I Need Help

My siblings are all laughing at the title because they have been telling me that I need help for years.

All I have on my mind lately is how busy I am.  It is the same thing I have posted a million times before.  I am in the last two weeks of a teaching contract.  There are assignments to mark, emails to answer, reports to be written. Then there is that little thing called LIFE.

You know. My husband, my children, my friends, my other commitments.

The reason I am reaching the boiling point this time is because it is DECEMBER.  While I love Christmas, and Baby Jesus, and the Christmas carols, and ALL THAT JAZZ…December is BUSY.

Not a day goes by that I do not get a phone call/email/Facebook invite for some event that we are required to attend.

My daytimer looks like the Holiday Event Fairy threw up all over it.

I am completely and utterly behind in all things Internet.  This is making me feel like even more of a failure than I normally do.  I often get comments from people who wonder how I do all that I do.  There are two answers: 1. I am married to Superman and 2. I drop the ball. A lot.

Here is where I am going to humble myself and ask for your help.  The things I need help with would require copious amounts of hours on the Internet. I don’t sleep enough as it is; I don’t want to cut back even more. Maybe you have seen something that can help me fulfill some other work obligations…and help me beautify myself this Christmas season.

1. I need Recipe/Parenting Links

You all know that I have a regular column over at Work It! Mom.  I will have a new post up midday on Tuesday.  Another part of my job over there is coordinating the Problem Solved column.  We have now fleshed out the week so that each day during the week has a “theme”. Mondays is all about menus, and Wednesdays is all about tips for helping parents (Potty training, discipline, etc.)

Do you have a post in either genre, or know of one that we should highlight?  Send the links my way!

2. I Need Arts & Design Posts to highlight

I have a gig over at BlogNosh as the lead Arts & Design editor.  My job over there is to merely highlight posts written by others.  I have scraped the barrel of the people I usually read, and cannot seem to find the time to scout new talent.  Do you (or someone you know) have a magazine-quality post that should be featured?

Let me know! My queue is empty.

3. How on Earth do I do “Smoky Eyes”?

You may remember that I posted last year about my lack of makeup knowledge. Shortly thereafter I went to MAC, had a session with one of their artists, and walked out with some goods.

I have since wore the same makeup combination Every. Single. Day.

Last week Matthew and I had an impromptu trip to the mall without the kids. I went into MAC and asked for some “Night colours”. They were too busy to sit with me and show me what to do, but they did hook me up with some new, darker, shades of eyeshadow.

With all of the December functions going on, it is a good time to bring on the smoke (Makeup, not cigarettes). I just have no idea WHAT GOES WHERE.

Help a girl out?

  1. I’m a bit of a makeup failure, but I can manage smoky eyes.

To do mine, I use: black mascara, dark grey eyeliner, a shimmery white eye shadow, a shimmery lilac-ish taupey coloured eyeshadow, and a shimmery dark plum eye shadow.

I start by using a makeup sponge to apply foundation to my eyelids. Not a lot, just enough that the eyeshadow has something to cling to. Next I line my upper lid and the outer half of my bottom lid with the eyeliner. Then I use a large eye shadow brush to apply the lilac/taupe eyeshadow all over my lid, up to my brow bone. Then I use the eyeshadow sponge thing that comes with the eyeshadow to apply the same colour just to my lids (to get more concentrated colour there.) Next I use a slanted eye shadow brush to apply the dark eye shadow. It’s important to not have a lot of shadow on the brush. I apply under my brow bone, in the creasey bit of my eyelid, from the centre of my eye outwards. I use small, feathery, upwards strokes and work my way from the centre of my eye out to where my brow bone starts to curve down to become my orbital bone, sort of following the natural curve. Then I use the slanted brush (still with dark shadow) and sort of follow along the lashline to the middle of my eye. So I end up making this shape on my right. Then I take a q-tip with some dark shadow on it and go over the eyeliner on my bottom lashline, just to blend it in and make it look smudged. Next I take a small eye shadow brush and brush on a bit of the shimmery white shadow on my brow bone, sort of where my eyebrow has arched up. Then I take a q-tip with the white shadow and dot a tiny bit on the inside point of my eye (tear duct area) and blend upwards. Finish off with mascara.

  3. “My daytimer looks like the Holiday Event Fairy threw up all over it.” Heh. Mine too!!!

Sorry, I can’t help much with your problems :-(
Unless you are after scrapbooking posts!? LOL :-)
I’m a relative newbie to the world of make-up, only having started wearing it regularly after turning 30 in March. I have no idea how to do “smokey eyes”, and I wouldn’t be doing them now anyway, because it’s summer. I’ll let you know next winter, if I figure it out! ;-)

  4. How about discussing a way for children to understand they aren’t and shouldn’t expect or get everything they want from Santa and they should expect to give to others first.

Smokey eye: line upper lid with a sharpened dark brown or black eyeliner pencil. Smudge with the end of the lid of the pencil lightly, add smokey brown/darker brown eyeshadow on top, blending to the crease/fold of your eye, making sure you have a lighter color/not chalky color for the brow bone. Repeat the liner/smudge in the corners under the eye and set with the shadow. Kinda like a gradation effect.

  14. The way MAC taught me to do a smokey eye was to:

    1) prime the eyelid with light foundation
    2) cover the lid with the lighter gray colored eyeshadow
    3) line the upper lid with an angled brush with the darker gray shadow and blend upwards
    4) use a round brush to make a triangle at the edge/crease of the eye and blend through the crease
    5) blending is crucial
    6) take the darker shadow and line the lower lid, blend to soften
    7) use white highlight shadow under brow and in corner of the eye
    8) mascara

I only wear makeup occasionally, so I’m no help there, but I do have a couple links.

nestingplacenc.blogspot.com is a great design blog that I’ve gotten a lot at great ideas from that I’ve actually used.

Also check out savingdinner.com. That site has totally changed how I feed my family.

    Good luck!

http://www.soscusine.com Web site out of Quebec click on English in the upper right hand corner to change the language. Pick your region and your profile i.e. vegetarian etc. and the number of people in your home. They will send you an e-mail each week with a suggested menu based on the flyers for your area and what is on sale that week.

    Sigh.

A smokey eye is just a messy way of doing your makeup. It’s really simple. You take dark brown or dark grey eye shadow and smear that all on your lids. Take a dark brown or black liner and line your top and bottom lids. Smudge the liner for that ‘smokey’ effect. You can put a little shadow on your eye sponge and smear a little under your eye. Then lots of mascara!
