My Canadian “Accent”

Beach Bum

Do you remember how I asked for words to say with my Canadian “accent”? It seemed like a fun idea at the time but I spent the next few days wondering what I had gotten myself into. I mean, I’m apparently a “hand talker” and I have seen myself via that lovely picture-in-picture feature on Skype. WHAT WAS I THINKING?

However. I’m one who follows through on things, so I knew that I’d have to do it. I contemplated filming it with the kids around so as to distract you with their cuteness. Knowing my kids (and myself) all too well, I realized that would be a recipe for disaster. They’d test my patience and then there would be video footage of me being Mommy Of The Year as I lost my temper.

I had a wedding shoot on Sunday afternoon (photos to follow…some day) and in order to let me get ready for it, Matthew took the kids to church and left me at home. Once all of my gear was ready and packed, I sat down to make the stupid video. It took me five tries because my point-and-shoot only takes one-minute-long clips.

ANYWAY, here it is.

My Canadian Accent from Angella on Vimeo.

See? No accent. I may talk a mile a minute and sound like I sucked on helium before recording it, but I do not have an accent.

Be gentle.

*Photo at the top is from the 7 Days Flickr pool that I joined, thanks to Bethany. I’m hoping that I can keep it fun, and maybe a little creative.

You sound exactly like I remember. :-) You didn’t say Graham, though!

You sound LOVELY. I don’t hear any accent, but then I think that we sound the same, eh?

Comment by Patti on July 12th, 2009 @ 9:04 pm

THAT IS AWESOME!!! To me, you do not have an accent. At all. You sound normal to me.

I’m sad that I’m NOT going to see you next week :(

When Americans say ‘about’, their mouths open quite widely, it really does sound different when we Canucks say it.

So pretty much you’re the cutest. And you totally have an accent. As you should! I’ve been told on numerous occasions that I sound like I’m from Ohio, North Dakota/Anywhere In The Midwest, Really.

You are so cute — and I think you have a little bit of an accent, but I live in Nebraska and I’m pretty sure you would laugh so hard you cried if you listened to some of the people in my husband’s family. :)

Comment by JenniferB on July 12th, 2009 @ 10:48 pm

That was fun to watch! I say whatevs to having an accent. People tell me all the time that I have that ever so wonderful Chicago accent but I don’t think so! It’s not a pretty accent, so it’s not one I’m gonna own up too. Now, a British accent would be a different story!

Comment by Melissa on July 12th, 2009 @ 11:02 pm

Awww, you are SO cute! I love your accent (and yes, you totally have one, ha!) and that first picture of you is HAWT!

Oh man … now I want to meet you even MORE than I did before! You sound so young, and cool, and fun, and lovely. And of course, to me, you DO have an accent. But so do all Canadians AND Americans! Although I guess you guys would say *I* was the one with the accent, LOL! When I stayed with my friend Jenn in Toronto she kept saying how much she loved hearing me talk. So funny! :-)

I had a prof from UBC and he spoke kinda nasally and said, “Um” a lot and “Right” a lot… and usually “right” was in the form of a question, right?

I never realised how much of an accent BC had as opposed to someone from ontario… but, you’d have more of an ontario accent than a BC one, right?

angella Reply:

I cannot believe how many times I said “um” and I use “right?” ALL THE TIME. Usually in this manner:

“I know, right?”

All of my aunts/uncles/cousins are in Ontario and I always tease them that they have an American accent ;)

I’m going to have to check this out at home later as my work computer won’t play the video…
BUT!! I wanted to let you know that I just ordered a Canon Rebel and I am (im)patiently waiting for it to arrive in the mail. I’m going to have to peruse your archives of Foto Friday to learn how to use the manual settings now! ;) I can’t wait!

angella Reply:

Oh, Yay! Let me know if you have any questions :)

Damn!!! I’m at work so I can’t see this until tonight. I can’t wait. I love me a Canadian accent!

I hear an accent, but it’s a good one. It’s a delicate Canandian accent…totally not like a hockey-player.

angella Reply:

Not only do I not *talk* like a hockey player, I have all of my teeth. Double bonus.

Comment by Momo Fali on July 13th, 2009 @ 7:15 am

First of all – YEAH you for posting it!
I don’t hear it either – then again I’m Canadian too. Funny how the only “real” accents we have are the French and Newfoundland ones, but depending on where you go in the States there are so many different accents!
I love that you included about. I was teased endlessly by some Midwesterns two summers ago for how I say it. What was better was how they tried to imitate it. :)

Angella, What do you say after the stuff about taco? I have replayed it over and over and can’t quite get it. I have gone to loud concerts. :)

I just said that I know how to pronounce it, because I *like* tacos ;)

That is great! You don’t have as thick of a accent as my friends in Calgary do. But it’s still there and I love it.

Comment by kakaty on July 13th, 2009 @ 2:18 pm

I’m sorry but you DO have an accent. I love it, though! I always think Californians (such as myself) don’t have accents, but have been told otherwise by many others!

To an Aussie’s ear you certainly do have a Canadian accent, so much so that I couldn’t quite understand what you were saying but there again that could be the distortion of my computer :-) or were some of the words you used brand names?
My uneducated ear finds it little different to a soft American accent but I guess you’d find my Aussie accent hard to distinguish from a Kiwi accent.

Angella-

I have to say that I LOVED the video clip. But not for the reason you did it. I’m a long time reader (though infrequent commenter) and your video just brought you to life for me.

Kerri Anne has told me how fantastic you are AND promised to introduce you to me at BlogHer. Which is next week. :)

Comment by Chris on July 13th, 2009 @ 8:49 pm

That video was excellent. You are very cute and I agree with the commenter above that the video really brought you to life.

Also, my camera came in the mail today!! I think I’m going to take the dog for a walk and see if she’ll let me play around with it a little…. squeee!! :) :):)

I love ya, girl, but you have a Canadian accent.:) Which is halfway to a Minnesotan accent, but less dippy. :)

[...] Or so I have been told. I also use different words than my American friends do. I often refer to the bathroom as a washroom. I refer to Diet Coke as “pop” not “soda.” In my house we have breakfast, lunch and dinner/supper. Lunch is NEVER referred to as “dinner.” That makes no sense to me. [...]
