Before The Rooster Crows

Let’s start with a little background for you on the sleeping routine at our house. Miss Emily goes down for the night between 7 and 8 pm and sleeps 11 or 12 hours. The boys go to bed at 7 pretty much on the dot and generally sleep until 6:30 or 7 the next morning. In a perfect world they would sleep until 8 or 9, but that won’t happen unless I resort to drugging them. That’s not an option. Yet.

Side note: remember when we moved Nathan to a bed recently? It hasn’t resulted in any problems. He goes to bed and stays in bed. Now that I typed that, however, he’ll be sure to start some nighttime adventures.

Some days the boys pull a 6:00 wake up time. I can cope with 6:00. Some days I wake up at 6 all by myself. I spent many years waking up early for school and work, so I’m not someone who can sleep in very late. I also can’t stay up very late. I’m so lame and boring, it’s really quite sad.

Today, they boys decided that they needed to wake up at 5:30. Yes, you heard me right. 5:30. AM! They do this every once in awhile just to make sure I’m as sleep deprived as humanly possible. It’s also to (once again) prove that they don’t cope well with that wake up time either.

I heard them talking, looked at the clock next to my bed and let out a big groan. I stumbled out of bed and told them to go back to sleep. After twenty minutes of hearing them talking and banging around, I decided to haul my sorry butt out of bed again and bring them downstairs so at least Honey could sleep. I knew that Emily would likely be waking up soon, as she had gone down at 7 last night.

I don’t know if it’s all in my head or not, but if the clock says anything earlier than 6, I feel like I haven’t had more than four hours of sleep. If the clock had said 6, I would have been fine. 5:45, however, makes me want to vomit.

I fed Miss Emily when she woke up, and then crawled back into bed at 7 for a 45 minute “nap”. Is it called a nap, or just a continuation of my nighttime sleep? Regardless, it is necessary for my survival. And for my kids’ survival.

Today will be a long day. I feel better after my little “nap”, but the boys are a little, shall we say, sensitive. And maybe a little whiny. Which results in less patience on my part. Then they get whinier. And I get grumpier. I know that this is how it can go, so I try to throw some humour in to keep us all from bursting into tears. We’ll probably spend a bunch of time outside as well, because we’re ALL much happier when we get outside.

As it stands, I’ve lost track of the number of meltdowns that have occurred already this morning. Those are only the ones that I have thrown.

How many hours until bedtime?

I FULLY understand! My son wakes up between 5-5:30 EVERYday! We have tried everything and he is just an early riser. I am thinking of you today!

I know how you feel! When Tyler was between 6-10 months old, he would wake once or twice during the night for a feed, and then WAKE UP FOR THE DAY at 5 or 5.30am. Every. single. day. We were living in my parents’ garage at the time because our house was being renovated. I was on maternity leave, and thank goodness I had my Mum around during the day to help out. I was SO sleep deprived I almost went nuts.
You know what? Tyler started sleeping through the night (and waking up at 6.30-7.30am) after we moved back home. I think God knew that I wouldn’t be able to handle it once I didn’t have my Mum there to get me through each day ;-)

Avelyn woke up howling at 3 am. Ugh. Sleep is just such a precious gift that we take for granted until the little ones come along, hey? Hope the boys chill out after some fresh air. :)

I have that happen here alot too. Especially when the sun rises just after 5am.Hello Mummy the sun is up!! Aaahhh Luckily for me the girls read and play so I can wake up slowly!
The meltdown days are the worst, I hope you make it thru without too many more meltdowns…
Thinking of you!!!!

Sleep at the Rogall house: Kids sleep until between 6am-7am. Baby still gets up a minimum of once a night, usually twice (my older girls were sleeping at least 12 hours at night from 6 weeks on). Lauren is on solid food, too. Schedule is everything and since she can’t have one (with all the running around that must be done daily)…I cn’t have sleep. But a 5:30 am wake up call. OUCH!

You asked how many hours until bedtime? well, it’s currently 10:30 pm… and I’m sending hopes that your countdown ended at least an hour and a half ago. Sleep well!

I yell out everytime i run into some similar extenuating circumstances…though I don’t have children, yet, I totaly understand you…5:45 it is certainly a time to sleep and if somebody awakes you up is like a penalty kick in your head!

I need my sleep as well. It is hard to get up that early. Glad for you that EMily sleeps that good already. Yeah for you guys. We will see you soon. How much snow is there at your place? We are curious about our property.

Jack used to wake up EVERYDAY at 5:30 am. He finally decided I wasn’t a very nice person at that hour and now sleeps to a more reasonable 7:30 or 8.

Have you tried keeping them up till 8? Maybe then you would get a 7:30 or 8 wake up too :-)

Hi Ang! Yep all of this sounds familiar. Sean was a 4 a.m. kid. Sadly that lasted until he went to school! Of course then he wanted to start to sleep in!! I know you have heard this many times, it may be difficult but treasure each minute of it girl, you go from not even going to the bathroom that one kid at least is attached to your leg…to them being 19 and you hardly see them! Some mornings as your poor butt is being pulled out of bed..again..remember sweetie you are doing the most important job in the world and it is also the best job. love and prayers Auntie Jill

If I got 3 hours in a row I would be happy. My boy isn’t that into sleep. Especially lately…teething, so NOT fun!
It’s what you get use to, I understand.

Yikes! I would be a very, very unhappy mummy if my kids were up that early. I hope you get more sleep in the coming days.
