There is no Foto Friday today. Some people are sad. Even more people are probably rejoicing.
I never said they would be every Friday, but I feel bad if I miss one. In addition to traveling and then shuttling kids to school and swimming, there was a birthday party to prepare for. I also have some work deadlines to meet. There was no time to draft a decent Foto Friday post, as I had to sleep sometime. I am also the type of person who, if I cannot do something to the best of my ability, would rather not do it at all. The same mantra applies to vacuuming. And to my bathrooms. And to ironing. And to folding laundry. The list really could go on.
There is another reason Foto Friday got bumped. As much as I love you guys, I love Emily more. The truth hurts, I know, but there is a birthday to recap! This takes precedence over any other topic!
First I need to thank you for all of your kind wishes. You are the sweetest.
Without further adieu, I bring you photos from Miss Emily’s first birthday (There are a billion more on Flickr).
I had wanted to decorate cupcakes all fancy-schmancy like, but after attempting a couple (with dismal results) I just stuck to plain cupcakes with pink and lavender icing.
Instead of plain, I prefer the term “Classic”. Whatever. They tasted amazing, even if I do say so myself. Karen, Amanda and Christy will back me up on this one.
Onwards!
Hey Emily! Here’s a birthday hat!
Um. It’s not edible.
Here! Try a cupcake!
Um. It goes in your mouth. Like so.
There you go. What do you think?
Look as though you likey.
Yep. Pretty happy. It looks like you are sticking out your tongue, but really you are licking your lips and saying, “num, num, num”.
You had a great mid-day party with your (and my) friends. After supper we sang Happy Birthday again, as Daddy and Graham were now home to party with you.
You were so excited about a second cupcake today that you raised your hands in thanks.
Um. We’re Baptists. Hand raising is frowned upon. So is clapping, apparently. Just so you know.
You dug in right away this time. You knew what goodness lay before you.
This is what you call “finger licking good”.
After supper I had Daddy take a few photos of his girls. I have two favourites, and so I will just have to develop them both. There’s this one:
And this one:
I was worried that the day would be a flop, but it was a great day with friends, food and fun. Also? Emily had no clue what was going on. That helped to take the pressure off.
I’m going to bid you adieu. I have a full day of work to do today and a busy weekend planned (including more work). I also have some leftover cupcakes to devour. Anyone want one?

Yummy!! Sounds like a FUN celebration;) Send over a cupcake:)
Comment by Randi on October 12th, 2007 @ 10:02 amI’m glad she’s liking cupcakes already! That is crucial for future success. And the Baptist comment cracked me up - I literally LOL’d. Although down here in the Bible Belt, they are into hand raising, so we change it to Presbyterian. =) Hope you enjoy your weekend!
Comment by ashpags on October 12th, 2007 @ 10:05 amCupcakes ~ what a great 1st birthday party food! Now I want one, or two or three…
Comment by Lisa on October 12th, 2007 @ 10:09 amSo glad to hear Emily’s birthday was a smashing success! Enjoy the weekend. ![]()
LOVE the shot of her licking her finger with the cuppycake in the foreground. It’s a Foto Friday lesson in disguise!
Comment by Leah on October 12th, 2007 @ 11:53 amOh cupcakes, mmmm, sounds devine!
What a great day and those pictures are fantastic. Both definitely need to be developed.
Ps this gives me a chance to catch up the Foto lessons this weekend
oh, wait I mean, work.

