Hockey Night In Canada

As most of you already know, my nineteen-year-old brother lives with us.  If you didn’t know that then, well, my nineteen-year-old brother lives with us. He has been here for nearly two years, working for a friend of ours in construction and could really use a girlfriend. Do you know how when you go to visit family and after approximately three days you know that it is time to part ways LEST YOU KILL EACH OTHER? The fact that he has been here for so long and I have never wanted to stab him says a lot about how great he is. Throw in the fact that he watches the kids whenever we need him to and he is elevated to Saint status.

Lance is his name. He is tall, dark and handsome and should really go on a date sometime. The girls at church are quite hilarious in their flirting attempts. They glom onto my kids even more than normal in an attempt to appeal to him because he is THE BEST UNCLE EVER. Dude is so laid back and knows of his awesomeness that he hasn’t really pursued his options.

Lance played rep-level hockey all through high school and has a love for the game that rivals none other. He joined the Old Farts Timers league here and has been pleasantly surprised by the caliber of hockey that is played. Most of their games are after 10 PM and as such, the kids have never been awake at a time when they could watch him play. This weekend his team is in a tournament with games at a reasonable hour. We scarfed down dinner and headed to the arena to watch him in action.

Watching

Lancelot

Lance-o-rama

The kids spent the first, oh, FIVE MINUTES watching the game.

Watching

Nathan

(Graham is hiking up his jeans because they are new jeans to him…and not what he is used to. Matthew hit Value Village while I was at work and bought some new duds for the kids (Kudos!) However. The jeans have BUILT-IN underwear (Um?))

One of Graham’s school friends was there so they spent the rest of the time playing tag and whatnot but it was all good. Nobody was crying and all of that running means that they were SO READY for bedtime.

Here is Emily being all natural.

CHEESE

Or possibly, all full of cheese.

(Side note: I often hold back photos in the thought that I will post them later. Then I don’t post them. And kick myself. Which hurts. Instead of wounding myself, I am wounding you with photos. Sorry ’bout that. But not really.)

I happened to capture this photo of Lance laying the smackdown on two of the opposing team members.

Smackdown

Or possibly, they crashed into each other and this photo is just awesome in how it appears tat he is THE WEAPON OF CHAOS. (We have been laughing all night.)

He really did get into a smackdown when someone from the other team pushed his goalie into the ice. Being the stellar defenseman that he is he got into it with the offending party. I was so busy cheering that I momentarily forgot about my camera (I KNOW. But Hockey is in my blood. I’m Canadian, eh?)

I came to my senses and snapped a few photos of the aftermath.

Fight!

Fight!

Do you see how his helmet is missing? It’s because it was RIPPED OFF OF HIS HEAD. I should think this is a bad thing, but the whole hockey-blood status I hold overrules everything else.

I have a bunch of contract work to do this weekend (BOO) but it will be paying for the iPhone that my husband agrees I should get (YAY). Aside from work we will be doing family stuff and hosting Easter dinner at our house on Sunday. I am already dreading sticking my hand into the nether-regions of a dead turkey but what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger. Or something like that.

How about you? Any plans for the Easter/Passover weekend?

  1. Emily is looking so TALL these days.

On Easter we’re going to church and after that we’re heading up to Brenda’s for a casual Easter dinner and a fun Easter egg hunt for the girls. I’m bringing the scalloped potatoes!

Also, the turkey-nether-regions thing is why I usually make ham for Easter. Just sayin’.

I’d make a ham if…I liked ham. The only kind of pig-related meat I like is bacon :)

  3. We’re heading to Saskatoon tomorrow when I get home from work. This is good news because it means that (a) someone else will be there to entertain my children, and (b) someone else will be there to put their hand into the nether-regions of a dead turkey.

With all this turkey on Jesus holidays, I’m wondering if Jesus ever ate a turkey. Hm. Something to ask the scholars.

  4. I doubt Jesus ate ham, what with dietary restrictions and all, but that’s what I will be searching for. Spiral cut, and hickory glazed.

  5. How did I miss that your brother lived with you? I’ve been reading for years; I’m just going to pretend that I somehow managed to miss every post that he appeared in and not take responsibility for the fact that I am, how do you say, out of it. (I’m not that much older than him, either…)

I don’t mention him often and this is the most I’ve posted about him to date…I mention him more on Twitter I think.

Close to his age, hey? Hmmm…

  7. Angella, your brother is all sorts of hot! Forgive me, but it needed to be said. My very first boyfriend was a hockey player and maybe, perhaps, I still harbor a soft spot for them :)

No need to apologize – he’s a good-looking kid. Watching the girls fawn all over him is quite comical…

The cool thing about him is that he is aware of all of the attention, but isn’t arrogant about it. There are some really cute girls in our church but he’s so laid back and “whatever” about it that it’s ridiculous :)

  9. I may not be Canadian, though until New Mexico I have always been a “border girl” and spent large amounts if time in your fine country, but I LOVE hockey! Love it.

Maybe because my dad would take us to hockey games a lot while growing up.

I always hide my face during the fights… but then, I hate it when anyone fights. Issues with conflict, no?

  10. That’s the single thing about Canada I most wish the US had–hockey culture! And no, I didn’t know your 19-year-old brother lived with you! My sister’s around that age; too bad she’s taken and lives in TN…maybe that will change ;-)

  11. Yay for hockey! The only thing we’re doing for Easter this weekend is my dad is making his Eggs Benedict for breakfast on Sunday. He only makes it twice a year – Christmas and Easter – so it seems like a special holiday meal to us. I’m way more excited about that than I would be about a turkey dinner.

Lance is a total hunk. I only saw him once and diverted my mind quickly to my own handsome hunk at home. ;)

I also love a hockey game in real life. Not into watching on t.v. but something about being at the rink just draws you and makes you feel so beautifully Canadian. :)

I am the same. Sports on T.V. bores me to tears, but I love a live game!

  15. WOW – as a 40-year-old, I have to admit (being Good Friday and all) that I had very inappropriate thoughts while looking at these pictures (not the ones of the kids, just your bro). :)

  19. What team is he playing for? I’ll be in and out of the rink all weekend playing in the women’s tournament, maybe I can watch them a bit. The kids are seeing me play for the first time this year b/c of the usual late ice times. I’m guessing it will be interesting for one minute before they hit dad up for a concession run.

My in-laws are here for the weekend and it’s supposed to be a surprise for hubby’s b-day, but I told him cuz he HATES surprises. They however, still think it’s a surprise. And I’m gonna make my uber-awesome Guinness Shepherd’s Pie for Easter… gotta show off my cooking skills and I don’t make good ham :)
    Happy Easter-egg hunting!
