I put all of our household purchases on Mastercard to collect Airmiles and then use them to purchase merchandise. Remember when we redeemed the Airmiles to get the boys quads for Christmas?

Do you also remember when I told you that I had downloaded itunes and you all gave me suggestions for music to download?

Well, I have been a downloading machine. I have been loving music again lately (something to listen to while I am editing photos) and it seemed only fitting that I use the Airmiles for something I could really use. I batted my eyelashes at Honey and he let me redeem the miles for this:

ipod nano

It’s so TINY!

Don’t believe me? I’ll show you a shot of it next to something to give it perspective.

It’s all about perspective

Hee!

(I didn’t watermark them, because really? Nobody is going to steal those photos. And this is supposed to be a quick post.)

The name “Nano” has me reminiscing. Did any of you guys have a Mork & Mindy lunch box like I did? Do you even remember the show? No? I guess it’s just further proof that I am an old fart.

The Nano is so cute! And wee. I may have to get one of those things that the kids these days are calling “skins”.

The arrival of my new toy has prompted a discussion between Matthew and I. You see, his work computer is about four years old and is SLOW. He would also like a laptop for more portability. I got my new laptop in June after I poured Diet Coke all over my old one.

Yes. Yes, I did.

We are a PC family. You have seen the Mac commercials right? Doesn’t the PC guy look like a stereotypical accountant? Us accountants use spreadsheets, Microsoft Word, Powerpoint, etcetera.

I am also into photography and this here site where I do my “writing”. Many of my online friends use Macs. It seems like it’s what all the cool kids are using.

Being “cool” is not the reason for me to get a Mac, but is it better somehow? Should I get a Mac and give my hubby my Dell laptop (with blasted Vista!)? I already can use Elements and Lightroom on this here PC. Are there special features that a Mac has that make photos even better? Or is it really all about the advertising?

I would appreciate your input. And feel free to give me more music suggestions. I have 4GB to fill up.

Yes, I had a Mork and Mindy lunchbox. And a Mork doll that came with an egg full of green slime. Not sure what the slime had to do with anything…

I say go with a Mac, they are far less buggy.

The last laptop I bought was a PC and I have an apple sticker covering the Compaq logo. But I would have gone with a mac instead.

I have both a PC and a MAC. Both seem to have god features. I am not completely sold on a MAC. Won’t do things like…let me watch TV on abc.com :( I am a huge right clicker…can’t do that either. It is good for making videos (if you have the DVD burner capabilities). I find it easier to edit my pics on a PC. I have lots more pro/cons when/if you make a decision!

I have a PC laptop and a Mac desktop (and a Mac at work too). I tend to use whichever computer has the software I need. I will say, though, that I HATE iPhoto and that while it’s nice to have a computer will built-in iMovie and iDVD, the folks at Apple seem to have worked so hard to make them lowest-common-denominator-friendly that it’s sometimes hard to get the programs to do what I want them to because I have more specific needs than a lot of casual or novice users.

If your laptop is working for you why would you switch? No sence wasting money on something. Save it for a new lens!

I hear ya on the lens! And a flash, and, and, and…Matthew needs a laptop, though, so I’m wondering if I should give him mine and get a Mac. :)

We just bought a new HP laptop for about a quarter the cost of a Mac, but I am wishing now we’d splurged, because this stupid Vista won’t let me into my Flickr account! I can see Flickr photos, can log into all my other online accounts, but when I try to log into Flickr, it just loads indefinitely. Not very fun.

Ahem! Anyway. Yay for your new iPod! Maybe I should finally break down and get one. And I knew immediately what the title of this post was referring to. ;-)

Robin and I just recently did all the research related to mac vs pc. Now we are DREEAMING of getting the new 24″ iMac. It is SWEET! For pictures it’s so awesome!
They have loads of info on their site. You can watch a 20 minute clip about it. GET THE MAC. We want to switch all our music/cupmuter stuff over to mac stuff. It just makes sense.
I was looking into getting a mac book but found out that it can’t run quickbooks (in Canada. tax reasons) and that was what I was wanting to do with it. So good luck. I saw once you go mac you’ll never go back.

say NOT saw! Sorry!

