Bookish

I mentioned a while back that a friend of mine (The blogger formerly known as Schnozz) had contacted me about reading a book (pre-release) and writing a blurb for the back cover. A few weeks ago I was contacted by the editor (Hi, May!) who asked for my address so that I could receive a copy.

Yesterday afternoon, that book arrived in the mail.

Cover

The writers who have contributed to this book are amazing. Jennifer (Schnozz) wrote a great essay (per usual), and the ever-wonderful Catherine Connors (Her Bad Mother) wrote an amazing piece about the “politics” of Mommy Blogging. I could talk about each contributor and their individual chapters, but I thought I would just mention the two women whom I have actually met (and who I think are pretty fantastic).

After reading through all of the essays, I drafted a blurb that would be plastered on the back of this book. A REAL BOOK.  Having not ever doing something like this (Obviously), I fired what I had drafted off to my friend Danny (Who is not only a stellar blogger, but is a bona fide Writer). He told me that I sounded “authorly.” Which, well, SHUCKS. Without further adieu, here is that little paragraph I wrote on the back of a REAL BOOK:

Blurb

I still can’t believe that:  1. My opinion actually matters, and 2. MY NAME IS ON THE BACK OF A BOOK.

If you want to buy a copy of “Mothering and Blogging: The Radical Act of the MommyBlog” you can get it here.

Speaking of Danny, you might have seen this already on Flickr but it bears repeating here. I am one of the lucky ones who got an advance copy of his book that is coming out on August 4th.

RAGE

The reason for the advance copy will be revealed this summer (Oooooh, I’m SO MYSTERIOUS). I mentioned on Flickr that this is the second time that I have read Rage; I actually read it this past winter in Word. There is something that I did not mention on Flickr, as I hate to sound like I am tooting my own horn. However. It is far too cool to not mention. After reading Kristabella‘s post where she talked about being mentioned in the acknowledgment section of Jen Lancaster‘s latest book, I knew that I had to share it.

Acknowledged

I am in the acknowledgment section of Danny’s book. Along with some pretty spectacular people, as you can see.

I was not expecting it at all and when he told me I honestly made the, “What the…?” face. It’s kind of awesome.

You can read all of the book news (Including tour dates!) over at his book website. It’s available for pre-order. Go buy it. You won’t regret it.

Seeing my name in print has inspired me to get off of my duff and do something about seeing my words in print. I distinctly remember one conversation with Danny where he asked me if I wanted to be published. I confirmed that yes, I did. He then asked me what I was doing to make it happen and when I replied that I was doing absolutely nothing he asked me, “And how is that working for you?” Right. Consider me both admonished and encouraged.

***

We picked Graham up from school on Monday and upon arriving home he told me that he was “going to write a story.” Forty-five minutes later he presented a seven-page booklet to me. There was a storyline, complete with illustrations.

The Incredible Hulk & Iron Man

After reading it and singing his praises he told me that he was going to type it into the computer and make it into a “real book.” Dude will be published before I am. Just you wait and see.

***

In non-book-related (but entirely-blog-related) news, I received a sweet package in the mail from Sizzle this past Friday. (We have plans to dance to Boom Boom Pow in Chicago this July, along with Kerrianne and Rhi. Brace yourselves for the photos.)

I had won a giveaway on her site a while back and the prize was a care package JUST FOR ME.

Sweet package!

I have been listening to her mixed CD non-stop. I used that bag while out shopping this weekend and filled it with one dress, four tops, a pair of black capris, and clothes for the kids. It was both fashionable AND practical.

When I won her contest I told her that I would pay it forward. This means that I will whip up a care package, Okanagan (CANADIAN) style for a lucky winner. All you need to do is leave a comment. I will pick the name using random.org (WHICH COULD BE THE STORY OF MY LIFE) sometime this weekend. Or next week.

If you need a question to answer to help you know what to say, tell me what your favorite candy is. I bought some Sour Patch Kids when we went to see Star Trek this weekend and the leftovers have been CALLING MY NAME ALL WEEK.

ok, so have you ever had the tangerine slice candies that are covered in the sour sugar? i’ve never seen them in bulk, only in the .05 cent candy bins at 7-11. but those, THOSE, are my favorite.
that and any new flavor of gum.

