Fear Of The Unknown

Emily

As I have already posted, Miss Emily became quit ill last Friday. In addition to vomit of epic proportions, she was complaining that her “pee hurt.” Being the Friday afternoon before a long weekend, and before our doctor left on holidays, said doctor was double-booked with appointments. The receptionist told us to come down anyway and they snuck us in. Our doctor told us that there was stuff in the urine that made her believe that Miss Emily did, in fact, have a UTI. The lab results would not be in until Tuesday but she gave us a prescription for antibiotics so that Emily could get better quickly.

We only managed to get one dose into Emily and after that, everything she took in came back up. On Saturday she told us that her pee didn’t hurt anymore. She was back to going at her regular intervals so we decided not to bother giving her the antibiotics.

On Tuesday afternoon I received a call from the receptionist at my doctor’s office asking how Emily was feeling. I told her that she was back to her normal self and seemed to be perfectly fine. She told me that if Emily were not fine, they would have her come in. Since she was feeling better, there would be no need for a doctor’s visit. Awesome.

Yesterday afternoon the phone rang again. This time, it was the doctor who is filling in for our regular physician while she is on holidays. She asked how Emily was feeling and about the antibiotics. I explained about the rotavirus and that because she said her “pee didn’t hurt” that we had not ended up giving her the antibiotics. She told me that the lab results stated that Emily did not have a UTI, but could possibly have something more serious that would not have responded to the antibiotics we were given anyway. She wanted to double check the results. Could I bring Emily in to give another sample?

I told her we’d stop in on our way to pick up Graham from school. I was a little cheesed that it had taken six days for them to tell us that it wasn’t a UTI. I dialed Matthew’s cell phone to tell him what was going on. He asked me,”What exactly does “more serious” mean?”

I honestly didn’t know.

The doctor’s communication skills were a little lacking and the whole conversation was a little discombobulated. I was just happy that at the end of the conversation I knew what I needed to do.

But Matthew’s question struck a little fear into my heart. If you know me at all, I am not one to blow things out of proportion. I am an “eternal optimist” and always believe that things will be fine. That they will work out. That there is no need to worry before we know what we need to worry about.

This time the worry concerned my baby girl and I spent a good ten minutes crying before I grabbed Nathan and the dog (Emily was napping) and walked around in the yard for some fresh air.

A short while later we made our way to the doctor’s office and I collected a sample for the nurse. She had the doctor come out to talk to me and I asked what was going on. She told me that they had found some of the Haemophilus virus in her last sample. There was no need to panic, but they really needed to do another test to see if she really had it, or if the sample had been contaminated somehow.

I took the kids out to the van, buckled them in, and pulled out my phone to Google Haemophilus. Wikipedia wasn’t much help, but this site (Saskatchewan Health website) gave more details. This virus is something that is resistant to many antibiotics and can cause things like meningitis and pneumonia. Emily has had all of her immunizations, but according to that site only 90% of people with their immunizations do not contract it. That leaves her odds of contracting it at 10%.

I do not like those odds.

She seems perfectly healthy so I am trying not to freak out, but if seeming perfectly healthy means that she is fine why does she need to be tested again? The doctor said that her feeling better is a “good sign” but it is best to test again. It’s better to know for sure, I guess. We should find out sometime today (Friday) and so all we can do is wait.

I’m about 90% sure that all will be well. The other 10% is scared for my little girl and asks that you pray for her.

Emily

I love her more than my heart can bear.

I will update this post once I hear from the doctor.

*** Doctor just called (1:40 pm PST) Emily is clear of infection. Hallelujah!

  7. That is totally scary and your doctor needs to brush up on her communication skilss, but I have nothing but good feelings for Miss Emily – I believe she’ll be fine. But in the meantime, she’s in my thoughts and prayers until we hear that she is indeed fine (her mamma is too since I know that she is probably consumed with worry right now). ((Hugs)).

  19. I am so sorry you’re going through this. I will never forget getting a call from our doctor’s office the day after my son had been at the ER, for what was thought was just a bad upper respiratory infection. They said his blood work had come back showing he had a strep pneumo infection. It was very serious. AND, it was an antibiotic-resistant strain. He was on very strong, IV antibiotics for 10 days before he was well again. But, he got through it (and he’s had meningitis too!) so I know that Emily can get through this as well. I know she’s stronger than my boy with his defective heart. Plus, she has those two older brothers who have toughened her up! I am thinking of you and your sweet girl.

oh sweetie, i’m sorry. that sucks! sending my best wishes to emily…. but keep this in mind, since you’re an eternal optimist, right up my alley. emily’s already feeling better, so that points to ‘Fantastic.’ however, even if *something* were to go awry, at least you know now, so that you can catch it early. I think the 90% is winning and will win, but at least now you know what the alternatives are.
