Colou(red)

I have been uninspired lately when it comes to photography. Having one child in full-time school and another in part time preschool has kicked my butt. Life is wiping the floor with me.

I find that photography is like writing. If you get out of the habit it is that much harder to start again. I have managed to keep up the writing but the photography has taken a big hit.

I stumbled upon an article that discussed photographing colour, as opposed to photographing a subject.

I got to pondering about colour on one of my (many!) drives to school. For years, my favourite colour was blue. Navy blue, to be precise. I branched out to other shades of blue, as I find it to be a peaceful colour.

The blue was lonely. It needed a friend. I found the perfect friend in Red. She is kind of hot.

While our house is pretty inundated with wood, blue and red are prominently on display. They seem to be a good mix.

When trying to get my groove on with my camera I thought that maybe I should focus on red. Inspi(red), or so it seems.

Fresh salsa.

And the utensils I use to can (Jar?) the salsa.

Strawberries from the garden (before the North wind blew in).

Apples on Amanda‘s orchard.

An IKEA lamp.

I thought I should wander our property to see what red I could find.

A poppy from the garden.

Leaves from a bush along the driveway (I don’t know its name!) that turns red every fall.

A tennis ball.

Honey wearing his “Lumberjack jacket”.

I think it needs to “accidentally” be sent to the thrift store.

One of Honey’s clamps.

The taillight on our trailer.

I know. A tail light. But it’s red!

Let us finish with something pretty. The following is a red gerbera daisy.

Daisies are my favourite flower.

It felt good to press the shutter button and focus on something different than the same old, same old. What do you do when you need to be inspired?

  2. Red and blue together are my new favorite colors!
I think, like you said, that the best thing I can do to get inspiration back is to do something every day. I had major writers block until my Post Every Day in October thing and now I’ve got ideas all over the place.

I read other people’s blogs and yoink ideas from them!
    Just kidding.
I like to try to take a step back and try not to frustrate myself. Especially since it’s that hectic time of year when I need to be writing papers and stuff.

Still, your inspi(red) adventure totally worked.

  6. Maybe you could take series of photographs in different colour schemes, to complement the decor of different rooms?

I’m not a photographer, but I carry an ideas book so I can jot down thoughts, sentences and observations for my writing projects (blog and other). Even if it’s just a sentence or a note on a person on the bus, and I don’t have a particular project in mind for it, it usually finds a place to rest. Now, if only I could finish writing all those projects I’ve started…

  7. I love red – it’s such a beautiful colour, and those are gorgeous photos!

When I need inspiration, I usually go for a run or a walk with my iPod. Music and being outside in nature gives me time to think and see, and ideas often come to me then.

  9. Those are a great idea. I was taking pictures of five babies, together, yesterday – whew. I would have loved to have had another eye there. I was thinking about you, as I was shooting… wondering what someone else would do differently.

  11. Color is a big inspiration to me, too, and I typically find myself drawn to all shades of blues and greens. I do love reds and oranges, especially in the fall, and poppies are one of my favorite flowers.

Reading a good book inspires me, too, as does taking a walk somewhere quiet and outside.

Those were great pictures. When I’m looking for inspiration I tend to organize. Something about going over what I already have/know leads to newness for me.

  20. oohhh! I like! I like the idea of photographing one color. Yours are inspiring.
Yesterday evening I noticed there were two spider webs adorning the garbage can and between the recycling bin and the gate. We have these huge brown spiders and I’ve been waiting for a good moment to capture them. So I got the kids in the house, changed out of my work clothes, told hubby he was in charge for a few minutes, changed out the lens on my camera, tracked down my tripod all while battling the clock and the rapidly waning light – I got two shots (2!!!!) and suddenly – “Change Battery Pack” !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Holy crap I was pissed. I don’t even know if they worked or not yet.
I like your examles of Red. Nicely done.
