I plan on posting random photos from yesterday amidst my points. Just in case you were wondering what on Earth is going on with the photos that do not have anything to do with the content.

1. More?

Back when I learned the manual settings on my camera, I was so! very! excited! I wanted to share my photos in all of their glory. I was posting them at full resolution. Yes, they looked great, but once you clicked on my link you had ample time to grab a coffee before my site would load. To combat this, I started using the “More” tag, and leaving only the first paragraph or so showing.

I soon smartened up and started sizing my photos for the web, like so.

Emily

It is not high resolution, but you get the idea. If you want to see full resolution photos, you can see them on Flickr.

Nathan

I have still been in the habit of using the “More” tag out of habit. Yesterday, LVGurl linked to this article titled “Why I Cannot Stand Your Blog“. It was funny, and made me realize that maybe it was time for the “More” tag to go. That way all of you feed readers can read without clicking through, and the rest of you are saved an extra click.

Thoughts?

2. Feedback

I used to (try to) email everyone who left a comment. And/or go to their site and leave a comment. My love language is “words of affirmation”, and I try to show love that way.

I seem to be busier and busier between school, swim lessons, boot camp, playing outside and, well, LIFE.

Graham

I still try to email back people who post questions, but sometimes I fail at that. Sometimes I will edit a comment, and add my comment in bold, but not everyone comes back to read comments. Or do you?

I have the “subscribe to comments” plug-in, so I could just post new comments to respond. That way if other people were wondering the same thing they get an answer too…

Thoughts?

3. New digs?

I registered my name as a domain (www.angelladykstra.com). I wanted only my first name, but some jerk bought most of them up. “angella.biz” is available, but I am not for sale.

I thought I should buy my name before anyone else did. The odds are slim, yes, but I have yet to meet another angella with 2 l’s, and that user name is always taken.

Graham

I wanted a separate site since my photography gigs are adding up. An online portfolio might be the next step and I wanted to make sure I was not stuck with “angella.info”. I don’t know anything.

I had the thought that maybe I should move this here blog over there. When I first went self-hosted, I picked this domain name for two reasons: 1) The Dutch last name and 2) The pre-school years are crazy.

Missy

As I posted earlier, I seem to be writing less about my kids as they get older. So maybe I should put this site in a sub domain of the new site, i.e. “journal” or something.

Emily

It would require some link editing, though I am told I can get someone much smarter than I who can make this site automatically redirect over there. I talked to Honey about it, and he thinks having everything in one place might be a good idea.

Thoughts?

4. In The Hot Tub

For those of you who do not care about the above and only come to see photos of the kids (Hi Mom!!), these are for you:

Love the photos. And congratulations for putting the full posts in your feeds. I’m slowly converting the world!

Your photos are amazing. I love full feeds and no comment verification, makes it easier cause we are all busy. I have a hard time keeping up with commentors too. I answer in the comments and hope they are reading my answers, I check back on blogs where I know that the blogger does answer comments.

1. I don’t mind the extra click but I don’t use a feed reader either.

2. I LOVE when you respond. Who wouldn’t? But…I don’t expect it, I’m not upset if you don’t and good lord woman where do you find all the time anyway?!!? I rarely come back and check comments but I could start subscribing. Do what works for you.

3. Site/Hosting….hear that “whoosh”…that’s the sound of all that stuff going straight over my head. I’ll follow your posts wherever they go.

4. TOO cute.

Why not set up your new site on your present server? It’s madness to pay two hosting fees. But you can have two domain names on the one server.
I’m jealous of your hot tub.

full feed. yes! i’m a big fan. and yes! no more “more”! big fan of that too! your site’s pretty awesome to start with though!

i loved that post of Karl’s!

Comment by ali on April 30th, 2008 @ 9:53 am

I prefer not having to click on “more” as well. I don’t mind so much about the full feed vs. preview.

we’re all busy. do what you can and what makes YOU happy. are you blogging for you or for others? ask yourself that very important question. who do you snuggle with at night? who answers the little voice in your head? I could go on…. but I’ll leave that for my blog on another day… hee.

Comment by Holly on April 30th, 2008 @ 10:12 am

I prefer that the “more” be “no-more”.

And I also love it when you respond to one of my comments, but don’t expect it either. We’re all busy.

Comment by ie on April 30th, 2008 @ 10:51 am

1. I use a feed reader, but I don’t mind clicking on “more” to read the rest. No big deal either way…

2. I’ll occasionally come back to read comments, but it depends on how busy I am, and the subject matter of your initial post.

3. No thoughts on that one. I know nothing about hosting, etc.

4. I love the pics! So cute!! Hot tubs are so awesome!

Sharon’s last blog post..Blast from the past!

