Little Miss Me

Posted in: Emily, Uncategorized, me

This week’s theme seems to be about the sappy.  I posted about Nathan turning four.  I then posted about Graham and his sweetheart Sarah, and how they are growing far too quickly.  I thought that the only fair way to treat my children (I am ALWAYS trying to be fair.  Futile, likely, but I’m trying) would be to do a post about Miss Emily.

While laying awake in the middle of the night as I am prone to do, I drafted a Post Of Epic Proportions in my head.  It involved discussion of how much she looks like me, of how she has my nose and smile, of how I feel like I am watching myself thirty years ago.  I would ponder as to whether she is as kooky as I was (according to my mom) and if we possibly had similar personalities.

I would likely weep while writing it, and my readers might get a little misty from all of the heart tugging.

I went downstairs to pull out the two tiny albums I have that chronicle the first five years of my life.  Another album caught my eye and I soon realized that I had a third album with photos that were beyond awesome.  While the kids watched TV performed complex mathematical equations, I scanned some photos.

Let me introduce you to me, thirty years ago.

Hmmm…that smile looks awfully familiar.

Here I am being classy:

The legal age for drinking is lower in Canada than it is in the States, but it is not that low.  Don’t even ask about the cigarette. I sure haven’t.

Working the bikini like Miss Emily does.

Also rocking the tree-stump thighs like she does.

Dear Emily: I am sorry that you got my thighs. Love, Mommy.

Feeling blinded by the Mommarazzi, I am guessing.

I have seen this expression before…

I’d be throwing “The Look” if I had a zoom lens in my face too.

Let’s get back to me in the seventies.

WHAT IS THE DEAL WITH THAT DRESS?

Speaking of dresses, what about this one?

The photo is blurry, but you get the idea.  I feel like I should yodel while looking at that photo.

There is an outfit that appears in approximately eighty percent of my photos.

One more for good measure.

Dear Polyester: The Seventies would not have been the same without you.

There are pages and pages of photos that I forgot even existed.  While browsing through them I can see a definite resemblance to my baby girl.  I also think that she and I might possibly share a similarly unique and kooky personality.

Can you see it too?

I can defnitely see the resemblence - not only in physical looks, but facial expressions & poses (which indicates that her personality probably IS similar to yours as a child). Lucky you, having a Mini Me! :-)

P.S. There are worse thighs Emily could have inherited. Like mine.

She’s you with just a tad bit less hair that’s blonde (umm…and maybe better sense than to let her mother dress her in polyester, ha)! Will she get your curls, too, in time, you think?

I did not get curly hair until puberty! TMI? Maybe. The same goes for Matthew too.

We just had frizzy hair until the hormones kicked in, but now have more curl than we know what to do with…

Sweet post! Emily definately looks like you! In fact, when you show pics from when you were younger, I see all three of your kids! (Funny because I thought they looked like their Daddy!) Hope you were a good little girl, cause you might just get a taste of your own medicine!

Comment by Michele on August 27th, 2008 @ 10:00 pm

She looks like you for sure!
Isn’t it a odd feeling when you look at your child and it feels like you are looking at yourself, that happens to me once in a while with Marin.

Comment by Kristin on August 27th, 2008 @ 10:13 pm

I think that in the first few pictures I see a LOT of Graham (not that you were masculine, or he feminine) But I saw it a lot (based entirely on pictures since I have never seen either in person!)…
But the last few I see some resemblance of Emily for sure!
Must be amazing having little beings with little pieces of you!!!

Comment by Megan on August 27th, 2008 @ 10:16 pm

yep- I see Graham too- especially with that big cute smile.

Now that you have shown us your baby pics I can see the likeness, altho she has her daddy’s eyes based on the photo of him you showed a bit back.

So glad that I just missed that part of the 70s clothing. Either that or my parents were too cheap to let me be cool.

I totally see Graham too although there is definitely a resemblence with Emily as well.
I have a niece who looks strikingly like me. I guess that makes perfect sense since everyone says I look just like my brother.

Hey … I must agree with a few other commenters (sp?) ~ I definitely see Emily … but a lot of Graham too! Nathan, on the other hand, looks like his Daddy!

I THINK we’re about the same age ~ so I could definitely show you a few outfits of mine that you would be jealous of! :)

Comment by Lisa C. on August 28th, 2008 @ 5:31 am

I see a resemblance, for sure! But I also see so much of you in Graham too… moreso in the big toothy grin shots :) And the first picture of Emily, something about her eyes or her cheeks looks like Nathan. I haven’t noticed that before.

Those pictures are outstanding! Your “attitude” in the bikini shot? “Yeah, I’m doing yard work while wearing a two-piece. SO WHAT?”

I always think your kids look like Matthew … until I see pictures of you. Graham & Emily definitely take after their momma.