I just got a new computer and love it….I’m a PC girl. Having a father who works on computers for a living, he wouldn’t let me get anything else. Best of luck…..

I have a PC Desktop (or 2), an HP notebook and a Macbook Pro. I love my Macbook, it’s a wonderful machine. My hubby (the accountant) uses an HP laptop all the time. All of our computers are work issued though except for one of the PC desktops (a Dell, because those are really good deals!).

I love your iPod! I have an old black 2GB Nano. It’s getting pretty crusty through all my marathon training though, so maybe if I complete the marathon I will have earned myself a new one, huh? ;-)

Yay for getting an iPod! I have a black Nano and I have a HOT PINK “skin” for it. Ultra groovy, baby! I’ve got another skin (a black one) but I prefer the pink ;-)

Ooooohhhh. I want a pink one!

Comment by Hannah on October 24th, 2007 @ 3:18 pm

I have the SAME 2GB Silver Nano;) I love mine so much!! It is very teeny tiny, and cute.

We are PC people all the way, both systems we have. I don’t want to be like one of the cool kids;) I’m very happy with my HP laptop.

Comment by Randi on October 24th, 2007 @ 3:21 pm

I meant to add, that we’ve had it a year and Landon spilled coffee all over it and we’ve still had ZERO problems with it. Just sayin;)

Having been “victimized” by a new Dell Laptop with Vista last February I would say anything has got to be better. After talking to the IT guys at work about my Vista woes I was told I should have bought the office version not the home version, too late now. I hear the Macs are much better for pictures, editing etc. Get a skin for your IPod cuz they scratch really easily and my boys have some gizmo to plug it into the car stereo, really neat. As for music suggestions go Canadian…Michael Buble.

Oh! I LOVE Michael Buble. He rocks. :)

Comment by Anne Marie on October 24th, 2007 @ 4:15 pm

MAC SUCKS! and…no, wait…that about covers it :)

Comment by daybe on October 24th, 2007 @ 4:59 pm

I honestly don’t know. Seeing as I’ve never used a Mac. Alls I know is our computer is ready for the dumpster! So, YOU get a Mac and tell me if it’s awesome or lame. You take the risk, I’ll reap the benefits!

Comment by christy on October 24th, 2007 @ 5:12 pm

Well, I don’t have much advice in the computer department but I will however suggest downloading some Mark Schultz. He seems to be my favourite these days!

Comment by Michele on October 24th, 2007 @ 5:36 pm

I’m totally going to steal that Diet Coke vs. Nano picture and hawk it as an original. Although I’m sure I’ll have some trouble explaining the Diet Coke = my thighs. (I haven’t thought this through.)

I am BEGGING for a new laptop for Christmas. I want a pretty one, which Mike says isn’t an actual feature, so I need to do some research. Thanks for the inadvertent help!

Comment by Jennie on October 24th, 2007 @ 6:20 pm

Okay…so I had not checked your site and my good friend (who also reads occasionally) beeps up on IM to tell me to go read your blog. Sure enough, my heart skipped a beat. Mac’s do that to me…. They are trusty, never freeze up and act all wacked like the piece of HP junk I am on now. I personally LOVE their programs, easy functions, ect ect…Just buy a Mac- okay. You will know why when you do. And uber cool Ipod. We plug ours into the stereo in our car and the kids listen to podcast stories. We made it all the way from Switzerland to Amsterdam with no more than ten words out of all four. Pure Bliss…..

My hubs will NEVER allow me to own a Mac. For one, he HATES them (Even thought they are so pretty! Sob!) and another is that he wouldn’t know how to fix it if it were to break.

So…No Mac for me. :(

Comment by Loralee on October 24th, 2007 @ 7:50 pm

I have the same Nano, er I mean, Jay does. I got it for him for Christmas. Turns out I use it way more than he does. Nice wife eh?

I am a Dell girl but then again, I am also an accountant. Seems fitting doesn’t it! Good luck with your decision.

