I took his name. We talked it over, and this was something that was Really Important to him, and something that inspired a shrug in me. So here I am, with his name.
I didn have a nice conversation with a Southern Lady a few months ago about marital name-changing, and I pointed out that changing your name isn’t actually a Biblical command, that it’s a cultural tradition. I pointed out two cultures that have different name-changing traditions than ours. I then said that since my husband and I live in our cultural tradition and that names are verrry in our culture, I changed my name because I love him and I honor what’s important to him.
If Scott and I ever get married, I’ll probably keep my last name. He has a good last name–van Velsor–but I like my last name–Luna–and as I’ve now worked as a journo for more than a decade, my name is out there as is. It would be difficult trying to change it and Kristin Luna van Velsor is just plain horrible.
I did. Because I hate my maiden name. It’s Hucks. So growing up I endured a lot of Maria F_cks and Maria Sucks and Maria Sucks a F-ck chants. Oh wait wait – Maria Diarrhea Sucks and F-cks.
I took my husbands last name because it mattered to him. I also like the idea that our children will have the same last name as their parents. But, because I chose to take his name it also means that now I get teased for being April Showers, bring May Flowers. People are so proud of themselves when they get how close Sauers and Showers is and giggle. Trouble, they aren’t unique in their findings since I get it all the time!

That’s what I would get when I was a Moran! All of the people who thought they were so original. “As in MORON?” Not so funny