Ok, she has your hubby’s face (and hair?) from the eyes on up, but she all you in the nose, cheeks, mouth and chin. What an adorable combination! You are so awesome at capturing her personality in your photos. Love them!

I’m your age and I have photos of me in little Swedish/German-inspired frocks as well. What a strange fad that was. I did not, though, have the full leisure suit ensemble. I’m thinking your mom was much hipper…

Ok. Just to make sure you look a lot alike I am gonna need a picture of Emily with a beer bottle and a smoke. K?

Oh just kidding. I always thought she looked like your husband after I saw a pic of him but yeah, she’s got your features too! Gotta love what our parents dressed us in. Surely our kids won’t be as scarred…

She is her Momma’s girl, full of sweetness and sass that can’t help but be loved!

And that suit? My cousin had a similiar one that she wore in about 90% of her pictures. It must have been ’70’s haute couture…

And my hair never had curl until puberty either… I thought I was the only one ;-)

I love those old pictures! So 70’s. so… yuk, I lived it too.

Yes I see a resemblance between you and Emily, but I think I see more resemblance between the way you look now than your 5 yr old self. Odd how that is. You’re both so cute!

She is definitely a mini you! By the way, in the pic of you with the “yodel” dress, we had the same couch!! Gotta love the seventies!!

Comment by Kelle on August 28th, 2008 @ 10:35 am

Hmmm, curly hair that only appeared after puberty? Must have been the body’s way of making sure the curtains matched the drapes. AUGH! Can’t believe I just wrote that!!!
But yes, I see so much of Emily in you. :)

Comment by Jennie on August 28th, 2008 @ 6:17 pm

You guys are all awesome!

When we had Graham, all I heard was how much he looked like his Daddy.

I saw it, yes, but I also saw ME.

I got tired of explaining that he looked like my baby photos. Nobody cared.

Then we had Nathan, and there was no argument. HE IS HIS DADDY.

Emily is a good mix of us, but according to my Mom, she has my personality too.

I am not sure if I should be happy about this, or afraid.

Comment by angella on August 28th, 2008 @ 9:35 pm

Aww - you should be happy! Emily will be so glad to be just like you someday, I’m quite sure.

I had those “thunder thighs” when I was a baby also. Eliza is following right in my footsteps… At least I got one out of the three. I was thinking that I got royally jipped in the whole homebirth times three affair ;)

DUDE you were doing polyester pantsuits before Hilary Clinton! That shirt is the shizzit though.

My girl also got my thighs and my smile. With smiles like that I can only hope that people look up instead of down.

Comment by Nadine/Scarbiedoll on August 29th, 2008 @ 11:45 am

I can’t get over how “twinsy” you look! But if I hadn’t seen your baby photos, I don’t know if I would have picked it out right away. It’s crazy!

Comment by The Over-Thinker on August 29th, 2008 @ 5:06 pm

Wow … she totally looks like you when you were little (minus the hair). Love the outfits … hot stuff!

Comment by Red Lotus Mama on August 30th, 2008 @ 9:27 pm

Hey dutchblitz, long time no seek and I’m an occassional reader of your blog. Not only your pics of the current day are nice, so is yesterday. I bet those childhood photos bring back good memories…and the funniest is you have a brown bottle. Nowadays, all those angry anti-obesity activists don’t like the coke and 7up baby bottles. :-/ As a person of Flemish-French descent (I’m the man who said his father is from French Flanders or the Nord/Pas-de-Calais region), I knew about how toddlers are introduced to wine and spirits in a young age, my Dad explained this to me on his parents gave him a tiny fraction of liquor into water or juice. Maybe that’s his family, but I doubt any parent would expose their kids to alcohol in an early age. I’m an American from the left coast (southern Cal.) with all the P-C ness and neo-cons alike telling 18 year olds they can go overseas to fight in wars, but can’t enter a bar. Sorry for the off topic message, but I’m glad you share pics of yourself, husband, the family (can’t believe the kids are growing up fast) and your home. I hope your summer was fantastic in where else…Canada. +

Comment by Michael on August 31st, 2008 @ 4:31 am

Hey there, Wow the beer bottle picks must be a family thing, lol. I know I have seen baby me with one too. As for the wonderful leasure suit, I hate to break the news to you but one of the only pics I have of us as tots your in that suit too, lol.

Comment by cousin Teresa from Ontario on August 31st, 2008 @ 8:27 pm

I must say, as a new member your blog caught my attention first. I have a mini-me also. And now she is almost 20, and I was 22 when I had her; full-circle almost. Not only have I gotten a taste of my own medicine by watching what my own mother went through; but also a new a wonderful outlook on life. To live is to learn, and to learn is to change. M daughter changed me by learning through her life. Feel blessed, because you are. And I am sure your mother had you in that dress for a reason!:0)