Comment by Sharon on April 30th, 2008 @ 10:56 am

Like a PP said, I can do with or without the “more”. Though, I am a Bloglines gal, so this made it easier;)

Can’t you host two blogs on Bluehost for the same monthly price or is it more? Isn’t it unlimited for one server? (I thought about adding another domain and it said I had to pay 10.00!?) And I don’t see a problem with having your personal journal and business stuff separate. Unless it’s easier for ya, then have it.

Great pics! LOVE LOVE LOVE the last one;)

I love the full view.

And I LOVE your responses to the comments. I, by absolutely no means, have as many readers as you do (and perhaps it’s because I use the words, “by absolutely no means”) but I definitely fall behind in my e-mail responses. So responding within the comments, addressing the commenters by name (often in mass lists…erm, by mass on your site, I mean MASS and by mass on my site, I mean 4.) I definitely go back to read the comment page if I know the blogger is known to respond there.

P.S. I’m meeting Loralee in a couple of hours. Not to rub it in or anything…(I rule.) :-)
The Over-Thinker’s last blog post..Remind me to tell you about my accidental enthusiasm about a Strip Club…

Comment by The Over-Thinker on April 30th, 2008 @ 12:48 pm

1. I have to be honest: if it’s an especially busy day and I am trying to whip through my feed reader, I do not click on the posts that have the “more” link. Not because I don’t want to read–I usually think I will get back and read the post later–but because it’s just easier and faster. With your entire posts now showing up in my reader, I am about 99% more likely to read every single word. :-) So thank you for that!

2. If it makes you feel better, I think you still do a great job of replying to comments that need replies. And I am having the same dilemma. I used to reply to each and every comment, but no longer do so. Feeling guilty about the fact that I don’t.

3. Hmm…it’d probably be easier to keep it all on the same site in some ways, but do you want to separate your personal and professional lives a bit more? If you don’t care, then you could have a directory that was like, angelladykstra.com/dutchblitz/ :-)

4. I wish I had a hot tub!

I’ve been rumbling around these very questions in my own head - no answers yet, but I’ll share when I get some. Figuring out how to answer comments has been quite a dance for me as well.

Good luck! I’m sure you’ll figure out something that works well for you.

I appreciate when the full post comes through my reader. For many blogs that do the “more” thing, I don’t bother to come over but for you, sweet Angella, I do! ;)
sizzle’s last blog post..Front & Center

Comment by sizzle on April 30th, 2008 @ 1:35 pm

Angella,

1. I don’t really care about the “more” thing. I always like reading blogs better on the site, rather than the feed. I just use the feed to tell me when a blog is posted so I don’t have to click through my blogroll to find new posts. I’m lazy like that. I do like the lower resolution pics on the blog linked to larger in Flickr. Faster loading = goooood.

2. I love getting a response email to a comment. I don’t expect it, but it’s always a nice surprise. It’s easy for me to do, since I usually get less than 10 comments. For you though, it might be harder as the comments pile up. I’d say answer the questions (in an email, or in the next post if a clarification needs to be made), and leave the rest!

3. OMSH. IS. AWESOME. I’d hire her. I tried my name (www.jenniferwilson.com) but didn’t figure I’d get it since there are at least 10 in my small town alone, and probably millions throughout the world. Darn having a popular first name. But sweet having a popular last name because then I do not have to SPELL IT EVERY SINGLE BLASTED TIME! (Can you tell I don’t miss my old last name?)

4. She is so SO sweet! I love little girls! (And that reminds me I have to take mine swimming!!)

Have a lovely day, dear! (Oh, and I found the driver disc for the camera! Woo Hoo!!!)

I generally do not enjoy the “More” click. I have no good reason why, it just seems to break up my reading speed.

It won’t stop me from reading!!

BethanyWD’s last blog post..Five for Friday: One day and $1,864.71 short.

Comment by BethanyWD on April 30th, 2008 @ 2:11 pm

1. I will admit that I’m not a huge fan of the “more …” thing. But I comment on 99% of your posts, so even if you take “more …” away, I will still click that extra click to come to your site anyway! :-)
2. Snap - same love language, sista! I would love to reply to all my comments, but like you, I have a BUSY life. I cannot reply to every comment. Quite frankly, I don’t have time to come back a second time to read responses to my comments, so an email reply every so often is cool. But definitely not “expected”. I think you’re doing it right - reply to questions or really awesome comments, and leave the rest. That’s my philosophy. Otherwise I’d never get off this thing!
3. I? Am clueless about all that stuff.

Hannah’s last blog post..9 years ago

1.Clicking “more” isn’t a big deal, if it’s there I’ll click it, if not I’ll jsut keep reading.

2. Sure.

3. I am not totally sure what you have in mind but I’d want to keep business and personal separate.

4.Very cute!