Comment by Kami on October 24th, 2007 @ 7:50 pm

I have had the cute little MacBook with pink keyboard cover for just over a year now. I love it! It never gives me problems like my old dell did or my classmates who have mini breakdowns in Technology class when their computers freeze and they can’t keep up with instruction - haha suckers! I have no had a lot of time to use the extra features on pictures, however I’m sure they are cool. I have used a few - but the photobooth with built-in camera is pretty fun to play with and take silly pictures that are distorted - I’m sure you’ve seen some.
I think the best word I can used to describe the mac, inside and out, is clean. It’s just so smooth and so trustworthy. And if something does come up that it’s not happy about, it tells you in such a nice pretty manner, no frighteneing sound or ugly box with a red ‘x’ - it is just great! Wish I could have told you about the more technical side, but it’s better than nothing :) Feel free to email me if you have anything I can help you with when making your choice :)

Comment by Tracy on October 24th, 2007 @ 8:39 pm

Um, get a Mac. You can have all the good things about Mac, all the good things about PC (I think there are a few), and none of the PROBLEMS about PC. And Mac doesn’t have any problems. And no one bothers to create viruses for Mac. And I would never put you in the same accountant box as that nerdy PC guy. :)

Comment by Rachel on October 24th, 2007 @ 10:02 pm

Our son just got a Mac for university this fall, and it is so great! Very user friendly and cool to operate. He bought his online and was offered a free Nano as a gift with purchase. He already had one, so he gave the new one to me! Too bad they only give those great deals to students!

Comment by Heidi F on October 25th, 2007 @ 9:23 am

Interesting comments….but it sounds like the decision is split. Basically, I bet there are pros and cons to both. I’ve only used PCs and not a MAC - I ddin’t know the differences either. I do know some days I LOVE my Dell computer and sometimes I want to travel to India to personally STRANGLE the Dell service reps!!! So….I don’t know what to tell ya in that regard.

I have that IPOD and I love it!!! I take it to the gym with me or walking. I haven’t downloaded anything from the internet to it yet though…I’ve only downloaded from CDs I already have. Michael Schultze is a great suggestion. Love his music! I love the Hairspray soundtrack too!!!

Comment by Dana on October 25th, 2007 @ 2:19 pm

OH, I forgot to say I remember the Mork and Mindy Lunch box…I had an Evil Knievel one. How funny is that? Of course YOU may be too young to remember that.

Comment by Dana on October 25th, 2007 @ 2:25 pm

I bought the Toshiba laptop (with Vista, which I LOVE) and it performs really well. I would now prefer to have gotten a Macbook. It’s more of a creative platform than a work one.

Comment by Shannon on October 25th, 2007 @ 6:13 pm

Apple, Apple, Apple. All the way - I might be a little swayed by Darron. We have no bugs. I mean, computer bugs.

Comment by Kristin on October 25th, 2007 @ 9:14 pm

OK, you have to get a mac! ive had mine for a year (macbook pro) and it has NEVER crashed, ever, its easy to use, clean and fun. I can get you some tech info if you need it. but also, if you want to run windows, you can. I did the “bootcamp” so basically I split the hard drive, all i have to do is switch back and forth if I want to be on Windows (which i have to, to work) and bootcamp is extremely easy to do yourself, hell I did and i cant do chit LOL. the mac is pretty too, very, and when your on the mac side if u do the bootcamp, even your keyboard lights up, too cool! i was in the apple store the other day and could not believe that size of the screens for their desktops, they were HUGE! everyone that i have ever known taht got a mac, has loved it. also, ive had the windows side of my computer get infected twice by a trojan, and crash once since i have had it in a year, the mac side, was completely fine, and the computer dude that fixed it, said.. yano you should stay on the mac side of that thing LOL. also you can upgrade your mac for free.. not like when you have xp and have to go buy vista. the apple store will do this for you. apple also has wonderful tech support if you need it. the built in webcam is awesome as well. now if you decide on a pc, i have to rec. the new acer.. its going to cost you as much as a mac, but well worth it, comes with the built in cam, and 1gb as well. hit me up if ya have any ?’s
