Duck!

So! Our Halloween was…fine.

Nathan woke up in the morning with a blazing fever. He felt better once he had downed some Advil but I still opted out of our Friday morning Mom’s group. I did not want to infect the other children. I hate *really dislike it* when people bring their germ-infested, snot-encrusted children to an event and three days later I am dealing with my own booger wars.

Nathan had a lot of of down time during the day (when I could make him actually stay still) so that he would be rested up for trick-or-treating. He seemed his normal self all afternoon so we piled into the van and headed into town.  We live in the sticks, so not a single soul comes to our house looking for candy.  Nobody trick-or-treats out here, so we go into town to the good candy-giving neighborhoods.

We were not sure how the night would go as when we left the house it was pouring rain. We live in desert country, which means it only rains about once every three months.  Of course, it had to be yesterday.  Boo.

Me met up with the cousins.

Eeyore is my favourite Winnie The Pooh character, and this duck costume slayed me.

Ack!  Could he BE any cuter?

Nope. I think not.

He took to his costume like a duck to water.

(Sorry. Couldn’t help it.)

The boots!

Those tights!

He almost makes me want another. Almost being the operative word here. That is so not happening.

I only took one photo of the actual trick-or-treating. Between the rain and helping the kids with their haul, there was no time for photos.

Here are the kidlets begging for candy.

Emily took to it like a pro.

More houses!

The lights are on!

More houses!

She was a little frightened by some of the Halloween decor (as was I), but thankfully most houses kept their decorations on the mild side.

We arrived home a little damp, but with a haul that filled four empty ice cream buckets. I placed all of the “unsafe” candy in a bucket for Matthew and I to share. The classification of “unsafe” was used fairly liberally.

The weirdest things the kids received were cans of pop. CANS OF POP. They ended up with three cans each. This is the first time the kids have received pop in their loot bag, and I can’t help but think it’s an odd “treat” to give.

Did your kids get anything that left you as befuddled as I am?

My girls got giant freezies, which I thought was odd but otherwise, it’s was just the usual.

I’m glad you guys got a little fun in despite the fever and the rain.

Kaylie received a can of pop as well. We don’t let her drink it at home, so it was a nice treat for her. But yes, a weird treat. The rest of her treats were pretty normal, except a few unwrapped candies that I threw away. When I used to go (when I was LITTLE), I got a toothbrush once. I also got tracts - yup, trying to convert trick-or-treaters.

I have come to the conclusion that Dykstras make ADORABLE hardly-tolerable-CUTENESS boys. Oh, and Emily’s not so bad either, I was just more referencing THIS post.

I’m glad that YOU got some candy too! I may or may not snoop stuff out of Kaylie’s bag …

Cans of pop? Very odd.
Took my son to the Stadium shopping district so we could T-o-T early. The weirdest thing is shops giving out candy with sticker or business cards taped to them - like the kids are going read that stuff? Funny. Oh, and son went into a store - like an old style drug store, and after he got a candy bar, grabbed a toy off the shelf on the way out! I was horrified! and apologized to the clerk and tried to give it back but she insisted we keep it. It was only a rubber finger puppet but still… it was kind of confusing in there hee-hee

I’m used to the can of pop thing. We had a couple neighbours that would give out a can of pop or a whole chocolate bar - you got to pick! When I was younger, those were the exciting houses to go to! All the kids look adorable and it sounds like they had a great time! Just think, on to Christmas now…..Ahhh!!!

We’ve gotten pop before too though not this year. It’s so heavy, not a great idea for little ones….

Ah candy! Gotta love Halloween and the “unsafe” candies.

The grossest candy is that gummy candy that looks like real food - hamburgers, eggs and bacon….YUCK!

Strange - We don’t get any kids to our house so all I bought this year was “unsafe” candy!

Wow, he did great in that duck costume! He looks to be about the same age as my G and he would NOT have anything on his head. We took 4 pictures of him in his lion costume and that was it. He wasn’t having it.

And yes, that’s the cutest duck I’ve ever seen! : )

POP? Really? Wouldn’t that be heavy to carry?

We always get playdough…

I spent the evening in town handing out candy at my sister-in-law’s house so the kids could loot the neighbourhood, as I too, live in the sticks.

Colour me surprised when I went to grab the candy to hand out and discovered my in-laws were handing out jars of PLAY-DOH and tooth brushes. Weird enough alone, but as a combination?

Thank God I married the normal one in the family.

Were they the big cans of soda, or little mini ones? I saw some cute mini Jones Sodas at Target and wanted to buy them (except I live in an apartment so that I DON’T have to answer the door for trick or treaters)

Regular-sized! And no-name to boot! And ORANGE POP, which reminds me of the stupid glucose test I had to do when I was pregnant.

Though I guess it would be weirder if they handed out Diet Coke ;)

That is seriously the cutest duck EVER! :) I’ve never heard of getting pop before, but when I was a kid I wouldn’t have minded at all. I don’t remember what the weirdest thing we ever got was. Maybe some fruit or other healthy snacks, which was always so disappointing. Those we always automatically put in the “unsafe” pile for our parents.

We went down to Crescent beach and since there are a lot of vacation homes sitting empty some people get others to leave a bucket of candy on the doorstep so the kids can help themselves. We waddled up to once such house and looked in the bucket to find these SICK, homemade cookies that looked like long, skinny, bloody witch fingers. The kids passed on those, but Steve swiped one.
The kids all looked so cute!!

Oh, bother: Eeyore is my favorite! Winnie the Pooh character, too. I used to have a ginormous stuffed version of him, that even went to college with me because he was a good cuddler.

cans of pop are the norm around here (in my part of ontario anyways!)… it is a nice break as a kid to get a can of pop aside from the 10 million rocket candies or the 50 000 bags of chips :) You need something to wash all that sugar down with, don’t ya??

I have never heard of getting cans of pop before. As much as I like pop, it would be so heavy to lug around! Maybe they ran out of candy and still wanted to give something out? Who knows…as for our loot, the weirdest thing we got was a juice box…but Hudson pulled it out as soon as we got home and drank the whole thing, so maybe it wasn’t so weird.

That’s just weird. Almost as weird as calling soda “pop.” I hate the word pop! But at least you don’t call them all “Cokes” because that makes me insane!

Hee! The great Canadian/American divide. Up here, a “soda” is like a milkshake, involving fruit and some kind of carbonated beverage, like club…wait for it…soda.
Comment by angella on November 1st, 2008 @ 6:20 pm

Your pop people must be from Ontario. I used to get them all the time as a kid and my in-laws always give it out. :)
It was a banner year, I don’t have kids, but one student gave me a gift (a really nice one actually) and we raised money for Free the Children at our school dance, and a few cans for the foodbank. No strange candy, just hyper kids working up a sweat at the dance.
I completely believe in “unsafe” candy, as a matter of fact we only had 7 children (almost broke the record of 9), but I insisted on buying a box of 50!

Comment by Amanda on November 1st, 2008 @ 6:53 pm

The cousins are beyond cute. Maybe the ‘pop-givers’ are former Albertans? My kids usually get a few cans, as did I when I was a kid. It was a big hit, as we were only allowed pop when we had a sitter (2 x a year).
Take Care!