Comment by Kristin on April 30th, 2008 @ 2:43 pm

1. Yay for no more ‘more’! That was the only reason I didn’t keep my .mac blog, I had no choice but to have the ‘more’ button.
However that being said if I am behind on my blog reading I find the ‘more’ really helpful.
2. I never come back to read comments..anywhere. I never even thought of it.
3. Got nothin, sorry, I am not the greatest at getting around either or responding, lost on this one.
4. sigh, sweetness
5. oh, there is no 5, ha…..um, well chow sista, love the pics!

Yeah so I have not much input on anything, that post that LuvGurl linked to made me realize I am a blogging idiot. I had no idea there were rules and such?! I personally think if you don’t like a person’s blog then don’t come back.

I am easy either way. You are a friend so unless you say I hate Kami in a post, I am here :-)

Good luck with your decision re: one blog or two! As I said, either way I am here dude!

Kami’s last blog post..Fame has a price

Comment by Kami on April 30th, 2008 @ 4:40 pm

1. It doesn’t really matter to me - I’ll read it any old way!

2. Sometimes I’ll come back to read comments, but if it was something I really wanted to know and there was no response, I could e-mail you and ask!!! I can definately see you’re busy!

3. Interesting…I tend to be organized, (most of the time) so I like the idea of everything being in one place!

4. Love those pictures! (And the other ones before too!)

Comment by Michele on April 30th, 2008 @ 4:55 pm

Love the pictures, as always.
I don’t know, I kind of like to “More” thingy.
Good job with all the photography gigs! I hope you keep enjoying it :D
Meg’s last blog post..Ugh

Comment by Meg on April 30th, 2008 @ 5:49 pm

Like Meg, I always like the pictures!

Personally, I like when sites are separate. The sites where … the cooking, the photography, the family stories, are all on the same site with different sections … ummm … not for me.

I like your site the way it is … but like all the rest … I’ll continue to visit and read regardless :)

I def like being able to read everything without an extra click. I did consider for a while that a partial feed would make people come to the actual and therefore be more likely to comment, which … no.

If people ask a question, an email or a comment back is just polite. As for whether people check back, if they asked a question, they should do.

I like the site here, especially if the other one would represent you as a professional.

1. I have never minded the extra click.
2. I like Dutch Blitz. It’s really creative.

Keep taking pictures ! I promise, someday I will buy :)

Comment by Heather on April 30th, 2008 @ 8:25 pm

Thank you, thank you, thank you for getting rid of the more button!!!!

Comment by Robyn on April 30th, 2008 @ 8:31 pm

*sigh* I’m up late working, and I know there are many things here I need to comment on… but my pea brain isn’t working.

I like seeing your whole feed :) I usually click over to blogs anyway to comment, but for some reason I just like to see them in their entirety. Like other people have said, sometimes you don’t have time to click over…so at least you can read it all at once.

I totally dig getting direct emails from you (and other bloggers who do that too). It’s like going out to the mailbox and getting a letter.

Wow. I’m making no sense.

Can’t see…

The “more” thing I wasn’t such a fan of, but understood why you did it. And it’s not like I would stop reading because of it or anything.

The whole feedback thing, I hear ya, life gets in the way or this blogging gig! haha! Good luck!

The site move, I think having everything in one place is a good idea, especially since you got your name as a domain. Sweet!
See ya tomorrow, if I find the place! haha!

What was the question? I totally forgot.

The only thing I remember was responding to commenters in comments. I hardly ever look back at old/previous comments/responses. Not that my two-cents is worth much.:)

Comment by gorillabuns on May 1st, 2008 @ 5:19 am

First of all - ditto to most of what everyone else said…but I’ll said it again, just for good measure:
1) yes - no “more” please. Although it really wouldn’t change how often I read your site. I’ll click away as much as I have to.
2) Love hearing from you -but definitely don’t expect it. I appreciated it the first time I de-lurked, but now I just feel at home leaving comments and I know you read and appreciate them.
3) Do what you want with the website. You seem to be more intelligent at those things than I ever will be, so I probably shouldn’t even offer my 2 cents. Seems like a great idea to start building your Angella empire by putting everything on one domain though :)
4) Ditto to Emily being beautiful.

Comment by Karmyn on May 1st, 2008 @ 11:56 am

SOOOOO glad you ditched the “more” option. I am a total feed reader. I have such a hard time keeping up with blogs as is and then when I have to go into individual posts to finish reading and commenting….ugh…too time intensive. Thank you for making my life easier!

Comment by Filtering Life on May 1st, 2008 @ 5:18 pm

I am not a fan of the More link. But, if you use it, I’ll click on it because you make me laugh and I love your pictures. Beyond that, I have no good bloggy advice. Just a great post, as usual!!

I’m glad you moved from the MORE tag. Although, I would like to see you add a link at the bottom or the top to the next post. Since I lag behind and always have like 18 posts to catch up on! :)

As for emails, it isn’t something I expect. It’s a nice thing and I try to do it all the time too, but sometimes it is just too much! And I don’t even have kids!
