(Dot Com)

A few months ago I announced my photography site with great fanfare.

The site was then never updated and went to pot.

(“Went to pot.”  Another one of those “What does that actually mean?” phrases.)

There are a myriad of reasons for my failure.  I am busy (DUH), but part of the problem is my lack of coding skills. I can muddle through accounting, writing, and photography.  Try to get me to code a website and my eyes glaze over and I damage my keyboard with all of the head banging I do.

I tried, though.  I truly did.  I spent hours (HOURS!) searching for WordPress plug-ins that would do what I wanted.  I found some that looked as though they were what I was looking for.  Getting them to work, however, was a completely different story.

I looked at alternative hosting options.  There were hosting sites out there that made the whole “gallery thing” easy and pretty, but they cost more than I could justify.  I had also heard about poor customer service issues. Boo.

I gave up.

My friend Lisa over at Beyond Megapixels (GREAT photography resource!) emailed me last week to tell me about a photography hosting site that was both easy to use and an affordable.  They also gave great customer service. The hosting company is portfoliositez.com, for those who are interested.

I still had to wrangle with the blog-template side of things, which was a tiny headache, but it really is fine with me.  The blog is optional.  The portfolio/gallery side is as easy as pie.

(Is pie really easy?  It is one baking treat that I have never tried to create.  There are so many sayings that I have no clue about.)

A few disclaimers before I send you over to look around:

  • Yes, it is a Flash site. Yes, I thought I hated flash.  However. The cool kids seem to be using Flash and I really want to be considered a cool kid. Blame my childhood.
  • I shot three weddings this summer, but only two of them are highlighted.  The third couple did not want their photos on the Internet.  I honored that.
  • I have a few “family” photo shoots to include.  A few have happened already and one is happening this weekend. I’ll get on that, now that it is so easy.
  • The blog side needs work on the layout.  I have had a bunch of emails from the people who regularly check the site telling me that they like what they see.  I thought I should post about the quasi-overhaul to clue the rest of you folks in.
  • I also had nothing else to post today.
  • The blog layout should be fixed by October. 2015.  That’s how I roll.

I would love if you could go take a look around and let me know what you think.  Unless you want to rain on my parade.  Then you are welcome to kiss my hiney.  Not my Honey.  If you were to try to kiss my Honey you would make me angry.  You won’t like me when I am angry.

On the blog side, I post about Hillary‘s wedding and Amanda‘s baby belly.  Yes, this one.

Here’s hoping that (Overdue!) baby makes her entrance soon.

I really hope you all check the site out and report back.  I am also hoping you have a stellar weekend.

Peace out.

I didn’t see anything about weddings on the photography side, but the kid pics were centered properly. How to create galleries?

The wedding galleries are there! Only four of them show – you just need to click the circle on the right to arrow over :)

How timely, Angella, since I just paid a buttload for my site. Do you think you could add a link to your blog in the gallery portion of your site and a link to your portfolio in the blog?

I think it looks really solid. I do have one concern though.

You’re at the landing page and decide either {enter site} or {enter blog} but once you’ve decided you cannot easily jump from one to the other.

I would look into adding a tab on both sides that will allow viewers and readers to jump from the flash site to the blog and vice versa.

    Just a thought.

It looks great. The wedding shots are quite lovely and really capture the humor.
I agree with those above about adding a way to jump from blog to site more easily.

I’ve never heard the phrase “went to pot” – is it a Canadian thing?

Pie is not easy for me to make if I create the crust and filling from scratch. Ugh, bubbling over, burning, not cool!

I think you’re like really talented and view you as a sort of role model :)

  15. Jill - GlossyVeneer September 5, 2008 8:16 am edit

I helped a photographer friend set-up a site with SmugMug.com and it’s pretty cool. But the real strength with that comes from if you want to sell prints. Since he does a lot of traveling and takes photos of dramatic landscapes/buildings, this type of site really suited him. I doubt people would want you to sell their wedding photos, but that would be funny if they did.

I wish you lived here, you could take a photo of me for my employee directory. They’re taking photos of employees right now and since I telecommute, I’m left out. So they will continue to use my photo from 7 years ago that is AWFUL. (And I’m sure a new photo would be awful too, since they’re terrible photographers.)

It might just be my computer, but the contact or whatever that’s called is REALLY hard to read. Black on dark background. BUT, Noah’s got the good laptop and I’m on the old one hooked up to a 3000 lb screen because the laptop screen is busted, so don’t take this comment as fact. Other than that … I LOVE it! Beautiful! If you lived closer, I’d get you to photograph us. We’re in desperate need of some great family shots!

The gallery is awesome. The blog really was slow loading for me. I would probably put one photo in the blog about the various shoots you do and link to the gallery for the rest.

I need to get an online gallery going, thanks for the recommendation.

I Absolutely LOVE IT. The Photo Blog is fantastic and something I’ve never seen before. I only have 2 things to add:

-I think you should put a photo of you on the site–maybe in the contact area? I love the one you use as your thumbnail…or, maybe you don’t use that one anymore? I think it will add a personal touch. Or, maybe it can be a flash image of you falling down on the beach–just an idea :) heehee

-When I click on the contact tab, it comes up, but it stays greyed out. I had a hard time reading it.

Other than those 2 tiny little things, it is spectacular!

P.S. LOVE the photos of Hills and Shawn. Especially the goofball ones!

Hi there! Coming by way of Hillary’s blog to give you my 2 cents on your new photography website. First, your photography skills. Excellent! Love the baby’s mama’s photos. Loved what you captured from Hillary and Shawn’s wedding.

My only complaint? The website takes too long to load your pictures. It all but froze my machine (not old either) while the photos loaded. And, as a bride who not too long ago went looking for her own wedding photographer? I was impatient (Hello! Only so much time to look for vendors!). And if I were heading to your website to see about your skills for my wedding? Well, I know me well enough to know I likely would’ve quit before they all loaded because it just took too long. Not sure if there’s a way to speed up that process. Or to limit how many photos are on each page (and have links to all the different pages). Or whatnot. But, I thought I’d leave a hopefully helpful comment as you get this business up and running. Because the product? Looks like it’s worth a lot more than a slowly loading website. =)
