47 Days Until Christmas

Say it with me in unison:

“47 Days ?!?! Holy crap!”

(On a side note, phrases like that get me thinking. What constitutes “holy” crap…or the “s” word, if you will? And why is that term used when you are in a quandary?)

It’s actually a good thing that Christmas is coming. Apart from baby Jesus, there is much that I love about the season.

I love all of the Christmas music. It is joyous, peaceful, and sometimes even funny. You hear it on the radio, in the mall, and even at home. I’d probably play it most of the year if Honey would let me.

There are pretty lights everywhere. People smile more at each other. The snow makes everything look so pristine and beautiful. You get together more with those that you love.

It does get a little more busy than normal, but there is an upside to that. Come January, everything goes dead quiet. Remember how boring January can (will) be when and if you start to feel a little harried in December.

Our little town has a Festival of Lights at the end of November. Main street is shut down and filled to the brim with people. The stores stay open late, and vendors set up on the street to sell yummy treats (mmmm…Mini Donuts). At 7 pm, all of the Christmas lights in the downtown core are turned on. There are choirs singing, and people laughing. You can’t beat it.

There is even more that I love about the Christmas season. I get so. very. Excited! When I find that PERFECT gift. I love giving those kinds of gifts far more than I enjoy receiving them. Don’t get me wrong; I like a present as much as the next gal, but I love giving them a hundred times more.

When I give that sweet gift to someone, I can barely contain my excitement. I sit there trying not to vibrate (ala Graham) and take pure delight in the joy found on the receiver’s face. Oh, man. I CAN’T WAIT!

Another favourite part of the Christmas season; the Christmas BAKING! I love the cookie dough/cake batter as much as (or more than) the end product, so I am doubly blessed. I get to lick the spoon AND nibble on the final results. To name a few: Whipped shortbread, fudge, Nanaimo bars, SHORTBREAD CARAMEL SQUARES! Those ones are so amazing that we now make them all year long. I had some just the other day. And the next day. And the next.

I’ve already got that bubbly, happy, Christmas-is-coming feeling and it feels fantastic. If only I could bottle it, I would give it to everyone. It’s a great counter-balance to sleep deprivation.

I’m with you all the way. I love everything about Christmas….for me the joyous season kicks in right after Hallowe’en. I bust out the christmas tunes (my kids roll their eyes every year, but secretly I think they wait for them!)I love hunting down the perfect gift for someone, wrapping it specially is just as fun – yep there’s nothing I don’t like about the whole season. Now I have even more fun ‘cuz I get to buy for my beautiful granddaughter, Avelyn!