The cupcake was made of dreams. Really. You have no idea. It took me to new heights of joy.
Thanks for letting us share in Emily’s special day. Also, for letting me destroy your floor by making your dustbuster explode. That’s what friends are for. ![]()
Cupcakes … mmmm … would it be bad to make cupcakes and have them for breakfast? Yes? Okay then. I’ll wait until morning tea time.
Looks like Emily had a lovely birthday party. First birthday parties are always about celebrating “getting through the first year” and the birthday kid has no clue what’s going on. Glad to see Emily continued the trend. It’s so much harder when they are older and KNOW what cake/theme/presents they want!! ![]()
Yep, I’ll be right over for my (classic) cupcake! Classic is always in style, right?
The pictures of you and Em are beautiful. You’re both stunning, honestly.
Comment by Jill - GlossyVeneer on October 12th, 2007 @ 1:32 pmI have to tell you that I’m really struggling to comprehend that its a year already since Emily was born. In fact it barely seems a year since you were announcing your pregnancy. Scary!
However I’m so glad Emily had a beautiful party, and more importantly that she now gets the importance of cupcakes ![]()
okay- forget the cupcakes for a minute- your hair is gorgeous!! Wanna trade?
Your photos are so great- I love the ones with the contrast bumped up. Sounds like a busy time for you all. Have a great weekend-
Comment by kelly on October 12th, 2007 @ 2:34 pmLooks like fun! Your pics of thanksgiving were great - it was awesome to see your kids together with Jen’s and Jen’s. Did you know Josh and Jen were my youth leaders before they got married? We always joked about how cute their kids would be if they gave them all their curly blonde hair and blue eyes. And voila!
Comment by Tricia on October 12th, 2007 @ 3:42 pmLovely lovely lovely. All of it.
and.. cupcake please?
If I lived anywhere near you, I’d drive over for one of those delicious looking cupcakes!
As usual, love the pics. I know I say that every time, but every time they’re AWESOME! Gorgeous ones of you and your girl too.
Comment by Jen on October 12th, 2007 @ 5:06 pmI can’t believe it’s been a year. AND you look FABULOUS!
Comment by Lisa on October 12th, 2007 @ 6:47 pmOh yes, send one to Texas!!! I’m sure it would melt before it gets here though. Love the pictures. I really like the last ones of you two together.
Hey, I’m Baptist too…and we don’t dance either - (well, THEY don’t, but I do!!)
Comment by Dana on October 12th, 2007 @ 6:58 pmIt looks as though Emily had a great day! Those classic cupcakes look devine and by Emily’s face it looks like she agrees! Beautiful photos as usual!
Comment by Michele on October 12th, 2007 @ 8:00 pmLoved the pics of you and Em….so precious…..
Btw, I am evangelical….and we are absolutely down with a little hand raising, clapping…you name it. LOL!!!
Glad to hear you had a blessed birth-day….
Always
Heidi
Oh, we are evangelical too, and love to clap…it just seems as though our current congregation, while lovely, is not so into clapping ![]()
I can’t believe your little bambino is already one!!! Wow. Where has the time gone? I LOVE the pic of her licking her thumb… so sweet. And you look pretty ‘hot mama’ too.
Comment by Susie on October 12th, 2007 @ 8:11 pmmmm, cupcakes!
I love 1st birthdays. Such a landmark.
So glad it was a hit!!
Comment by little miss mel on October 12th, 2007 @ 8:41 pmGlad the birthday went so well, and that you enjoyed it as much as Emily did. It’s funny how much stress we put on ourselves for an event that they wont even remember! The pictures of the two of you are priceless.
Comment by Amanda Franks on October 12th, 2007 @ 10:56 pmAwww - I really love the 4th picture of Emily. It is such a classic, black and white, and it just captures something with the way she is looking off to the side like that. I’m no photographer - I just know what I like when I see it so pay me no mind. And both of those last two photos are great. I would have a hard time choosing so don’t choose. Get a double photo frame. There, problem solved. LOL. Glad you had a fun party for Emily and really if cupcakes are decorated too fancily, people will just be afraid to touch them so I’m glad yours were the “classic” and deliciously edible kind. Good for you!
Comment by teeni on October 13th, 2007 @ 1:48 pmOops - I meant to say sepia tones in the picture with Emily - not black and white. I’m not that color blind. But my fingers are when typing, I guess. LOL.
Comment by teeni on October 13th, 2007 @ 1:49 pmThose cupcakes…..I still dream about that icing. YUM!
I’m gonna need that recipe for when I do Liv’s b-Day party. And PS. Emily is SERIOUSLY so cute! That was a nice party. Nice and laid back.
I did Manda’s pics today and it was fun. Let me know when we should do yours!
I wish you could e-mail me a cupcake. I think, if you could, I’d break out and clap in church! Happy Birthday Emily - you are a little doll!
Comment by Heidi F on October 14th, 2007 @ 3:37 pm

Me! I want one! Something tells me it wouldn’t survive the trip to Texas but OHMY they look good.
And I’m not quite the hand-raising type myself but that cupcake is worth a praise or two.
HAPPY BIRTHDAY EMILY!
(The second picture of the two of you is just breathtaking. Frame it! Frame it!)
