Murphy’s Law, Revisited

Date: Monday June 23, 2008
Posted in: Blogging, Photography, Sundry, Workin' It, me

I have had a number of really varied and unique opportunities fall into my lap lately due to this here website.  Some I have mentioned and some I haven’t.  Yet.

I really am in awe that people are interested in working with me.  I am quite thankful to be given the chance to do thing that I love such as writing and photography, and even get paid for it.  It does not even feel like I am working.

A few weeks ago I was exchanging emails with a blogging friend of mine who has had some sweet opportunities come her way in the past few months.  I was expressing my glee for all that is happening to her, and she replied with something that echoed how I often feel.  She was worried that maybe she was talking too much about all that was going on, and did not want to come across as bragging.

I told her that we all love her and are truly happy for her.  There will always be a few haters who are so miserable in their own lives that they get bitter and mean when good things happen to others.  I told her that the rest of us are content in our own lives.  We are secure enough in our own happiness to be truly joyous when great things are happening to people that we consider to be friends.

I have been struggling a little bit with those same feelings that she had.  I do not want to come across as a braggart.  I am just flattered and awestruck and MAYBE A LITTLE EXCITED.  Not that I get excited very often.

Heh.

I am also the type of person that just spews anything and everything about herself with wild abandon.  I keep no secrets.  Unless they are yours.  I am an awesome secret-keeper for others.

My plan is to just keep on being me.  To share what is going on when the time is right and to try to also convey how thankful I really am.

My only concern is that blasted Murphy’s Law.  I thought I would address it, to make sure I don’t shoot myself in the foot.

Dear Murphy,

My life is horrible.  Nothing is going right.  I have no job, my camera died, and I cannot string coherent sentences together.  I’m going to pack it all in and drown my sorrows in Diet Coke.

Take that, Murphy!

In wedding news from yesterday, I would like to channel a different Murphy.  Mary Murphy from SYTYCD, to be precise.  My thoughts on the wedding?

THAT. WAS. AMAZING!  WOOOOOOOOOOOO!

I might even have a chance at the hot tamale train. Heh.

The day was absolutely PERFECT.

I had my friend Karen come with me to be my sidekick.  Honey prayed for us before we left and I felt a peace wash over me.

The weather consisted of sunny, and warm, with white puffy clouds that covered the sun at the perfect times.  I could not have asked for more spectacular weather.  I was just praying for it not to rain.  God one-upped me, it appears.

Having Karen with me was a lot of fun.  I was up in everyone’s face with one camera, while she stood back with the zoom lens and popped off candid shot.  I am so very thankful that she was able to come with me.  It was a great way to start off my wedding career.

I worried a bit if having her there would make me feel like I could not do it alone for the next couple of gigs that I have lined up, but if anything it made me more at ease.  There were a few lulls in the “activities” where I was also free to wander at large and get a lot of candid shots.  I loved having her as my sidekick, but I also now know that I will be more than fine on my own.

The couple that got married have an amazing story, but it is not mine to tell.  It started in a foreign country, and involves political unrest, international barriers, and a lot of red tape.  Love prevailed, however.  Yesterday the two became one.

I felt like I had the best job on the planet.  Weddings are one of the happiest days of a person’s life.  I was swathed in their happiness, and to was privileged to capture snippets of it for them.  It. Was. Amazing.  I think I’m still on a bit of a high.

I cannot WAIT for my next wedding shoot.

I also cannot wait to talk about the other things going on behind the scenes over here.  Stay tuned!

I wish our wedding was ahead of us so I could fly you there and have you photograph it.

Also, you’re right, those that love and care for us (in action, not just in words) will always be happy for our good news. They’ll always take joy in our joys. Those that don’t aren’t worth our time.

Yaaaaaayyyy!! Brag away. I’m so happy for you. Looks like you had the same weather as we did. I was in the garden yesterday hoping the shoot was going well for you. I’m thrilled to hear it was.

And forget about Murphy. Just kick him in the shins if he tries to spoil your fun. Thanks for getting my Monday off to a great start.

More pictures!!

I love weddings - I am such a cheeseball but that would be amazing to be able to share in special days like that!
And good for you on your accomplishments. I can’t stand when people are haters about other people’s accomplishments. I love your blog - keep writing and bragging please!

i totally know what you mean. of course. twins.

but, yeah, i’m all for people who get opportunities from their blogs. and for them to get excited about it!!! it’s proof that we aren’t just a bunch of silly geeks wasting time on the internet.

Comment by ali on June 23rd, 2008 @ 11:24 am

I really know what you mean about the “bragging”. I have also been very excited to announce some things, and have needed to write at length about others to promote my book. But sometimes I feel uncomfortable about that - for the same reasons you mention.

Now I’m taking a break from all of that and getting back to my normal stuff. And it feels great!

I’m happy to have found your blog through the BlogHer rotation. Great stuff!

So glad to hear the wedding went well! I love stories like that couple - I have several friends who have/are going thru similar things in their life stories, and when they can finally pass thru all the barriers and get married, it’s the coolest thing ever.

Can’t wait to hear the rest of your good news! :)

I have to give you an AMEN SISTA! for the first part of your blog. It’s YOUR site. YOU are excited. Write away. If people have a problem with it, well, they’re trolls so that’s their problem. Ha!

I echo Hannah because she is so eloquent. You deserve it all and I have never felt like you were bragging. You have every right to be excited about all the opportunities you have and we, you faithful readers and friends, couldn’t be happier for you.

And also?

CAN’T WAIT TO HEAR WHAT ELSE YOU HAVE UP YOUR SLEEVE!

Sorry for yelling but I am just excited for you :-) And to see the wedding pics, I bet they are fantastic!

I love it when bloggers post when they have success. Besides, we link to other people’s projects, articles, blah, blah, blah, it only makes sense to inform people who read your blog of success you have, right? Sure there are times I am envious, but that certainly doesn’t mean I would wish them to not have the experience. I just wish I could come along for the ride, too!

I think you deserve every single good thing. (Plus a case load or four of Diet Coke!)

I come here to read about you being excited, and don’t think you’re bragging at all. If anything, you’re actually writing about happy things to cheer me up. IT’S ALL ABOUT ME…
Hehehehe
You’re not a braggart at all!
Hurray for the wedding being awesome!!! Good job!

I’ve been thinking of developing a book for my brother of his wedding. Have you heard of this site before? http://www.blurb.com
You can actually have all of those photos put into a pre-formatted book… you can order one book at a time. i haven’t done it yet myself but - a guy at work had one done of his vacation pics and OMG, the table book looks AMAZING and it’s professionally done.

Maybe in the future, you can offer it as part of your “package” or - as an extra. You can take quotes, stories, etc. and place it around the photos, etc…. I bet yours would look stunning once you edit your pics and such :)

Just an idea!

And MEGA congratulations on any and all other wonderful things coming your way!

I agree, that darn Murphy’s Law - Why does it have to ruin everything, anyways?

You’re definately not a bragger, I have never thought that. And besides, who cares what the “downers” think…It’s your blog and we want to hear about you and your kids!!!

I’m so happy to hear that the wedding shoot went well! Now you can relax a little about the next photography gig! I can’t wait to see the pictures on your website and I’d love to hear the love story, now that you’ve said it’s a good one!