Leftover candies? What’s that? I love all kinds of penny (ok, nickel and quarter) candies.

Congratulations on being mentioned in a book, that is so neat! And to be on the back cover of another? You go girl! Clearly you need to be writing yourself!

I keep looking back to the conversation that happened around the table the other day about being “hot”. I think you should submit it somewhere…Chicken Soup, Reader’s Digest…Somewhere, it’s just so cute!

Very exciting about seeing your name in print! :)

Oh, and thanks again for your great Guac recipe on your other blog. It’s always a big hit whenever I make it and I was requested to bring it to a party this weekend.

  6. I can get any candy if I want to at Freak Lunchbox here. I always have Werther’s original on hand. What I love best is homemade soap. Nothing better. I never buy regular soap, except the pump stuff for handwashing. Does that count?

  9. I love the lemon drop candies that come in a tin and are dusted with cornstarch so they don’t stick together. I also love something called chicken bones which are a pink candy filled with chocolate. They are long and skinny and really look like little bones. Sadly I have only been able to find them in Newfoundland so I don’t get them often.

Congrats on seeing your name in print! I would also buy any book that you wrote. So awesome for you.

Wow. Such cool news!! You’re becoming quite the blogebrity, hey? Is that how you say it? I dunno. Pretty freakin’ awesome though.

I’m definitely going to put both those books (all three when Graham gets published) on my to-buy list. And yes, you SHOULD write a book. I have an affinity for your writing ;)

Oh my gosh! Graham’s book! I’m in the education program at my university and just finished my practicum with grade ones. My project was book making in Language Arts and I love everything they came up with. Good for him though, there’s a LOT to learn about functions of a book and he’s meeting the province’s mandated learning outcomes on his own ;)

    Also, wine gums. Yum.

You should definitely write a book, perhaps a photography / photo edit “how to” or something. Not that you don’t have a good story to tell.

I like Toblerones and Swedish fish – the Aquatic version.

I actually don’t like candy. At all. *hides* I’ve never liked it, even as a kid. I know, I’m very strange. However, I do love me some chocolate! Favourite chocolate bars are Wunderbar and Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups. Pretty much anything with peanut butter and chocolate is heaven to me!

Also – I still have several “books” that I wrote and illustrated when I was a kid and they crack me up today!

My favorite chocolate candy is 3 Musketeers – delicious chocolate with a coating of more chocolate. You can’t go wrong with that! I try to avoid non-chocolate candy (unless there are smarties or runts just lying around, then I feel obliged to eat them).
That is so cool that you are part of TWO books! I’m jealous. I had the honor of reading a final draft of a book for a friend last spring, and I’m secretly hoping that when he gets it published, my name will show up in the thank yous. Doubtful, but a girl can dream.

  31. Mmm, candy.
All I could think of when you asked this question were 2 things:
    1) When I was 7 I was at the corner store and I wanted to buy some hot lips. I took them up to the counter and was informed that I didn’t have quite enough money and had to go put one back. I went to do that, and then realized that no one was watching me. It was then that I had my first moral dilemma – do I take it anyway? Or put it back? And then I remembered that Jesus was watching, so I put it back.
    2) My mom and I went for a walk to have “the talk”, and she bought me a big bag of swedish berries from the store to eat while we walked and talked. I ate the whole thing, and then couldn’t sleep until 4 am that night. I will now forever associate swedish berries with learning about sex.

I love hearing about the adventures of your kids and family. I would feel like I had made it big time if I had my name on a book (and in a book). For all those times you maybe didn’t feel so cool when you were in school, you can show people the book and tell them to suck it!
And my favorite candy is probably starburst, but I also love anything gummy. Congrats on your accolades!

  35. There’s this sour licorice I’ve been buying at the gas station… it comes with a little plastic tray to hold all the sugar… it’s terrible how much I love this stuff. And the licorice they sell at Rogers Video… it comes in about 5 flavours but strawberry is still the best, soft-eating licorice it’s called. And Junior Mints… oh, I could go on…..
