Does This Look Like A Boy To You?

We all know that Miss Emily is a little lacking in the hair department. It is (finally!) starting to come in, but there is still a way to go until I will be watching her pull out be able to put barrettes and pony tails in her hair.

She comes by it honestly, though. Here I am on my first birthday.

Me! One year old!

Wasn’t I cute? This was before my twenty-year awkward phase kicked in.

You would not think I was ever bald, what with the mop of hair I sport now.

Back to Emily. There is not a single outing that we go on where someone does not refer to her as a boy.

This summer I ran into an acquaintance at a birthday party and she asked me what “his” name was. “He” was wearing a pretty brown shirt. When gently I told her that “his” name was Emily, she felt terrible. She has two girls who had both been bald until they were two. She never took them out unless they were dressed head to toe in pink or lavender.

I started doing the same thing. I thought the boy comments would stop. They did not.

Pink and purple clothing does not seem to help ALL OF THE BLIND PEOPLE around these here parts.

Yesterday Miss Emily and I went grocery shopping. Two different little old men seemed to be quite taken with her. Er, “him”. Emily pointed at me and the one said, “Oh, he sure knows who his Mommy is!”

While in the checkout line, the other one said, “He really seems to be enjoying his snack!”

This is what she was wearing.

Pink, pink, PINK
DOES THIS LOOK LIKE A BOY TO YOU?

Also?

THESE PEOPLE ARE ALLOWED TO DRIVE?

I think Emily is getting tired of all of these boy references too.

Who are you calling a BOY?

Bring. It.

Bring it. Bring. It. On.

I thought older men referred to all babies as boys, at least that has been my experience. She definitely does not look like a boy.
My hair could not be put up with barrettes until I was 2.

She’s the most purdy little girl i’ve ever seen. Who cares what they think we all know that truth!!!

  4. Haha, that last picture is awesome! You tell ‘em Emily! =)

  5. Rt got called a girl at least a half a dozen times. Um, hello? It was more humorous than anytime, but I thought, come on people!

You did have a little mop by your 1st bday. Rt was as bald as you can get at one and has made slow progress now 1 1/2 years later. You are preaching to the bald choir.:)

Glue a bow to a strand of hair? haha

  6. Yea, you tell em Emily!!! Cute little outfit too. I cannot believe someone would mistake HER for a HE in that dress!!!!

    What a cutie she is!!!

  7. Oh, Makenna could be wearing bright pink with a sign flashing “GIRL. GIRL.” and people would still tell me how cute HE was.

I realized, after talking to friends with girls AND boys, there is a universal rule of thumb: Strangers will always assume that your baby is the opposite gender.

  8. Most people just truck along, completely oblivious. This would be the kind of person who thinks nothing of putting their hands on a pregnant woman’s stomach.
Actually, I think that they are just awkward folk, trying to connect from somewhere in their unobservant world.
You would not believe how many people asked me (when I was doing readings at a public venue) Are you for real?
I got so fed up with the same question that I once blurted “No! I’m a fraud! I’m taking money from innocent people under false pretences.”
Then I realized that they were these awkward people who just wanted to have a dialogue, but had no filters.
I was kinder after that epiphany.

  9. A woman in Safeway told me Olivia was the cutest boy she’d ever seen. I was partly complimented and partly insulted.

  10. Two weeks ago at church an old man asked me if “he” referring to Katelyn would like a candy….”she” was wearing a bow in her hair (because she finally has enough hair) and wearing a purple shirt that said “big sister”….I don’t get it either!!!!

  11. I once referred to a baby by the wrong gender, but I think he/she was in yellow — a completely ambiguous color when it comes to babies, but that sure didn’t stop the mom from getting all huffy with me.

You, however, have put your daughter in a DRESS, for pete’s sake. There should be no mistaking!

  12. That outfit screams girl. People are blind. LVGurl is right, I guess people will always assume a baby is the opposite gender of reality.

  13. I love that last picture!

  14. People are lame. And also blind. With those baby blues of hers and her pastel wardrobe, you’d have to be a fool to think she’s got a penis.

