Dear Emily,
I held you on my hip yesterday while talking to your Daddy about the plans for your birthday and I stopped mid-sentence. I had been hit with a mind-numbing realization.
You are ONE.
The day you were born is still so vivid in my memory. The labouring in the hospital. The firm belief that you were likely another boy. The joking around with our friend and nurse Heidi. Visits from Auntie Karen on her lunch break.
Then it was time to push. Two pushes later you arrived into this world to the joyous screams of our doctor and nurse. They yelled in unison.
“It’s a GIRL!”
I burst into tears. Just like I’m crying now.
For I would have loved another boy as much as I love you. My heart just keeps growing. Yes, it may feel like it could burst some days but there is always room for more love, for both boys and girls.
But with the arrival of you, my girl, a whole new realm of parenting was opened. Instead of only trucks and super heroes and basketball, my future hold dreams of dancing, and dolls, and SHOES, and all things pastel. And also basketball, if Daddy has anything to do with it.
I think the boys will be better men for having a sister. They already look out for you all the time and keep you safe.
Your Daddy is a bowl of mush when you are around. He has a soft spot in his heart just for you, and you have the same spot just for him.
You make me want to be a better girl. To wear pink and to be softer and to love shoes as much as you do.
I can’t imagine life without you my sweet baby girl.

She looks like such a happy little thing, and I’ve had fun watching her in all her girlie glory, while I’m surrounded by my 3 boys…one day hoping for a grandbaby girl to dress up in the frilly dresses and have tea parties with!
