Bookish

I mentioned a while back that a friend of mine (The blogger formerly known as Schnozz) had contacted me about reading a book (pre-release) and writing a blurb for the back cover. A few weeks ago I was contacted by the editor (Hi, May!) who asked for my address so that I could receive a copy.

Yesterday afternoon, that book arrived in the mail.

Cover

The writers who have contributed to this book are amazing. Jennifer (Schnozz) wrote a great essay (per usual), and the ever-wonderful Catherine Connors (Her Bad Mother) wrote an amazing piece about the “politics” of Mommy Blogging. I could talk about each contributor and their individual chapters, but I thought I would just mention the two women whom I have actually met (and who I think are pretty fantastic).

After reading through all of the essays, I drafted a blurb that would be plastered on the back of this book. A REAL BOOK.  Having not ever doing something like this (Obviously), I fired what I had drafted off to my friend Danny (Who is not only a stellar blogger, but is a bona fide Writer). He told me that I sounded “authorly.” Which, well, SHUCKS. Without further adieu, here is that little paragraph I wrote on the back of a REAL BOOK:

Blurb

I still can’t believe that:  1. My opinion actually matters, and 2. MY NAME IS ON THE BACK OF A BOOK.

If you want to buy a copy of “Mothering and Blogging: The Radical Act of the MommyBlog” you can get it here.

Speaking of Danny, you might have seen this already on Flickr but it bears repeating here. I am one of the lucky ones who got an advance copy of his book that is coming out on August 4th.

RAGE

The reason for the advance copy will be revealed this summer (Oooooh, I’m SO MYSTERIOUS). I mentioned on Flickr that this is the second time that I have read Rage; I actually read it this past winter in Word. There is something that I did not mention on Flickr, as I hate to sound like I am tooting my own horn. However. It is far too cool to not mention. After reading Kristabella‘s post where she talked about being mentioned in the acknowledgment section of Jen Lancaster‘s latest book, I knew that I had to share it.

Acknowledged

I am in the acknowledgment section of Danny’s book. Along with some pretty spectacular people, as you can see.

I was not expecting it at all and when he told me I honestly made the, “What the…?” face. It’s kind of awesome.

You can read all of the book news (Including tour dates!) over at his book website. It’s available for pre-order. Go buy it. You won’t regret it.

Seeing my name in print has inspired me to get off of my duff and do something about seeing my words in print. I distinctly remember one conversation with Danny where he asked me if I wanted to be published. I confirmed that yes, I did. He then asked me what I was doing to make it happen and when I replied that I was doing absolutely nothing he asked me, “And how is that working for you?” Right. Consider me both admonished and encouraged.

We picked Graham up from school on Monday and upon arriving home he told me that he was “going to write a story.” Forty-five minutes later he presented a seven-page booklet to me. There was a storyline, complete with illustrations.

The Incredible Hulk & Iron Man

After reading it and singing his praises he told me that he was going to type it into the computer and make it into a “real book.” Dude will be published before I am. Just you wait and see.

In non-book-related (but entirely-blog-related) news, I received a sweet package in the mail from Sizzle this past Friday. (We have plans to dance to Boom Boom Pow in Chicago this July, along with Kerrianne and Rhi. Brace yourselves for the photos.)

I had won a giveaway on her site a while back and the prize was a care package JUST FOR ME.

Sweet package!

I have been listening to her mixed CD non-stop. I used that bag while out shopping this weekend and filled it with one dress, four tops, a pair of black capris, and clothes for the kids. It was both fashionable AND practical.

When I won her contest I told her that I would pay it forward. This means that I will whip up a care package, Okanagan (CANADIAN) style for a lucky winner. All you need to do is leave a comment. I will pick the name using random.org (WHICH COULD BE THE STORY OF MY LIFE) sometime this weekend. Or next week.

If you need a question to answer to help you know what to say, tell me what your favorite candy is. I bought some Sour Patch Kids when we went to see Star Trek this weekend and the leftovers have been CALLING MY NAME ALL WEEK.

My favorite candy is the new 3 Musketeers Mint! Lower in fat or calories or something that helps me justify eating it.

  2. I have all sorts of rules about candy. 1. If it’s not chocolate it’s not worth eating. 2. No more than two flavors. Obviously, one of the flavors has to be chocolate. Reese Cups IN. Snickers OUT. Crunchies IN. Mars Bars OUT. I like anything with choc/pnut butter or choc/mint. (SEE Junior Mints, Peppermint Patties, Reese anything, Butterfinger)

  10. My favorite candy is actually candy corn and it’s so hard to find.

It took a lot of concentration to think of candy because you mentioned Star Trek and that reminded me of Chris Pine and goodness that boy is distracting. *fans self*

In my universe, Sour Patch Kids do not exist as “leftovers.” My candy favs include Twix, chocolate covered peanuts, and anything minty. Hoooh-yaa… :D

I am not in the least surprised that you got your name in print. Next time it’ll be on the front cover, eh? :) Unless Graham beats ya to it (entirely possible).

That bag is great!! I love practical and stylish bags for running errands. Way better than accumulating all kinds of plastic bags which cut into your fingers while carrying them.

And just for kicks, favorite candy is dark chocolate. Yum!

  25. What a great accomplishment to see your name in print!!! I also love the bag. And then candy. And 3 amazing kids, wonderful husband, and energetic dog. What amazing blessings you enjoy. I love reading your blog and thanks for all you do.
And my favorite candies are Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups, Almond Joy, Swedish Fish, and Dots (why choose one?).

  26. Some of the candies mentioned here have me all nostalgic for childhood sweets. Oh for the days when you could actually get a candy for a penny -even a tiny candy!

Anyone remember the name of those chewy candies that were roughly cube shaped with a layer of lighter chewiness on the outside, with a darker color in the middle? The light color was only around four sides so you could see the darker color. I think they were wrapped individually like gum, but weren’t gum.

    Anyone??

I’m not going to be able to sleep tonight.