  15. She could definitely take them.

  20. I got that same response with Meredith – who now has a mass of golden hair all over her head. But as a baby? Dressed completely head to toe in pink? BOY BOY BOY

    Gah!

SHE is adorable – and who knows … she may like the bald look in her teen years and return to it!

  21. She SO doesn’t look like a boy! But I STILL get people calling Tyler a girl. So go figure :-)

  22. Wow. Seriously. These people need to have their licenses taken away.

She doesn’t look like any boy I’ve ever seen.

From a bald till age 4 kid:-)

Up until I had kids, I was completely unaware of how many people out there are willing to say crazy (and sometimes even hurtful) things to complete strangers. It is bizare. With both of my pregnancies I had numerous people come up to me and tell me how huge I was. You can’t have a 10 lb baby and not be huge, but it isn’t exactly what you want to hear at the supermarket. And I don’t know how many people called my daughter a “cute little fella” no matter how she was dressed.

  25. People can be total asses. When her hair grows in (Which will be freaking AMAZING thanks to the momma with the AMAZING hair) it will stop.

She doesn’t look remotely like a boy to me.
And that DRESS!!! WITH THE DOTS!!!! AAAAAAHHHHHH!!!!

Damn. I need a little girl.

  26. too funny. I don’t think people think before commenting, most of the time…

    [Reply]

  27. I don’t think people are really thinking about it half the time and doubt that it’s completely intentional.
Anyway, Emily looks like an adorable little girl to me. And isn’t that what really matters? ;-)

That happens to me with Belle all the time, especially by old gentlemen. You crack me up, with the driving line. It’s probably a good thing God gave us filters.

  29. Seriously? She is SUCH a girly girl. People are crazy.

  30. My husband’s 90-year-old grandmother used to refer to Annalie all the time with male pronouns–HER OWN GRANDDAUGHTER–right up to the time she died, when Annalie was almost three and had plenty of hair. My mom’s theory is that because Granny only had a son, that’s how she referred to all babies when she was in doubt. Maybe those elderly people who refer to Miss Emily as a boy had sons when they were parents. :-)

(But really, I don’t get it either.)

A boy eh? My sister had short hair when she was about 12 and this old man came up to my dad and her at church and said something refering to my dad’s son. My sister even had a brett in her hair!!! I just don’t get it! Love the dress!

  32. Some people… when Marin was about 4-5 month old we were at IKEA and a man, in about his 40′s commented on what a cute little boy we had. Marin was wearing a dress, had a pink blanket in the stroller with her and she was also wearing a purple hair clip in her hair. Her hair was about an inch and a half long at that point. Some people just don’t get it!

Emily is a super cute little GIRL!

    [Reply]

  33. Ok that dress is ADORABLE! My sister was also bald until she was 2 so I think my mom got a lot of the boy comments. She certainly does NOT look like a boy, but people are idiots nowadays ;)

  34. Haha, yeah, I was equal opportunity Canon v. Nikon, but then I saw how much more expensive Canons were in my parts, and Nikon won me over instantly! ;) For entry-level dSLRs, I just couldn’t see a huge difference. But I like to look at photos shot on all different types of cameras! =)

Oh it always happens. I too, was a bald-til-two baby and I’m sure everyone thought I was a “he”. I have had people tell me that Shea is too pretty to be a boy…go figure. Oh well. Maybe you should just pretend she is a boy for those poor color-blinded people and play along. Duh.

  36. Look at the eye lashes! Totally a little girl! And pink! These people should not be driving. Insane.

    She’s adorable.

hahaha. Honestly? SHE LOOKS LIKE A GIRL! Even without the dress.

This past Sunday (while visiting my brother and your sister-in-law) Liliana had a PINK soother, a PINK DRESS on, and was in a carsea with a PINK bunting bag – a lady said, “Oh, all these little babies are so cute! How old is your little boy?”

    WHAT?????

I’m with ya – these people are allowed to DRIVE??????

  38. That’s ridiculous! Get a new prescription people…she is obviously a girl. A pink jacket and adorable dress….are you kidding me???? What is so difficult about this. The hair is coming…how exciting. We send good follicle vibes your way.
